August 16 - 46 Years Ago

Today marks the 46th anniversary of Elvis Presley's untimely death on August 16, 1977.

Some artists fade away after they die, but not Elvis! His legacy is just as diverse as it is relevant 46 years later.

Fans around the world remember and celebrate Elvis Presley the man, his life and his legacy. Fans gathered at Graceland on the evening of August 15th to carry a candle up to Meditation Garden in quiet remembrance of Elvis'. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that Graceland officials put the head count at The August 15 Candlelight Vigil - 2023 marks the 45th annual vigil - as "close to 15,000 people".

The ceremony for the 46th anniversary was organized as always by the Elvis Country Fan Club. Fortunately a lot of young fans joined the crowd this year.

Graceland invites fans from around the world to
watch the annual Candlelight Vigil (live from Graceland) online to be part of this very special evening honoring the life and legacy of Elvis Presley. Click >>> here to watch it.

This year fans not only remembered Elvis, but also Lisa Marie. Jerry Schilling, along with other special guests, for a celebration and remembrance of the life of Lisa Marie Presley as told through music, personal stories, photos, and videos. Joel Weinshanker spoke to the crowd noting that, "The only thing important to Lisa Marie was Graceland and her Dad's legacy".

During the event a previously unreleased duet between Elvis and Lisa Marie on 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was played over a slideshow remembering Lisa Marie.

Priscilla posted on Facebook: Today marks the 46th anniversary of Elvis' passing. His memory never fades. Thank you to the millions of fans for their continued love. There will never be another Elvis.

With love and peace,

Billy Smith posted: 46 years ago.  To some it's a lifetime.  To me it seems like yesterday.  Every time August 16th rolls around, it's like I'm stuck in a horror movie.  I see how the day starts, with love, joy and hope.  A new day and an opportunity to tell Elvis, "if you need me, I'll be there".   This is what I was going to tell him, after we had our last conversation on the 14th.  I was so looking forward to seeing him that day.
August 16th, 1977 was a sad day for millions.  But, for some it was devastating.  It totally crushed me.  I could never put the words Elvis and death together.  The thought of Elvis dying never crossed my mind.  When I heard the news of his death, I fell into a deep state of shock.  I literally had to be shaken, physically to bring me back to my senses.

After I made a phone call to Graceland to find out if the news on the radio was true.  I walked to my car. Just as I was about to open the door, I fell to my knees and cried out to God.  WHY GOD, WHY!!!  Thoughts raced through my head.  If I had been there, maybe I could have done something.  You should have been there, Billy.  Dammit Billy, you should have been there.

As I was driving to Graceland, all the great times I had with Elvis came to me.  When I got to Graceland, the crowd was so big, that a policeman had to move people away so I could drive through the gates.  People placed their hands on my car, some shouted my name as I slowly drove by.

I drove to the back and parked as I have done since 1969.  Only this time it seemed eerily quiet.  I didn't hear the birds singing in the trees, or the normal sounds you hear outside.  I did notice it was unbearably hot, though.  The first thing I saw was Rick and David standing in the backyard.  I walked toward them.  As I was passing the pink Cadillac, I remembered Elvis picking me up from school in it one day.  I lightly placed my finger on it and dragged it along the length of the car as I walk by.

When I got to Rick and David, we hugged.  All I could say was, this can't be real.  Someone please wake me up.  The 3 of us stood in silence for a few minutes.  Off in the distance I saw Lisa riding her golf cart.  I asked, does Lisa know yet?  Rick and David said, she knows somethings wrong, but they are waiting for Priscilla to tell her.

Lisa saw us standing together, then she drove up to us.  She asked, Uncle Billy do you want to take a ride with me?  My heart sank, I fought back the tears.  I said, I will after a while sweetie.  She smiled then drove away.

I asked, where's Daddy.  Rick and David said, he's in the kitchen.  I said, I'm going to check on him, I'll be back in a little while.  They said, okay.  When I opened the door in the den, I heard moaning and sobbing like I've never heard before.  I saw Vernon sitting in a chair in the kitchen.  I walked up to him and bent down to hug him.  He placed his arms around me and pulled me close.  He was shaking uncontrollably. He said, he's gone Billy.  My sonny's gone.  (that's what Vernon called Elvis, sonny) I was at a loss for words.  I didn't know what to say. As we hugged, I managed to say, I know Daddy.  I love you.  He stood up and continued to hang onto to me.  He put his hand on the back of my head and pulled me closer, then he began to pat my head.  I stood there praying, God please be with Daddy, comfort him.  He began to wabble, one of the maids saw this and came over to help me put him back in the chair.  I said, if you need me Daddy, I'll be around the house.  I'll stay as long as you need me, too.  He said, thank you Billy.

I walked out the front door.  I saw the crowd had gotten bigger now.  I could feel the hurt and sorrow of all the people outside the gates.  It was too much to bear, so I walked to the backyard.

Rick and David had gone someplace else by now.  I walked over to the swing set and took a seat.  I sat there until sun set.  My mind was full of memories.  Everything I looked at brought back a memory.

I checked on Daddy one more time, before I left.  They said, the doctor gave him something to settle him down, and that he was laying down.  I didn't want to disturb him, so I left.  As I was leaving one of the guys said, we're going to need you for security for the next few days, will you help.  I said, yes, I'll be here.
When I got home, I broke down.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think this day would come.  Even to this day, it haunts me.  All of this and more plays out in my head.  The sites, the sounds are there from this day.  It's a day I will never forget.

In closing, I'd like to ask a favor.  46 years ago, today at 3:30pm the official news came out.  Would you join me in a moment of silence, at 3:30pm?    Thank you in advance.

I chose this photo today, because this is what I saw when I got to Graceland.  It's a photo from August 16th, 1977.

August 14 - New Elvis Special and Movie?

In an article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Joel Weinshanker, managing partner and majority owner of Elvis Presley Enterprises, commented on several new projects coming up.

Neither Priscilla Presley nor Riley Keough are expected to attend any events during Elvis Week. Jerry Schilling will speak at a public tribute titled 'A Celebration of Lisa Marie Presley' set for 5 p.m. August 15th at the Graceland Soundstage. Schilling said the "Celebration" will showcase photographs of and recordings by Lisa Marie, and will feature music from singer Andy Childs.

Weinshanker said that Priscilla Presley and Riley Keoughey were taking a break from public Elvis-related appearances during this tumultuous year, but “Riley will be involved in any number of Elvis media projects in the future. When you see Riley’s involvement with Graceland, I think it’ll be movies and events. I don’t think she’ll be doing a lot of public speaking.”

The next Elvis movie is Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley biopic 'Priscilla', set to hit theaters October 27, 2023 but “that movie is not something the estate is involved with in any way, nor did the estate allow any of the (Elvis) music to be used,” Weinshanker said.

However, two other major Elvis media projects are on the way, he said. He described them only as a “network Christmas special coming this year” and “another Elvis movie that’s probably two-and-a-half years away.”

“The estate has a great track record of being involved in great things for people to see,” he said, citing Luhrmann’s 'ELVIS' as a prime example. “So if something’s coming from the estate, you know it has an honest point of view and it’s something that Elvis would be of.”

Weinshanker also said that the Graceland attendance for this year likely will be close to the pre-COVID highs of 400,000 to 500,000 visitors, a big upswing from 2020, the year of the pandemic shutdown, when about 190,000 people made it to the mansion. He said the 'ELVIS' movie was a factor, especially in boosting Elvis' appeal among teenage boys and young men, who apparently admired and identified with Austin Butler's Elvis. "That's the one demographic we're seeing more of," he said.

Who's Counting

Erik Lorenzen announced that there will be a name-change for his upcoming triple concert book set.

He posted: Two of the world's most famous Elvis historians, Jean-Etienne Baduel and Keith Flynn, have concluded that all the shows Elvis did from 1969 to 1977 were 1124, and not 1126. Some web sites show a special 3.00am show on September 7/8, 1970, but this didn't happen!

So the new title for the book will be 'Eleven Hundred and Twenty-Four'.

August 10 - TV Guide Celebrations

Elvis Presley graces the cover of the U.S. TV Guide magazine for the August 14th - September 3rd triple issue. Inside an article on Steve Binders 'Re-inventing Elvis' documentary.

This issue looks at the new documentary 'Reinventing Elvis' which features Steve Binder's account of the night of Elvis’ comeback — the mounting pressure, the intensity of the production, and the fact that Elvis almost didn’t make it onto the stage.
From the get-go, director John Scheinfeld ignites the story he wants to tell with something interesting and a purpose to follow through on. What truly went into the making of that special, and what would it ultimately mean for Elvis Presley?

... And Then There Was The Book

Originally announced in November 2021 for a June 2022 release is the 400-page book '... And Then There Was Elvis - A Superfan's Adventures In The Elvis World'. It contains the richly illustrated memoirs of superfan Virginia Coons curated by Elaine Christan .

DescriptionVirginia Coons was a super-fan. Her interest in Elvis Presley started with his breakthrough in the mid-fifties, and continued up to her very last day. Over the years she met up with Elvis many times.

Coons served as a direct link between fans in America, England and the rest of Europe, making sure that the latest LP and single releases found their way overseas. Not only did she have contact with Elvis, but also with everyone close to him including Priscilla, Colonel Parker’s office and RCA.

Virginia Coon’s memories were curated by her daughter, Elaine Christan, into this 400-page hardback book. Anyone who reads The Elvis Files magazine will be familiar with Virginia Coons. And now, all her personal memories and stories, illustrated with many high resolution photos and candid pictures from Erik Lorentzen’s collection came together in this memoir by Elaine Christan and Virginia Coons, ‘... And Then There Was Elvis - A Superfan’s Adventures in the Elvis World’. It hold so many fun-to-read stories, its incredible.

Congratulations

Kathy Westmoreland, who sang soprano with Elvis from 1970 until 1977 (replacing Millie Kirkham), celebrates her 78th birthday, congratulations!

August 09 - Eleven Hundred and Twenty-Six

Erik Lorenzen announced the October 2023 release of the 1,200-page Deluxe set 'Eleven Hundred and Twenty-Six' by him and Jean-Etienne Baduel. A new comprehensive reference on Elvis Presley's concert performances from 1969 to 1977. The set contains 3 volumes, housed in a
slipcase.
Publicity stated: About three years ago Erik was asked by collectors of his books to do a project on the time when Elvis returned to live performing at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, and all concerts that followed. And now, the Elvis Files Team presents a new set titled 'Eleven Hundred and Twenty-Six'.

The 3-book-set covers everything from the Opening Night performance on July 31, 1969 until the last concert Elvis Presley ever did on June 26, 1977 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis.

It includes detailed information on all the concerts, every suit he wore on stage, all the information on every CD ever released by RCA, Sony and the Follow That Dream Collectors label and more. Over 1,200 pages, packed with information and the best photos, presented on heavy glossy paper as you are used to from The Elvis Files. You may want to read the title as 'Eleven Hundred and Twenty-SEX' because Elvis was pure sex on stage.

The first time Elvis Presley played Las Vegas, the critics hated him. Appearing in the Venus Room at the New Frontier Hotel in the spring of 1956, the 21-year-old hillbilly crooner with the dreamy eyes and well-lubricated hips was billed as "America's only atomic-powered singer". Just two years earlier, he was driving a truck in Memphis for US$45 a week, and now he had a record contract with RCA Victor and a movie deal with Paramount Studios.

In 1969, when he returned to live performing in Las Vegas Presley told his audience: "It's been too long since I’ve done anything except making movies and cut records. When I made my television special last year, I realized how much I missed the excitement of live audiences. Right then I decided I'd like to do a nightclub date or two and see people from the stage again. I want to get back where the personal contact is."

Elvis Presley thrilled audiences for decades with his legendary swagger, good looks and unique vocal style. Among his many concerts over the years, the one that garners much historical attention is his final performance at the Indianapolis’s Market Square Arena on June 26, 1977. His final performance, to a crowd of nearly 18,000 people. This new 1,200-page Deluxe set covers it all.

And the good news is that is available earlier than we had planned, as this was supposed to be a Christmas 2023 release. We made only 1,000 copies, so don't miss out on the great set! (the publicity text edited for publication on this blog).

Here are some previews:

Erik Lorenzen added: Someone has asked if there is any new information and pictures in these three books.

To you we can answer that never before has a single Tour Show, Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe Sessions been more thoroughly described with info than the French Jean-Etienne Baduel has done for this huge release. We are truly grateful for his wonderful contribution and it has been a real pleasure to work with him. His knowledge of Elvis' concerts is described to the smallest detail. And as in all our publications, a lot of "unseen" photos.

August 08 - Congratulations!

Elvis Presley's former hairstylist and "spiritual guide" Larry Geller celebrated his 84th birthday, congratulations!

Review Elvis Movie: Fact Vs. Fiction

Baz Luhrmann’s ‘ELVIS’ movie put a bright multicolored spotlight on Elvis Presley. It drew many people to the cinema and digital platforms, and for many younger viewers, this was probably their first “in-depth” introduction to the man and legacy of Elvis Presley.

Luhrmann’s movie was not a biopic as we know it from the biopics on Freddy Mercury, Elton John, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin or Tina Turner, telling a real person's life's story. Luhrmann used Elvis Presley’s life and relation with his manager Colonel Tom Parker, as a colorful canvas to paint how America changed from the fifties to the seventies in the last century. So the movie is about Elvis, and at the same time, it's not.

And now, one year after the movie’s release, Trina Young published her book ‘Fact vs. Fiction in the 2022 ELVIS Movie’ helping us to distinguish what happened on screen and in real life.

Design

The book is a 211-page black and white paperback. The design is simple; the gold glitters are a nice nod to the glamour of Baz’ movie, inside the it is primarily a text-book with a small picture section.

The author presented the book as an “unauthorized analysis” and the pictures reflect that. Although understandable, that is a pity for a book like this which compares facts and fiction. You want to see Baz Luhrman's take on the events and our man next to the real / original events. Especially as Catherine Walker and her team did such a great job recreating the Elvis world from the fifties, sixties and seventies. But this would have meant that Warner Bros. had to be involved, which would ultimately affect the unbiased analysis Young presents us.

Young has a captivating writing style which takes the readers by the hand, helping them to distinguish Elvis’ reality and Baz Luhrmann’s artistic license in a pleasant and entertaining way.

Content

In an interview with Piers Beagley for the >>> Elvis Information Network (click to read the complete interview), Young explained her reason for writing the book: “I believe most people understand that artistic license is necessary in a film to tell a person's life story in under 3 hours … it is not the fact that certain events or people in Presley's life were left out of the film ... the issue for me is how significant are the things that were left out and how do they change the perception of Presley's history.”

To help the readers tell the difference between facts and fiction, Young structured the book and the way she presents the facts and fiction nicely. She sets the scene for her analysis with three introductory chapters painting the backstory, the filming and the reception of the ‘ELVIS’ movie.

The analysis itself comprises around two-thirds of the book, which closes with a final chapter reflecting on the influence of the film, portrayals of Elvis and Colonel Parker, the many awards won and more. I learned that the involvement of Joel Weinshanker and the Authentic brands Group was much bigger than that of the Presley family member, who in my opinion, were not entirely honest in their communication about their involvement in this project.

For the analysis itself Young developed a format: each scene is given a “truth” score regarding historical accuracy on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the most truthful). Each score is based on an average of three factors: correct place, correct time, and correct storyline.
The scenes were divided in a way that represents a different historical fact relating to Presley’s life. For this analysis, Young divided the movie into 86 scenes, each with a timestamp so the reader can easily find the scene in the movie.

Looking at the bibliography Young did not use the original script as a basis, but the identified scenes work well, also due to the added time-stamp.

This format works well for a reference book like this one, although I would have made each scene stand out in the text for easy access. Following the rating of each scene, Young presents us “facts vs. fiction” in an entertaining and insightful narrative, not leaving out “1” ratings when something didn’t happen (as interpreted by Luhrmann). What he often did was combine certain real-life events into one scene.

A good example is the iconic scene of the riot at Elvis’ 1956 Russwood Park show.

Scene 37 (50:20) - Elvis performs defiantly at Russwood Park in Memphis. (Austin Butler is singing in this scene). Truth score: 8.5/10

Place (10/10): Elvis performed at Russwood Park a few days after The Steve Allen show.

Time (10/10): The concert at Russwood Park in Memphis took place on July 4, 1956.

Storyline (5.5/10): The Russwood Park show was actually a benefit for two local charities: the Memphis Press-Scimitar's Cynthia Milk Fund which provided baby formula for local families in need, and also the Variety Club’s Hospital for Convalescent Children who have had rheumatic fever. In real life, Presley appeared on Wink Martindale’s Dance Party show a few weeks prior along with Dewey Phillips stating that he would donate his 14-diamond initial ring (worth US$600 at the time) for a door prize at the show.

While the scene fits perfectly in the flow of the story Luhrmann presents to us - the song choice enforces the film’s narrative that Elvis was rebelling against society and Colonel Parker - it never happened.

Yes there was a show in 1956 at Russwood Park, but no, he did not sing ‘Trouble’, that song wasn’t recorded yet by Elvis, but was the opener for the 1968 ‘NBC TV Show, known as the ’68 Comeback Special’).

Yes, Elvis gave some wild performances and officials told both him and Parker to clean up the act and “tone down his suggestive body movement”. But the wild performance with Elvis rolling around on the stage with the RCA Nipper dog actually took place on October 28, 1957 at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The only chaos was the girls rushing the stage when Elvis appeared. The reference to the riots may be to a 1956 show at Gator Bowl Baseball Park in Jacksonville where Elvis teased the screaming girls by saying he'd "see them backstage after the show," prompting a mad rush toward the stage and a riot that spilled into the streets. A group cornered the singer in his dressing room and tore his clothes off in their competition to grab a souvenir. Elvis had to be rescued by police from what has become known as the first Presley riot.

Besides correcting the dates and locations, the author goes further to tell the complete story. As discussed in the author’s first book, ‘Elvis - Behind The Legend', Presley never set out to be a rebellious rock and roll singer. His original goal was to be part of a gospel quartet, and when that didn’t work out, he wanted to sing ballads like Dean Martin. The Rock and Roll thing literally happened by accident that night at Sun Studio. As Elvis said, they “just stumbled upon it”.

But Elvis ended up representing the rebellious persona of rock and roll music in the way he wore his hair, the way he dressed, the way he moved onstage, and the fact that he often chose to sing music by Black artists.

This example illustrates what the book is all about. I’ll leave it at just one example, as I “don’t want to spoil the ending”.

Reading a book like this, and looking at the work and style of this director you know beforehand that facts and fiction won’t match. But that’s not a problem when you look at the bigger picture and the story the director wants to tell. You can’t put a complete life, especially one as rich as Elvis’, in 2 hours and 39 minutes of screen time without making some shortcuts or leaving certain events and historical and contemporary figures out. Like stated above, the question is  how significant are the things that were left out and how do they change the perception of Presley's history. Luhrmann said in an interview “Elvis was not just another rock star. The things that happened in such a short lifetime are almost unimaginable”.

I’d like to add that he was the first rock star, so he - and his manager and other people involved - had to discover and do everything for the first time. So for us it is easy to look back and have an opinion.

I can only applaud Trina Young for the tremendous research that must have gone into this analysis. With over 8o scenes to analyze, Young must have covered a lot of ground identifying facts and fiction in the movie and checking the facts through research.

The bibliography, with biographers like Guralnick, Hanson, Hopkins, Jorgensen , Osborne,  Nash and Vellenga but also familiar names like Binder, Esposito, Klein, Lacker, Presley, Schilling, Smith and West, illustrate some of the sources used. So we know we’re good there. What made this book very readable for me was the inclusion of the many quotes from the people who either worked on the movie, or were present when the events took place in the fifties, sixties or seventies.

Conclusion

Trina Young’s fourth Elvis book is an interesting analysis of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘ELVIS’ movie. The book is well written, thoroughly researched and puts the record straight on the Elvis Presley story, without putting the movie down.

The book opens a new world for moviegoers wanting to know more about Elvis, and serves as a factchecker for all the fans, me included, who were taken in by the movie and the artistic license Luhrmann and his team allowed themselves for their ballroom blitz take of Elvis Presley’s life (as a canvas for a  changing America in the 50’s, 60’s and ‘70’s) wanting to remember what really happened.
