May 30 - Weekend Charts

The Elvis estate voluntarily dismissed its civil suit against the Beretta gun company on May 29. Written in the court document closing the case is a one-sentence explanation: “[Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.] gives notice that it dismisses this action with prejudice because the dispute giving rise to the filing of a civil action has been settled.” An email was sent to the Elvis estate’s attorney, but there is no word from them regarding how the case was settled.

The estate filed suit against Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta S.pA. in April, claiming that the Italian gun company used the Elvis Presley’s likeness to promote new shotguns in an advertising campaign. Additionally, at press events Beretta had Elvis impersonators appear, perform and greet gun enthusiasts, and in some cases the company had the impersonators pose with weapons.

Graceland Auction

Elvis Presley’s Graceland will be hosting its first-ever auction of Graceland-authenticated Elvis artifacts during Elvis Week in Memphis this August. This unprecedented “Auction at Graceland” will be the first auction of a limited number of Elvis artifacts authenticated by the archivists at Graceland, and the first-ever to take place at Graceland. The auction is scheduled for Thursday, August 14, 2014, with fans and private collectors from around the world expected to participate onsite and online. Graceland also announced the launch of Graceland Authentication, a new professional service for private Elvis Presley collectors, who can now have their artifacts authenticated and appraised by the highly-experienced archive staff at Graceland.

The Elvis Week auction will feature a number of rare and exceptional artifacts from the collection of Greg Page, founding member of The Wiggles and one of the world’s biggest and well-known Elvis Presley collectors, as well as items from other private collectors. Graceland’s exhaustive authentication process for the auction will set a new “Gold Standard” for pop culture artifact authentication, ensuring that every Elvis item is the real thing. All of the items in the auction will be offered from third-party collectors and none of the items included in the auction will come from the treasured Graceland Archives. The mansion and all artifacts in the Graceland Archives continue to be owned by Lisa Marie Presley and are not for sale.

Graceland Authentication, a new Graceland-owned authentication and appraisal service, will enable the Graceland Archives staff to offer their services to collectors for the first time – not just for auctions, but also to ensure artifact accuracy and the value of privately-owned artifacts. With years of experience in artifact authentication, the Graceland archivists supervise and curate the largest collection of Elvis Presley and Graceland artifacts, memorabilia, clothing, documents and photographs in the world. Graceland Authentication will also be coordinating and authenticating the Elvis Week auction submissions.

Graceland recently brought on Louis Bollman, a seasoned expert with tremendous experience in pop culture artifact and collectable auctions, who will be leading Graceland Authentication, working closely with the Graceland staff to ensure the highest quality authentication services and auctions.

“Graceland Authenticated will establish an entirely new standard of pop culture artifact authentication and appraisal,” stated Jack Soden, CEO. “Throughout the years, fans and collectors have come to us with amazing Elvis artifacts, asking us to authenticate their items. We’ve also seen Elvis memorabilia sold at auctions, which were not properly authenticated. We’re pleased that Graceland now has the staffing and infrastructure to evaluate these artifacts, determine if they are, in fact, actual Elvis items, and if so, give them the official Graceland Authenticated seal of approval.”

For more information on how to submit items for consideration for authentication services by Graceland Authentication, and for consideration of items to be included in the first-ever Elvis Week auction, please visit Graceland.com/Auction and sign up to receive updates via email, along with upcoming details on Graceland Authentication service and auction fees.

On A Winning Streak!

The Straight Arrow import-label announced the release of the 3CD set “On A Winning Streak”, featuring three strong shows as recorded on February 17 (DS + MS) and 18 (DS), 1973… which means that all of it was recorded within a day.

From the press-release:
This release documents what a strain it was on Elvis’ creativity and general well-being to be performing under such a tight schedule for a whole month, but it also shows how well he actually coped under the circumstances. All three shows are tight, lively and entertaining, and you can really hear that the whole room was buzzing with excitement at his shows. All three shows are well-paced, featuring a solid selection of concert favorites as well as songs from the recent ‘Aloha From Hawaii’ television special. Elvis is clearly enjoying the interaction with his fans, and there is plenty of that here. Interestingly, he momentarily loses his patience with one loud fan, though he later says that he was “just kidding”.

A fascinating release, featuring all three shows in surprisingly good audience recorded sound: in fact, these recordings are amongst the finest audience recorded shows out there. Everything can be heard clearly, including all of Elvis’ comments, and the well-balanced and crisp live sound on these recording will make you feel like you are right there in the showroom enjoying the King in person. These tapes were recently rediscovered, we believe that you will agree with us that this is a great find and a real must, and not just for the hardcore collector. Another quality Straight Arrow release!

May 19 - Bossa Nova Beer

A new Heineken television spot features a young man on a unique journey, set to the music of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Elvis Presley's "Bossa Nova Baby" sets the tone for a glimpse of a single man's journey to find a mysterious woman. The new ad is being broadcast in countries around the world and Elvis fans can watch the complete online version on Graceland.com or by visiting Heineken.com.

Originally written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the song was recorded for Elvis' 1963 film "Fun in Acapulco." Recorded in RCA's Studio B in Nashville, the song reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Chart and #20 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart in 1963.

The spot's description states the following:
A single man embarks on a city adventure with only the missing cards of a mysteriously beautiful woman to guide him. Each card takes him deeper into the neon heart of the city but will his wild woman-hunt eventually lead to the girl of his dreams? Of course it will, but that doesn't mean it won't be a blast finding out how.

Elvis's contract with Colonel Parker to reach $25,000

Fans of Elvis will be all shook up to hear that the very first contract signed by the rock and roll star is to go under the hammer this week.

The agreement between Presley and his ruthless manager, Colonel Tom Parker, signed at Sun Records' studio in Memphis, Tennessee, came just before the singer rocketed to international superstardom.

It was also the beginning of a relationship between the two men that was to last until Presley's death, and which was heavily criticised when investigations into the star's estate began. The sale of the document is being handled by Julien's Auctions of Los Angeles, California, but the auction itself will be held at the Hard Rock Café in New York City on Saturday, May 17. It's estimated to reach anything up to $25,000.

Presley's career began in 1954 when he joined Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee, and recorded 24 songs.

Word started to spread throughout the industry of a talented young singer and in February 1955, Col Parker, who had already had some success in talent management since the late-1930s, made his approach. Presley initially agreed to let 'the Colonel', as he was known, organise some of his future bookings and promotions and gradually he became known as his 'special advisor.'

In November that year, Col Parker successfully persuaded RCA Victor to buy Presley's contract out from Sun Records for $40,000 - an almost unheard of sum in those days. Fatefully, it also guaranteed the Colonel a 25 per cent commission on the young star's gross income.

After Presley signed the official agreement his career went from strength to strength and it was with RCA Victor he released his most famous tracks, including Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, Blue Suede Shoes and All Shook Up. The document has survived the last 59 years in pristine condition - just slightly yellowing - and features signatures by Elvis and his parents Vernon and Gladys Presley.

May 10 - I Can't Help Alternate Love Letters

Two new import re-issues were released; "I Can Help 30 Anniversary" and "The Alternate Love Letters". Both albums come as digi-pack. The last is presented as "the perfect addition to your FTD album" and comes in a six panel digi-pack.

This year it’s 30 years ago that the compilation album ‘I Can Help And Other Great Hits" was released in the UK. It was one of the most succesfull Elvis albums of the early 1980’s. We are proud to present the entire album on CD for the first time, including some very hard to find bonus selections including the unreleased 12 inch version of I Can Help. Housed in a stunning 3 panel digipack (with unseen photo’s of Elvis from the mid 1970’s ) this is a real ‘must have’ for all Elvis CD and photo collectors.
