January 30 - The National Red Tribute

The American gossip magazine National Enquirer has put together an 86 page 'tribute' magazine about Elvis, for February 2013. The Enquirer seems to be focused on Colonel Parker's role in the Elvis Organisation and describes that with very unfriendly words. And of course, the 'casket picture' is featured too.

Welcome To Paradise City

The Touchdown Records import release "Welcome To Paradise City" was released. It contains an audience-recording of the February 18, 1977 as recorded at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia/South Carolina.

A Red Christmas

In 1957, an engineer at the RCA plant in New Jersey where "Elvis' Christmas Album" was being pressed made himself a very special souvenir. He used the red vinyl normally reserved for classical albums to press a copy of the new Elvis Presley record. Four decades later, the red record made its way from that retiring engineer to a dealer, who auctioned it to the present owner for a record sum.

That album has been put on sale on eBay by the owner, the Rev. Steven Banas, a Southern Baptist minister and a longtime collector from Reeds Spring, Mo., with a buy-it-now price of $29,999.99. The sale is scheduled to end at 3:30 p.m. EST Thursday.

January 29 - The Best Of The UK Summer

The Follow That Dream Collector's label announced two new releases, in cooperation with the Norwegian Flaming Star. The titles are "The Best of British – The HMV Years 1956-1958" and "Elvis Presley - Summer Of '61".

The first is "The Best of the British - The HMV Years 1956-1958", written by Trevor Simpson. This is the story of EVERY song by Elvis released on the British HMV label. It is an eclectic mix of graphic illustrations of the labels, the charts and rare memorabilia through 1956 - 1958.

Thorough research of each song and songwriter has taken many years and provides the definitive history of the music that shook the world, sensationally revealing many previously unknown facts and British connections to Elvis and his music. The book contains over 1000 rare and unpublished photographs, the illustrations connected to the songs, the recordings and the promotion of Elvis by HMV in Britain. Included, and officially gathered together for the first time on two exclusive CDs, is every Elvis track released by HMV. Added to these are bonus songwriter demos and Elvis outtakes to complete the audio story upon which the foundation of the global popular music culture and industry was built. This is Elvis and the story of the impact of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Great Britain.

The second book is "Summer Of '61". Following the success of "Welcome Home Elvis" and "From Memphis To Hollywood", Flaming Star productions will release "Summer Of '61"in April of this year. The focus is on the summer months of 1961, with the main focus on the making of the movie "Follow That Dream" filmed on location in Florida in the months July and August 1961. The book presents original newspaper articles, new exclusive interviews from the cast, the crew, and local residents, and also details about scenes deleted from the final print. The book includes over 200 stunning unpublished photos taken from the original negatives plus a CD. And for the first time ever, FTD will bring out video footage with one of their releases. The complete track list has still to come, but we can give away these teasers of the CD/DVD from the back-cover of the book:
- Thee 'Follow That Dream' soundtrack recordings
- Unreleased outtakes from the Nashville recording sessions that formed the LP 'Pot Luck'
- Songwriters demo recording of 'It's A Wonderful Life'
- Unseen 35mm test screen footage of Elvis shot on location in Florida

January 26 - Return Of The Photos

LIFE magazine has just published over 50 rare and unpublished Elvis army photos. Taken by photographers James Whitmore and Al Fenn they capture a moment in Elvis' life when he was poised to remind everyone who might have doubted it that, despite two years of taking orders, he was ready to again be the King.

From LIFE magazine:
... Back in 1958 the biggest musical star on the planet was drafted into the United States Army. Sure, Elvis Aaron Presley often affected a sneer that would drive most drill sergeants to near-apoplexy, and his pompadour was hardly the sort of hairstyle one associated with America's fighting men. But Elvis was a good ol' boy, born in Mississippi and raised in Tennessee, and maybe his humble Southern roots allowed for a more seamless transition from pop-culture icon to buck private.
Whatever the reason Elvis looked like he belonged in a uniform - and by all accounts, his brothers in arms saw what he was made of, and accepted him as one of them. It was impossible, of course, for anyone to pretend that Elvis was just another soldier; but he worked hard to fit in and to do what was asked of him, and after two years, when Sgt. Presley was honorably discharged, it was evident that the boy from Tupelo had grown up.
It was also evident, though, that Elvis was hardly heartbroken about leaving the military. His two years serving in Germany had shown the world, and had shown Elvis himself, that he could handle something more than a guitar, and could perform tasks that didn't involve gyrating in front of screaming bobbysoxers. In 1960, it was time to get back to doing what he did best: it was time to leave Sgt. Presley behind, and to be Elvis again.
The series of photos - most of which never appeared in LIFE - showing Elvis, along with his 15-year-old girlfriend, Priscilla Beaulieu, in Germany on the day he left for the States (March 2, 1960), and Elvis again at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he landed on March 3, sans Priscilla. He was officially discharged from the Army on March 5.

After his two year hitch, rock and roll idol Elvis Presley wore a sergeant's chevrons but no sideburns.Elvis said, "If I say the Army made a man of me, it would give the impression I was an idiot before I was drafted. I wasn't exactly that."

Elvis was, in fact, a smart soldier. His agents back home had been pretty smart, too, selling 20 million RCA Victor records to the jukebox set. These earned ELVIS $1.3 million in addition to his $145.24 a month service pay. Elvis paid the U.D. 91% of the total in taxes, or enough to support about 150 of his fellow soldiers for a year. Behind him at Ray Barracks near Friedberg, Elvis had left hordes of palpitating Fräuleins and the pretty 16-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu,
daughter of an Air Force captain stationed at Wiesbaden. Elvis kissed her before he flew to the aid of the girls back home, sorrowful at parting but anxious to get into his bright-colored pants and back to his hip-swinging singing.

From EPE:
Elvis fans from about the world gathered in Hawaii for a unique opportunity to follow in the king’s footsteps and spend time exploring Elvis’ Hawaii. Photos and video are now available from the 40th Anniversary Celebration of "Aloha from Hawaii."

In honor of the king's groundbreaking performances in 1973, Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie declared January 14, 2013, as "Elvis, Aloha from Hawai'i via Satellite Day."
Fans also enjoyed panel discussions and special performances from guests such as famous Hawaiian DJ Tom Moffatt, former members of J. D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet, Elvis' personal hairstylist Larry Gellar and Elvis’ musical conductor and a key member of the “Aloha from Hawaii” musical production team, Joe Guercio.

January 24 - NY Opening Night Duets

The Eternal Flames Production import label released the DV "Duets" containing a colorful collection of Elvis duets. The DVD is region-free.

From the press-release:
During his movie career, Elvis recorded a vast amount of songs together with other vocalists. The result is a wide variety of songs and video clips out of the many well known Elvis movies. An entertaining collection that is nice to watch. Rare are the images of the 1960 'Welcome Home Elvis' Frank Sinatra TV-Special; they remain a unique momentum to see. Other rare performances include Lisa Marie's duet with Elvis on 'In The Ghetto' during a Oprah TV-show, complete with Gospel Choir.

It is beyond anyone's guess why this never turned in to a big hit; great performance. Also: Celine Dion's duet with Elvis on 'Amercian Idol' and Martina McBride appearing - with Elvis on screen - on a tv-show to promote the 'Christmas Duets' album. The odd one out is a clip from 'Beyonce & Jay-Z'.

MSG Opening Night

On YouTube a previously unknown audience audiorecording of Elvis Presley's 1972 Opening Night at Madison Square Garden was posted. 40 years after this Elvis-Event took place, we now have for the first time, Elvis Presley's June 9th 1972 opening show at Madison Square Garden, NY.

You can listen to the show >> here.

And the wire leads to ...

The youtube poster who unknowingly posted the recording of a rare live recording of "I Forgot To Remember To Forget" from the Louisiana, Hayride in 1955, as recorded ona wire-recorder, confirmed he has sold the recording to Ernst Jorgensen for the Elvis archives at Sony for an undisclosed sum.

The original owner, only known as 'amberola1b' on youtube did express his regret at not making the recording public much sooner had he known anything about the now released SUN years epic, 'A Boy From Tupelo', of which Ernst sent him a copy of as a bonus.

On January 12, amberola1b posted the following comments on YouTube about his interaction with Jorgensen:
I did sell the rights to him but the way it went was that I didn’t even know Ernst and was directed to him thru other utubers that were Elvis fans. I didn’t even know there was a big anniversary album or book being put together about The King, I just merely decided at that moment in time to do the utube video, and just happen to post it during the summer. If luck had been on my side and I had known about what was being planned [...] I would have made the video months before, and it would have been included in the album that was included in the book ‘A Boy From Tupelo’. But as it turned out he sent me a copy of the book and it just blew my mind to see all the wonderful pictures that had been compiled of Elvis and the stories written about him.

January 22 - Sick Doctor Maffia

ElvisMatters mentioned that Red West is in critical condition in a Memphis hospital. Red had been admitted to hospital for stomach surgery recently and doctors found something wrong with his heart which caused concern. The good news is that he is feeling a little better according to Essential Elvis. Apparently Sonny West is not doing too well either. More information when available.

Dr. Nick is also in the hospital right now. He can no longer walk after three botched attempts at surgery on his hip. He's okay in himself, but not being able to get around is bothering him somewhat. Essential Elvis just called him in an attempt to cheer him up and during their conversation he told him that Red West was also in hospital. Dr. Nick asked what was wrong with him and Andrew Hearn said that there seems to be a problem with his heart. As quick as a flash Dr. Nick replied, "I didn't know Red had a heart!"

January 19 - A Country Hero In Vegas

The VV importlabel announced the release of the CD "Country Hero in Vegas". The set, containing the unreleased Las Vegas performances on January 30th 1971, dinner show, is due February 2013.

From the press-release:
To be released shortly (early February) on the VV label will be their second release entitled "Country Hero in Vegas!" featuring the unreleased Las Vegas performances on January 30th 1971, dinner show. After the success of the first release We decided: first to improve the product and second, keeping the same formula to give you more ...

Here We present Elvis to the begin of the season .. no surprises in the tracklist with the exception of his latest single There Goes My Everything, but the show is extremely solid and good, the sound is good and powerful using a straight copy of the original source tape, We were able to keep Elvis' vocal power central to the mix whilst at the same time giving a new definition to the supporting musicians and singers.

Elvis' performance on these early season nights is superb as he is still performing to the best of his ability. Although he delivers short shows they are delivered in a very intense, crisp and fresh manner that cannot be denied. Elvis was on stage to have fun and demonstrated this during the older, classic numbers, but songs such as 'Polk Salad Annie', 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'Sweet Caroline' never sounded better. The season will be remembered for the introduction of the new opening composition 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' which although written by Richard Strauss in 1894 was more closely associated with the Stanley Kubrick film '2001 A Space Odyssey', a recent cinema release. As we now know this thunderous opening would be used until the final concert Elvis performed. The season will also be remembered for the beautiful new closing number ‘The Impossible Dream’ which Elvis sang with power and feeling giving us proof that Elvis continued to grow as a performer.

The LP 140 vinyl gram is a limited hand numbered edition of 500 copies. It comes with an three fold 300 gram high quality glossy sleeve both sides printed, giving an unique view. The sleeve will be accompanied by relevant liner notes and with many photographs of the Elvis now suit from the season.

This vinyl will include a bonus CD and 7” vinyl EP. In the bonus CD you have the possibility to listen the complete concert + a selection of 16 songs (32 min.)soundboard recording, coming for the previous four days shows. From the opening night January 26 you can have the possibility to listen the evolution of Elvis’ performing during the begin of the season, we practically included all the songs no performed in the January 30 DS . In January RCA released what is without doubt the best Elvis album of the 1970’s, Elvis Country. In this season of Elvis performed three songs from the album. From here the EP idea in the matter to give the possibility to use the three songs performed to create a special Elvis Country EP. The EP comes with four songs and two fold sleeve both printed. Running time 48 minutes

January 15 - The Complete On Tour Outtakes DVD

The Complete On Tour Outtakes import DVD is a fantastic new release filled to the brim with outtake material from Elvis On Tour according to the press-release from the Eternal Flame Productions import label.

From the press-release:
There have already been a couple of releases with this raw footage that – fortunately for us – somehow escaped from the vaults at MGM. The producers of this DVD show there is a treasure trove of material that would make a spectacular official remake of this in 1972, Golden Globe winning documentary.

Because MGM/Warner/Turner will not produce such a remake in the near future, the producers of this DVD have made a nice start, beginning with a good looking and effective working Main Menu. You can choose the chapters of your liking. The producers have made this DVD in chronological order. Starting with the studio rehearsals, on to the rehearsal on the road, and then on to the live concerts.

Also on this DVD is the Madison Square Garden press conference (great footage and very sharp, close-ups of Elvis) and the press conference in Hawaii (November 1972) to announce Aloha From Hawaii (in very good quality!).

You will get to view an enormous amount of material carefully researched from the best sources available. The rehearsals are fantastic to see and they give us an intriguing look behind the scenes. Just how good are those images and what a pity not much of it was used in the original movie. You’ll enjoy many new camera angles, with both the rehearsals and the live material. The material of Elvis in the dark blue ‘owl’ jumpsuit (April 14th 1972) are great!

You’ll get to see all kinds of material along the way, including complete footage of the TCB Band in a plane on their way to the next gig. Touching images of The Sweet Inspirations sleeping in their chairs (touching knowing it is only recently that we have lost Sylvia and Myrna). All of this creates a wonderful portrait of what life was like in 1972 and that of Elvis on tour.

The interview of Elvis with the producers of the film, shot in black and white, is one of the most stunning pieces of film captured for this project and should urgently be released officially. This DVD release is pure joy and a must-have release for every fan!

The DVD is region free (PAL format), with a running time 164 minutes.

January 11 - John Wilkinson Passed Away

John Wilkinson, Elvis Presley's former rhythm guitarist,  has passed away in his home aged 67, on Friday, January 11, 2013, surrounded by family and friends. He fought a long battle with cancer.

John Wilkinson played rhythm guitar for Elvis on stage at 1200 concerts from 1969 through 1977, his signature song was "Early Morning Rain".

Elvis Presley used to say on stage "The young man on Rhythm Guitar, he makes records for RCA Victor,  his name is John Wilkinson. Also one of my closest friends" (Las Vegas, August 21st 1970).

Reactions to John Wilkinson’s death keep coming in. Fans from all over the world are shocked and saddened over this heart breaking news.

Larry Geller: “Like everyone else in the Elvis world, I was deeply saddened to learn of John Wilkenson's passing. He contributed greatly to Elvis' life. A master musician, a warrier and a true friend to everyone who knew him. Elvis needed you, man, so you had to go.”

Kathy Westmoreland: “Johnny, You were the very first person in my "new family" that came up to me the first night and offered to assist me in any way. And you were there when I had questions. You made sure I met your friends, ("good people" as you put it) fans, and ensured I felt at home. It was just good to know I had someone to call on then. You were a 'legend' in our industry long before I met you that night. I remember you being mentioned and interviewed often with "Charlie Tuna" on the radio, playing acoustic guitar and singing beautifully with the Kingston Trio, the New Christy Minstrels. So talented, so professional, and most of all...a down-to-earth,good human being ...and friend. I am so thankful for being blessed with the gift of knowing you.”

Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley: “We offered our deepest sympathy to his family. John and the beautiful music he made with Elvis will live forever in our hearts."

Family friend and spokesman Gary Ellison: "John considered Elvis more as a friend than as a boss. He was honestly one of the best acoustic guitar players I'd ever heard. He was proud of the fact that he never turned down a request for an autograph. It didn't matter if he was meeting adoring fans, joking with Chuck Berry about keeping his B-string in tune, or if he was talking to a neighbor about her dog, people were people to him. Folks were folks. John would look you square in the eye and accept you, just as you were. There was nothing phony about him."

Ed Bonja called John "the ultimate professional": "John was never late, showed up on time, did exactly what Elvis wanted to hear, he was a friend for live, his death leaves many of us heartbroken".

Biography:
At the age of 10, he famously snuck into Elvis Presley's dressing room before a show at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, telling Elvis, 'you can't play guitar worth a damn'. Elvis was amused and impressed with this kid and predicted they would meet again. They did. John was born on July 3, 1945 to parents Dr. Richard and Virginia Wilkinson. He grew up in Springfield, Missouri, where he attended Greenwood Laboratory School. John was drawn to music very early.

After playing in a high school band with his classmates called, 'The Coachmen', John went on to make a name for himself as a folk and country singer and guitar player. He traveled around the country playing with such groups as 'The Kingston Trio', 'The Goodtime Singers', 'Greenwood County Singers', and 'The New Christy Minstrels'.

John and Elvis met again in 1968, when the King of Rock 'n' Roll invited John to join his band. John played over 1,200 shows as Elvis' rhythm guitar player, right up until Elvis' death in 1977. After that he played less music, and made a living in retail and airline services management. He married his wife, Terry, in 1983. Unfortunately a serious stroke in 1989 left him unable to play the guitar.

John Wilkinson appeared with Elvis in the concert documentaries That's The Way It Is (1970) and Elvis On Tour (1972). He also appeared in the Aloha From Hawaii television event - which celebrates its 40th anniversary on Monday. However, Wilkinson is most prominently featured in the television special Elvis In Concert (1977) while playing the guitar solo on 'Early Morning Rain'. In addition to his live work with Elvis, Wilkinson played for him in 1972 and 1975 sessions at RCA’s Hollywood Studio as well as in 1976 sessions at Graceland.

Nevertheless, for several years after that, he traveled the U.S. and Europe, appearing with the old TCB band and others, singing and paying tribute to Elvis. He was proud of the fact that he never turned down a request for an autograph. Despite his amazing musicianship, the incredible places he got to visit, and his entertaining stories of meeting famous people, the most remarkable thing about John was not his extraordinary experiences, it was his kindness. It didn't matter if he was meeting adoring fans, joking with Chuck Berry about keeping his B-string in tune, or if he was talking to a neighbor about her dog, people were people to him.

Folks were folks. John would look you square in the eye and accept you, just as you were. There was nothing phony about him. He will be deeply missed. John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Terry. The family would like to thank Mercy Hospital, Elfindale Manor, Barnes Hospital, and all the nurses and doctors who have been such great help the last four years.

Cremation and a private graveside service will be conducted by Gorman-Scharpf. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the charity of donor's choice.

Elvis artist Joe Petruccio honored John with this picture.

January 09 - Bustin' Elvis

Due for release on the Performance label on February 23, 2013 is the 50-track budgetcompilation "Bustin' Elvis".

Frank Page Died

Frank Page, veteran regional broadcaster and a legend in the music world through his work at the Louisiana Hayride, died late Wednesday after a bout with a severe respiratory infection.

Page, 87, had been in the intensive care unit at WK Pierremont Health Center. Until the last few hours of his life he received visits from family, friends and caretakers. Survivors include his widow, Helen, and a brother. Funeral details are pending.

Page, long considered the dean of Shreveport broadcasters, retired from KWKH Radio in 2005 after 65 years behind microphones. It was during the 1950s when Page cemented his place in history by introducing Elvis Presley for the first time to a paying audience in 1954 at the Louisiana Hayride. "Unbeknownst to me, it was what some since have called 'a seminal moment in the history of the world,'" Page told The Times several years ago in an interview. "He was a shy, well-mannered young man and just impressed the hell out of everybody."

Joey Kent, a local music and film producer and son of the late David Kent, a former owner of the Louisiana Hayride, worked with Page on projects concerning the radio show and noted that Page, an unusually modest man in broadcasting, downplayed his role in Elvis's early years.

"As Frank (would have been) the first to tell you, he fell into his most famous role, as the man who introduced Elvis to worldwide radio audiences quite by accident," Kent said. "Horace Logan generally introduced the well-known acts. It was through the fact that Elvis was an unknown that the job was pitched to Frank. Without much fanfare, he simply introduced Elvis by reporting what they knew, that he had a record out that had been getting some play on KWKH and other area radio stations and it had been getting a good response."

Page and the early Hayride provided an uncritical and forgiving environment that allowed Presley to mature as an artist and take his talent to a national level, Kent said.

Volume 27

The German "Elvis Sammlung"  continued their series with the release of volume 27 in the series. This volume contains the DVD "Loving You", memorabilia reproductions, a magazine and a mini-poster for the "Frankie And Johnny" movie.

January 07 - Obituary From Aloha

Sony Legacy formally announced the release of a deluxe 2-CD package in theis Legacy series to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the "Aloha From Hawaii" special.

From the press-release:
The 40th anniversary of the historic one-hour satellite broadcast of Elvis Presley from the Honolulu International Center Arena in January of 1973 is now commemorated with the release of "Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite: Legacy Edition." This deluxe 2-CD package will be available everywhere March 19, 2013, through RCA/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.

"Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite: Legacy Edition" marks the first time that both shows performed by Elvis, released separately in 1973 (the original double-LP Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite) and 1988 (the CD The Alternate Aloha), have been coupled together in to one package. At the same time, the show that "The Alternate Aloha" was based on has been completely remixed from the original multi-track tapes.

Accompanying the 2-CD set will be a booklet with rare photos and a new liner notes essay written by BBC presenter, producer and musician Stuart Colman. This new Legacy Edition was produced by Rob Santos and Ernst Mikael Jørgensen, who along with Roger Semon, are the respected directors of RCA’s Elvis catalog for over two decades.

Elvis' love for Hawaii began in March of 1961, when he raised $62,000 for the funding of the USS Arizona Memorial. In January of 1973, “Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite” was the first time that a full-length concert was broadcast around the world. It was the most expensive entertainment special at this time, costing $2.5 million, and was viewed by over 1.5 billion people. Over 6,000 fans were in attendance for both shows at the Neal Blaisdell Arena. In early 1973, Elvis Presley was performing at one of the highest peaks of his career, and "Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite: Legacy Edition" is proof of this milestone.

The original broadcast of “Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite” was a second show, that started at 12:30 a.m. in Hawaii on Sunday morning, January 14, 1973. Clearly at the top of his game, Elvis delivered a 24-song show that pulled songs from every phase of his career. It was a painstaking process to develop material that did not duplicate very much of his "Live At Madison Square Garden" concerts of June 1972 (as heard on RCA/Legacy’s most recent "Prince From Another Planet" commemorative 2-CD+DVD package, released November 2012). Nor did Elvis want to duplicate very much of his then-current MGM theatrical release, "Elvis On Tour," filmed in March and April of 1972, the Golden Globe award-winning film which turned out to be the final motion picture of his lifetime.

Following the 12:30 show, at about 3:00 a.m., the ensemble regrouped to record five additional songs exclusively for the U.S. broadcast, four of which originated on Elvis’ old "Blue Hawaii" movie soundtrack of 1961: “Blue Hawaii,” “Ku-U-I-Po,” “No More,” and “Hawaiian Wedding Song.”  The fifth was Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain,” emblematic of the contemporary folk-rock singer-songwriter boom to which Elvis was surprisingly well attuned in the ’70s.

“Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite” was broadcast to more than 40 nations, and broke viewing records in Japan, the Philippines, Korea, Hong Kong and Australia. "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite," the double-LP containing all 24 songs from the broadcast, was rush released to arrive in stores the first week of February in 1973. It debuted in the February 24 Billboard 200 albums chart, and sold a half-million units in its first four weeks. The single from the concert, Elvis’ version of James Taylor’s “Steamroller Blues,” debuted in April and reached the Top 20, selling in excess of 400,000 copies, and ranking #10 in Cashbox and #17 in Billboard.

In the United States, the broadcast was in fact postponed so the performance would not conflict with MGM’s "Elvis On Tour."  When “Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite” was finally aired in the U.S. on April 4th, the Nielsen ratings had the show in 33.8% of homes and reaching 51% of those watching television. The double-LP immediately vaulted up the charts, taking the #1 spot in Billboard’s May issue. It stayed on the chart for 52 weeks, and was certified 5X Platinum by the RIAA. The album was Elvis’ first #1 since the "Roustabout" movie soundtrack from January 1965.

It was not generally known at the time that the Friday evening (January 12th) dress rehearsal had also been recorded, as a safety backup.  Fifteen years later in June 1988 (more than a decade after Elvis’ death), the show was finally issued on CD as "The Alternate Aloha." However, to make room for three of the four Blue Hawaii songs (from the 3 a.m. session) at the end of the CD, it was necessary to omit “Johnny B. Goode,” “I Can't Stop Loving You” and the “Long Tall Sally/ Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On” medley.  "Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite: Legacy Edition" now restores those tracks in the sequence where they were originally performed, and adds the four "Blue Hawaii" songs plus “Early Morning Rain” as five bonus tracks.

As Ernst Mikael Jørgensen writes in his essential research guide, Elvis Presley: A Life In Music (St. Martin’s Press, 1998), “The immense pressure of being beamed live to one billion people didn’t seem to phase Elvis a great deal; showing little evidence of nerves, he was highly focused, and he executed a flawless set that sparkled with all the flash of his image.  The unparalleled media attention and size of the audience, not to mention the worldwide number one album that followed, were perhaps the most effective statement ever engineered of one artist’s worldwide power.”

Gloria Pall Died

Gloria Pall, whose long sexy legs were seen framing Elvis' face in the 1957 MGM film, 'Jailhouse Rock' has died age 85. She died Dec. 30 of heart failure at a Burbank hospital. Gloria Pall, was the sultry hostess of a 1950' Los Angeles TV show that was cancelled because her character's sexy poses and flirtatious comments were deemed too hot for television. She had a brief acting career which included her "sexy leg" part with Elvis in 'Jailhouse Rock'.

January 06 - Elvis ... The End Of A Long Cold Winter

For 22 years Darwin Lamm published a quarterly magazine devoted to Elvis that focused on his music, his images and his legacy. After moving to a twice-a-year format for the past two years, Lamm, 71, is now closing "Elvis ... The Magazine."

A year and a half ago, Lamm semiretired and moved to Palm Springs. Lamm saw Elvis perform several times, said he never actually met Elvis and he blew a chance to meet him in 1971. Lamm was in Las Vegas with some friends and was offered a chance to meet Elvis at a show but passed because all his friends wanted to tag along and it was a hassle. Lamm is working on a new series of books called "Memories of Elvis," which he said would include interviews with Elvis' friends and fellow performers.

Hot Love In A Long, Cold Winter

Out shortly is the new Straight Arrow release “Hot Love In A Long, Cold Winter”, which contains the St. Petersburg and Columbia 1977 concerts from which the Straight Arrow import label obtained the original audience recorded cassettes.

From the press-release:
The Elvis tour in February of that year was affected in various ways by the weather conditions, which sometimes resulted in delays at airports and illness among the musicians and crew members. Presley himself was in less than stellar condition, and complained of a sore throat on some nights. Elvis gained some weight since the last tour, and the manic feel of those final December nights was now gone, but from February 14, he was in good voice for all remaining shows of his tour, and he even included rarities like ‘Release Me’ and ‘Blueberry Hill’.
A large chunk of the February 14 show and 2 tracks from February 18 were released from a soundboard sources, but we feel that these audience recorded tapes makes for a more entertaining and exciting listening experience. Note: The February 18, 1977 show was released in 1992 ("Elvis Release Me In Concert") by the Peaf label, which was taken from an inferior source. If you liked our previous outing, „Chicago Double-Strike“, you will enjoy this new release, too.
