Cissy Houston gets Lifetime Achievement Award

Grammy-winning gospel great Cissy Houston, mother of late Whitney Houston will be honored at a gospel-music awards show in Charlotte, N.C., this weekend.

The first Gospel Image Awards will bestow its first Lifetime Achievement Award on Houston, who turns 82 next week, for her contributions to the musical genre that combines praising God with sophisticated entertainment values.

Houston was in the well-known vocal group, the Sweet Inspirations, who performed alongside artists like Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley.
The original Sweet Inspirations featured Cissy Houston, Myrna Smith, Sylvia Shemwell and Estelle Brown. Elvis' infamous "Laughing" 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' was from the Vegas August 26 1969 midnight performance and it was Cissy Houston who kept on singing the soaring, perfect "soprano obbligato" as Elvis fell apart with unstoppable laughter. Houston left the Sweet Inspirations in late 1969.
