Graceland Lights Up Pink

Elvis Presley's Graceland will light up pink for the first week of October to remind everyone of the benefits of early detection in the battle against breast cancer.

Graceland joins hundreds of famous landmarks, buildings and monuments around the world that are shining pink lights as symbols of hope and empowerment. Graceland will go pink starting tonight, October 1, through Sunday, October 7.

Visit Cancer.org for more information on how you can help raise awareness.

Construction: $12M building permit filed for Elvis Presley Enterprises

A building permit valued at nearly $12 million was filed Sept. 28 for “shell & core” work at 1032 Craft Road. Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. (EPE) was listed as the owner and tenant and Flintco Inc. as the contractor.

When asked about the permit, a representative for EPE responded:

“The permit is part of the ongoing expansion at Elvis Presley's Graceland. In 2016, we opened The Guest House at Graceland; in 2017 Elvis Presley's Memphis; in 2018 the all-new Chapel in the Woods and, in 2019, we will be opening an expanded 80,000 square feet of exhibition space. This space was originally approved in 2016 and further community input was gathered at several town hall meetings.”

In April, the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) for Memphis & Shelby County approved a bond application that requested financing — not to exceed $20 million — for the planned 80,000-square-foot exhibition building.

September 28 - The Artistry of Books (Updated)

The upcoming book "From Cover to Vinyl | The Artistry of Elvis Bootlegs" is being printed and ready for shipping in about 3 weeks. The 300 pages book (weight, 1,6 kilo) is limited to 750 copies and there will definitely be no reprint.

From the original press-release:
When 'Bootleg Elvis' was published in 2012, it sold out almost immediately, and became an instant favorite of Presley collectors all over the world, most calling it the Bootleg Bible.

Since then, additional rare bootleg titles have been discovered, not to mention many unexpected variations of some classic albums. So … it seemed to be time for a new and updated look at this world.

Whereas Bootleg Elvis mainly relied on text to tell the story, this new edition chooses to focus on photographs. Using the 2012 classic as a reference point, we decided to feature scans of every cover, label, piece of vinyl and insert for you. This will make it easy to identify each and every pressing and variation.

We also decided to split the original book into two volumes. In the first, every known bootleg 7" and 10" record will be noted. The second will cover all the wonderful 12" releases and is scheduled for a Summer 2019 release.
In Bootleg Elvis, some of the original bootleggers were given space to recount the ins and outs of making their releases a reality. This time we allow the FBI some equal time, and let you see their side of the story. We were able to lay our hands on a massive collection of FBI files regarding the Presley bootleg industry, and will share the best of that material, for the first time ever, in this book.
For example, in the first volume we’ll show how the FBI prepared for the
infamous August 14, 1980 bootleg raid in Memphis … it soon became known as Black Thursday.

From the FECC forum:
One of the original authors of the original "Bootleg Elvis" book posted on the FECC forum (superrg » Sat Sep 29, 2018 1:35 pm):

Sorry I did not post here for a long time. I wonder, who is behind this new bootleg Elvis book. If there are members of our original crew, I - the author - was not informed about it.

Also, they way the layout looks, I very much doubt it that Felix has anything to do with it. After all, he is a top-class professional when it comes to graphic design and these scans do not look overly gorgeous.

But then ... how did these guys get hands on the FBI files that, initially, were sent to Felix by Paul Dowling? Also, how could these guys lay hands on obviously all the record covers, inner sleeves, records, sleeves, if not from Felix?
He travelled Europe and had many Elvis collectors and bootleggers from overseas providing him with scans. I really do wonder.

And, last but not least, should there be any text passages taken from the book - text that I wrote and that is, as to our book, copyrighted ... the producers of this strange product will definitely be in trouble.

So if anyone would please share a little more light on this one, I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

September 27 - Cancelled and Re-issued (Updated)

The 3DM label cancelled their release of the newly discovered complete home-recordings.

From the label
We are very, very sorry to inform you that, due to the low response of our offer to give out the home recordings restored on CD for only production costs, is cancelled. We need a minimum of 300 orders to break even. At the moment the numbers are too low.

The material is ready with correct facts and background information. Not like what all announced releases of these home recordings state.

We wanted to enclose the complete fool sessions and a short unreleased conversation from a German fan with Elvis in Germany in 1958 about music with was very informative from Elvis side. And also rare kindly donated unpublished photos. We realize that an act of generosity less appreciated than asking the full amount.

We thank the people who have confidence in our release, they were right, And as a thank you we will make sure they get our regular upcoming Elvis release for production cost. We promise it is really great.

Debut Vinyl

Due for re-release on November 2, 2018 from the Forced Exposure Records label is Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album.

September 26 - Asheville Marathon

The AudiRec import-label announced the release of the 4 CD box "The Asheville Marathon". This 4 CD set comes packed in a long-box with three different covers and CD's with different label-print.

From the press-release:
Another new release just announced, this time the Audirec label comed with a 4-CD longbox but this time the longbox comes in 3 different variations, this means 3 different covers and from each set also discs come with different print. The well known import label AudiRec” is back with a very nice and special 4 CD box, titled "Asheville Marathon"

Hear three of the most unusual Elvis Presley Shows of the 1970´s! When Elvis came to Asheville, NC in late July of 1975 to play the final shows of his running tour, he was indeed in a “giving” mood. Elvis delivered a whole bunch of rarely performed song material and handled a big part of them in a kind of “Elvis By Request” style. Since his Record Company RCA was not on hand to record these shows professionally, we can be thankful that fans did record the shows at least with private (non-professional) equipment. One thing is clear: It would have been a big pity if none of those three shows would have been recorded and therefore been “lost” forever.

In July 1975, Elvis played 21 shows in 11 different cities. This tour was rated as being one of the very best in Elvis' last years. His powerful vocal delivery, his entertaining mood and his willingness to improvise various unusual songs are what make this tour such a stand-out, and the final 3 shows in Asheville, NC were simply stunning!

In Asheville Elvis also played the longest shows of the tour and performed many rarely sung songs. He was kind of promoting his new album “Elvis Today” with “Shake A Hand”, “Fairytale”, “T.R.O.U.B.L.E.” and “Pieces Of My Life”. More than any time before he was interacting with his audience, singing songs by request. For example “Memphis Tennessee”, “An American Trilogy”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Something”, “Return To Sender” or “Wooden Heart”.

Elvis was in a hilarious mood. He gave away several golden rings and a fan in the first row - Mike Harris from Asheville - was lucky to get Elvis’ Gibson Ebony Dove guitar! It was the famous guitar which Elvis used in Aloha From Hawaii. Later in the show, Mike Harris thought Elvis was gonna ask for the guitar back, but Elvis leaned down and said: “'No that's yours. I gave that to you for a reason, and it's gonna help you out some day.”

These shows were previously released, but all original releases are very hard to find now. Instead of doing a simple “copy & paste” job, we have asked our friends from SA to help us to enhance the sound from scratch, so we are sure that those shows never sounded better! The release is presented in a strong and stable 25 x 14 cm de-luxe 4 CD Long-Box accompanied by a 16-page booklet, filled with a great collection of photos taken in Asheville and press reviews.

To make our release even more attractive for serious collectors, we present it in 3 different variations. It means 3 different covers and each cover´s got its own disc labels, too! The content of the CD´s does of course NOT vary! Choose the one version you like most or “collect all three”! In any case do not miss the opportunity to own your copy / copies of  The “Asheville Marathon“! It’s the ultimate release of Elvis' magical July 1975 Asheville shows!

September 20 - My Wish Came True In Rhode Island

Three new audience-recorded concert releases were announced by the Straight Arrow import-label; "Ruble In Rhode Island", "My Wish Came True" and "There's A Sweet Spirit In This Place".

From the press-release - Rumble In Rhode Island: Musical Chairs at The King's Lair:

Our first release is titled “Rumble In Rhode Island: Musical Chairs at The King’s Lair”. This is Straight Arrow’s very first release from Elvis' June/July 1974 tour and the Providence concert is easily one of the best of the tour!

The Straight Arrow team is always looking for rare, unknown or seemingly lost recordings. Once again, the labels researchers were successful - the Providence, June 22nd, 1974 3pm is a completely new show, even for die-hard Elvis fans. It has never been in circulation - in any form! (note: there is CDR with a so-called Providence, June 22, 1974 Afternoon show in circulation, but this one is wrongly dated recording, in fact this is the evening show).

Our CD is taken directly from an original audience recorded mastertape source. It was recorded by the same guy who taped those other Providence concerts on June 26, 1976 (afternoon) and the May 23rd, 1977 shows, which we released in 2011 („Matinee Majesty“ and „Funny How Time Slips Away“, both hard to find CDs now). The sound quality is very good for an off-line recording in a big auditorium. Highlights include a pounding 'Big Boss Man', and a truly dynamite 'Trying To Get To You'. 'Help Me' is sung with great warmth and sincerity.

This release is presented in a de-luxe 6-panel digipak. Unfortunately, only very few useful Providence June 22, 1974 3pm photos were available, and other shots taken during June/July 1974 tour have been used.

Tracklist01. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 02. C. C. Rider - 03. I Got A Woman / Amen - 04. Love Me - 05. Tryin' To Get To You - 06. All Shook Up - 07. Love Me Tender - 08. Hound Dog - 09. Fever - 10. Polk Salad Annie - 11. Why Me Lord - 12. Suspicious Minds - 13. Introductions of singers, musicians, orchestra - 14. I Can't Stop Loving You - 15. Help Me - 16. An American Trilogy - 17. Let Me Be There (with reprise) - 18. Funny How Time Slips Away - 19. Big Boss Man - 20. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel - 21. Can't Help Falling In Love - 22. Closing Vamp / Announcements.

From the press-release - My Wish Came True:

Our second release is titled „My Wish Came True“. It was the 1st tour of 1977 and in spite of his unhealthy look, Elvis was in solid voice - especially near the end of the tour. February 20 is one of best shows of the tour and it marked the first time that Elvis attempted his recent single „Moody Blue“.

Our release has been taken directly from a 1st generation copy of an original audience recorded master cassette tape, as recorded by Claude Baker (aka Crazy Canuck), who passed away in September 2016. Claude attended, and recorded, all of Elvis' shows during the February tour of 1977.
Portions of the Charlotte concert were previously released from a soundboard tape on the official 'Follow That Dream' label, but this show has never been available on CD in its entirety before. Note: This is the very last audience-recorded show from the February 1977 tour that is still unreleased. The sound quality is very good. There are highlights a-plenty, including a soulful 'You Gave Me A Mountain', strong versions of 'My Way' and 'How Great Thou Art', and a truly gorgeous 'Unchained Melody'.

As usual, this release is presented in a de-luxe 6-panel digipak, with a collection of photos taken in Charlotte, February 20th, 1977 and two local press reviews. With special thanks to our dear friend, the late Bob Heis.

Tracklist01. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 02. C. C. Rider - 03. I Got A Woman / Amen - 04. Love Me - 05. Fairytale - 06. You Gave Me A Mountain - 07. Jailhouse Rock - 08. O Sole Mio (Sherrill Nielsen) / It's Now Or Never - 09. Little Sister - 10. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel - 11. My Way - 12. Moody Blue (excerpt) - 13. How Great Thou Art - 14. From the press-release - There's A Sweet Spirit In This Place

Our 3rd CD in this batch is somewhat special. Originally we planned only the two CDs above. But just weeks ago we were suddenly able to obtain this very interesting recording in excellent sound - and complete. We are aware of the fact that there is a so-called May 4th, 1976 D/S in circulation, but it presents only half of the show in average sound. It was even spliced with about 30 minutes of May 2nd, 1976 D/S! What we are releasing now is the real McCoy, folks!

So now for the first time ever - in excellent audience recorded sound, and complete from beginning to the end! The show is a true delight - Elvis is in a relaxed mood, singing remarkably well... Best show and best sound of the season!

This release is presented in a de-luxe 6-panel digipak with a collection of photos taken in Lake Tahoe, May 1976 as well as an original pre-season promotional article.

Tracklist: 01. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 02. C. C. Rider - 03. I Got A Woman / Amen - 04. Love Me - 05. If You Love Me Let Me Know - 06. You Gave Me A Mountain - 07. All Shook Up - 08. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel - 09. Tryin' To Get To You (with reprise) - 10. My Way - 11. Polk Salad Annie - 12. Introductions of singers, musicians, orchestra - 13. Early Morning Rain (instrumental) - 14. What'd I Say - 15. Drum Solo - (Ronnie Tutt) - 16. Bass Solo (Jerry Scheff) - 17. Piano Solo (Tony Brown) - 18. Electric Piano & Clavinet Solo (Lady Madonna - David Briggs) - 19. School Day - 20. I'll Remember You - 21. Hurt #1 - 22. Hurt #2 - 23. Hound Dog - 24. Hawaiian Wedding Song - 25. Elvis SUN Singlet

The Finnish Fan Club has produced another softcover book(let); "SUN Singlet". 55 pages written in Finnish. In "Elvis SUN Singlet" each SUN session is covered with notes about the tracks recorded and either attempted or scheduled for recording.

The booklet, perhaps contoversially, includes discussion of a recording session on 26 June 1954 at which Elvis, Scotty and Bill were to record tracks including the obscure I Don’t Hurt Anymore, Billy Eckstine hit I Apologize, the legendary Rag Mop, and the Dean Martin classic, That’s Amore. The narrative notes that "no recording tape" exists for the session.

The booklet features both sides of each of Elvis’ five legendary SUN singles in full color. There are also numerous rare images of a fresh-faced, young Elvis from the period, including him “live” on stage at various venues across the South. Some of the stand-out photos are Dewey Phillips at his DJ desk at WHBQ in Memphis, a long shot of the front of a pre Memphis Recording Service/SUN Studio building and color images of Elvis' Memphis Recording Service accounts.
