The Elvis I Knew

The 5 Prince Publishing company released a new book entitled "The Elvis I Knew: Beyond The Headlines And Scandal To The Heart Of The Superstar" written by Robert C. Cantwell.

Excerpt:
My wife, children and grandchildren encouraged me to write down the memories of my time with Elvis from 1970-1977 while serving in the Denver Police Department. My date books, notes, photographs, saved newspaper articles, and stories retold to me by my former colleagues and friends, support these memories.

Elvis had everything that any poor boy growing up could only dream of having: a glamorous life and money. My own deprived childhood gave me a better basis than most for understanding and forming a true friendship with Elvis.

Since his death in 1977, there have been many books, magazines and newspaper articles written about the Elvis I didn’t know.

The Elvis I knew was more than the world’s superstar; he was a true country gentleman. He cherished those that treated him as a normal person rather than a meal ticket. Some who called Elvis “friend,” were only his pals when they were on the payroll. Elvis once told me, “If I was ‘down and out’ they would drop me in a minute. I know you guys would still be here.” He was right.

Elvis’ life and tragic ending has been extensively covered in all forms of media. I wanted to share my memories of the man few people had the good fortune to witness firsthand. He was more than an amazing singer and entertainer. He was a generous, caring man who craved true friendship and loyalty.

Elvis has “left the building,” but he never has left my heart
