January 28 - A Killer Nite!

Coming out soon is new Straight Arrow CD titled "A Killer Nite", featuring the previously unreleased Las Vegas, August 26th, 1972 Dinner show.

From the press-release:
This recording is taken directly from a recently found original mastertape, as recorded by British super fan Rex Martin. This new source has never been in circulation. Of all the engagements that Elvis performed between 1969 and '76, there is no doubt that his Summer '72 season was one of his finest. Not only that, but he was also operating on a consistently strong level, which is something that you can't even say about the Summer '70 one, which had its fair share of poor shows near the end of the engagement. He was in total command of his art, he looked fantastic and he sang like a bird. Each concert from this engagement is recommended listening for the true Elvis scholar. As usual, our new release is presented in Straight Arrow's standard deluxe digipack, designed with a collection of photos of Elvis, taken during Elvis’ 1972 Las Vegas Summer Festival.

January 25 - Hilton Showroom Volume 1

The AudiRec import-label announced the release of "Hilton Showroom Volume 1" containing an audience recording of the complete and so far unreleased performance from December 8, 1975 – right in the middle of Elvis Presley's December Las Vegas 75 Season.

From the press-release:
AudiRec proudly presents: Elvis – Hilton Showroom Volume 1 – a brand new CD Set which will be released shortly. It includes an audience recording of the complete and so far unreleased performance from December 8, 1975 – right in the middle of Elvis´ December Las Vegas 75 Season.
AudiRec has by now quite an experience in focusing on the year of 1975. The reason for this is simple – we believe that when Elvis was on stage in 1975 he was almost always focused on the music, and it showed. So when Elvis returned to Las Vegas for the second to last time in December of 1975 he delivered mainly great shows. The one you hear on this release he seemed to be in excellent mood and enjoying himself on stage – actually just like at all the other shows from December 2 to December 15. The people in the Hilton Showroom on that very night loved his performance and from what we can hear on this cd plus several other audience- and soundboard-recordings, the Las Vegas Winter season of ´75 was a really good one.

Please be aware that this new release is limited to 300 copies only! Be sure to get your copy if you are interested. Once you have it in your hands, we hope your spare time will allow you to sit back, put your headphones on, flip through the accompanied 16-page booklet (including an extensive fan-review of the show written very shortly after the concert was over) and listen to the show from December 8, 1975. It´s Las Vegas! It´s the Hilton Hotel Showroom! It´s ELVIS! Enjoy!

January 19 - A Mess Of Blues

Just released for the first time on - import - CD is the vinyl compilation "Mess Of Blues".

From the press-release:
Elvis Presley has a rare distinction of being one of the most versatile singers of modern times. Unlike many other singers who essentially sing/sang songs in a small number of musical genres, Elvis was particularly versatile and prolific across more than 10 genres or musical styles, including the blues.

Surprisingly, given the wealth of great "Blues" material recorded by Elvis, and a propensity by BMG/RCA to release countless Elvis "greatest hits" and "love songs" compilations, the company has released very little by way of Elvis "blues" compiles. In fact, there have been more "licensed" Elvis blues albums released than official BMG/RCA releases.

In the late 1980’s a great blues compilation, called "Mess Of Blues" featured no more than 24 fantastic tracks that had a "blues" feel. It was released on the "Preview" UK label. As good as the double LP was, it was never released on CD. Until now!

This new CD release contains the same 24 tracks as the original album, but...  most of these tracks are now rare and alternate versions, all edited from studio chats, false starts etc. So all are unreleased in this form! A perfect collection for every Elvis fan!
CD comes in jewel-case with 4 page booklet, liner notes and blue sticker on front of jewel-case. As always, a limited edition so order your copy today!

Tracks:
01. Reconsider Baby (live 1969)
02. Trouble (mono mix master)

January 14 - Last Stint At The International

The Straight Arrow import-label announced the release "Last Stint At The International" containing  both August 29, 1971 shows.

    From the press-release:
Our previous release 'Solid As Rock' received a great deal of acclaim from the fans, who praised the quality of Elvis' performance as well as the good audio. Some even stated that we had 'undersold' this release, and that the sound-quality of the recording is better than what was stated in our publicity. We at Straight Arrow believe that self-praise is no praise at all; we prefer to let our product speak for itself, which is also why we have built up a loyal following over the years. We simply deliver the goods, no hype necessary.

The Straight Arrow team is always looking for rare, unknown or seemingly lost recordings. Once again, the labels researchers were successful - both August 29, 1971 shows are completely new, even for die-hard Elvis fans. They have never been in circulation - in any form! Unfortunately, the Aug. 29, 1971 M/S was not recorded in its entirety. The cassette recorder was stopped - perhaps accidentally - during „Love Me Tender“ and the last couple of songs are missing.

It is with pleasure that we can now offer you more recordings from 1971. This fine Las Vegas season is still poorly documented, so we know that many fans will be delighted with this release. Elvis delivers the goods with two no-nonsense shows, from an engagement that marks the end of an era.

From '69 until this point, Elvis had created so much magic with his shows at the International. Not long after this engagement, the International was sold to the Hilton group. The hotel was renamed, and, oddly enough, some of the magic that was synonymous with Elvis at the International disappeared. From this point onwards, his performances in Vegas became very much a case of 'hit and miss'. Let's go back and touch the past, put the CD in the player and let's enjoy one more dose of the original magic of Elvis at the International.

This release is presented in a de-luxe digipack, filled with rare images taken at the Las Vegas International hotel in August, 1971.

Tracks Sunday, August 29, 1971 Dinner Show:
    01. Orchestra Intro - 02. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 03. That’s All Right - 04. I Got A Woman / Amen - 05. Proud Mary - 06. Sweet Caroline - 07. Polk Salad Annie - 08. January 11 - Joe Moscheo Passed Away

Monday night at 10pm local time singer Joe Moscheo passed away. Joe Moscheo was a member of the gospel group The Imperials. The group sang with Elvis in the period 1969-1971.

Joe was a musician, songwriter, producer and writer (such as 'The Gospel Side of Elvis') and has been for more than 40 years in the business. During this period he worked with include Elvis Presley, Jimmy Dean, Roy Clark and Pat Boone, just to name a few. He received Grammy and Dove Awards.

Joe was officially incorporated into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame on October 29, 2007. The last year his health unfortunately fiercely backwards. And at the end of December 2015 he was hospitalized in Nashville and since then was in intensive care.

    Reactions:

“Joe Moscheo was a dear friend of ours and an immensely talented singer, musician and arranger for The Imperials. Elvis loved Joe, and treasured their performances together on stage in Las Vegas and in the studio. Elvis loved Gospel more than any other music genre, and Joe was a big part of many of Elvis’ greatest Gospel performances. After concerts, Elvis and Joe would often sing Gospel songs around a piano, long into the night, which are cherished memories for us. Our hearts go out to Joe’s family, friends and fans around the world. He will be deeply missed. ”  -- Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley

“Everyone at Graceland is deeply saddened by the passing of our good friend, Joe Moscheo. We were so fortunate to have Joe and The Imperials perform many times here at Graceland during Elvis Week and in acclaimed touring productions around the world celebrating Elvis’ legacy. Elvis fans loved Joe and greatly appreciated his incredible work with Elvis.  We will miss him tremendously.” -- Jack Soden, CEO, Elvis Presley Enterprises/Graceland

    January 09 - February 1974 Closing Show

The MxF importlabel announced the release of the new CD "February 1974 Closing Show" featuring the unreleased Vegas February 09, 1974 Closing Show.

    From the press-release:
After almost five months of rest, Elvis back to the Hilton in better shape and stronger respect the previous season. For this reason his performance is superb, still at the top if his ability he deliveries short shows, but very intense, there is a freshness that cannot be denied, Elvis was very energetic on stage, full of enthusiasm he sang with power and sensitivity, delivering a solid and heartfelt repertoire like the “new” songs “Spanish Eyes, Help me and Let Me Be There recent hit from Olivia Newton-John” and the classic “Trying to Get To You” sang terrifically. At the same time he still performs a great version of the classic rocker “Johnny B. Good” without forget two classic early 70’ songs like Polk Salad Annie and Sweet Caroline and as you can see from the track list the number of the classic oldies in the show are significant reduced. This season will be the first with the new agreement , Elvis signed two years of contract performed twice a year, but only two weeks at the time rather than the previous four.

The sound is very good for an audience recording, We have on our hands the original mono tape of extremely good quality enabling us to carry out a simple re-mastering work, concentrating on the reduction of noise trying to achieve a more clear sound balancing the channel and put at the right speed the tape. The result a pretty dynamic tape with a great definition of the background music.

As usually from this label, this new CD will come in a deluxe digipack, containing a collection of live photographs newspapers clip and memorabilia. We love this show, it is clear we are not talking about the rough rocker of early 69/71, the “NEW” songs added to the show are no properly Rockers!! but in spite of some limitations and an evolution of style to a more complete musical range the man is still at the top and Elvis at the top means an unforgettable experience for those who attended the show and for those of us prepared to listen. The sound is very good and in times of continue Soundboard re-release we are glad to give you the possibility to have a release that can combine the good audio quality with the unreleased status. We add as bonus for this first release a poster featuring a great live shot from Montgomery, March 06. The running-time of this CD is about 58.00 minutes.

    Texarkana Dedicates Elvis Presley Plaque

The "King of Rock'n' Roll" Elvis Presley would have turned 81 years old Friday, January 8th, 2016. Texarkana, Arkansas celebrated his birthday by dedicating a plaque in his honor at the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium 'Walk of Fame' next to city hall.

Dozens of people came out to honor him and reflect on their memories of the king. When this radio interview was recorded in 1955, Elvis Presley was just getting started. "He called me when he came to Texarkana. I didn't really know who he was really," said Bobbie Smith, Texarkana, Arkansas resident. Smith was just a teenager when she first met Elvis. She didn't even know he wanted to be a singer, but that didn't last long.

Elvis invited her to watch one of his first performances from the back stage of the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium. "He got on the stage and shook his leg. Everybody thought that was fun," recalled Smith.

Elvis performed in Texarkana in 1954 and 1955. LaFonda Clough of Texarkana, Arkansas is a lifetime Elvis fan. Her parents also attended one of the King's earlier performances.

"My dad bought my mom a picture and they stayed and got him to autograph her picture," explained Clough. "So, her picture is autographed on the back, "Yours till sun up. Elvis Presley." Like many fans still today, Smith can't help but tap along when she hears an Elvis classic played. "He had on a white suit and I could not believe it because he was always wearing blue jeans, what regular people wore back then," said Smith.

However, unlike most fans, Smith got a glimpse into the real Elvis. The shy boy who could make her laugh.  "He was a good ol' country boy. I don't think he changed all that much, but he probably did," said Smith.

Presley performed at the Texarkana venue six times, including two concerts with Johnny Cash, who also has a plaque on the Walk of Fame park.

    Elvis' Star revealed in Tupelo

The birthday of Elvis was celebrated at his birthplace site in Tupelo, Mississippi. Besides cutting the cake the Elvis Walk of Fame star was also revealed. The star will be placed in the new Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience project in Meridian, Mississippi, which will open her doors in 2017. The ceremony in which the star will be placed in Meridian is scheduled for January 19, 2016.

Details How RCA Brought Elvis To Europe:
This beautifully designed book contains unseen pictures and follows Elvis ascent from hottest act in The South via US stardom to becoming RCA Victor's spearhead as the company launched the RCA label worldwide in 1956. It goes on to show how Europe was completely won over by the early 1960's.

The earliest international Elvis records are listed, and there is a guide to identify Elvis records from all European countries, including a summary of the earliest releases from each country. There are complete illustrated discographies (including variants) for all Nordic countries: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. There is also a guide to first pressings of the 47 Elvis EP's released in Germany for sale in Northern Europe.

Elvis' reception in the Nordic countries is covered by a wealth of press cuttings, local film flyers and posters, ads, premiere dates, pictures and stories from handovers of Swedish and Norwegian record awards, and much previously unknown record company history. Among many revelations, the most surprising is perhaps how the Swedish company Electra engineered most of the Elvis activity taking place in Northern Europe.

Spliced in between are many amusing short stories, like when three Nordic Royal Princesses sought out Elvis on the set of G.I. Blues, or how the man behind RCA in Belgium started out smuggling records in the wings of his WW2 Royal Air Force Spitfire. Or the time Norway's bestselling crooner met Elvis in RCA Studios on the day Hound Dog was recorded.

The story behind German Teldec's earliest Elvis releases is completely rewritten along the way, and for record collectors there are many new discoveries – like why do records from some countries come with push-out centers while others have large center holes. Or how can it be that up to three different label variants may occur within the same print run. Or why were Europe's earliest 45-singles sold in Sweden only and why did Denmark and Norway, each with tiny populations, issue respectively 46 and 56 different Elvis records?

And did Elvis really pose a threat to communist Eastern Europe when he served as a US Soldier in West Germany? Boy, he sure did. All these topics and plenty more are covered in How RCA Brought Elvis to Europe. And not to be forgotten: free with the book's first edition comes an unreleased 1956 vinyl EP.

The book is written by Norwegians Sigbjørn Stabursvik and Hans Otto Engvold, supported by a network of experts from fourteen countries. Stabursvik knows things about records that most people don't, while Engvold is a hound for detail in all things Elvis. Together they bring new insights on practically every page of this excellent book.

1.000.000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong

The special album 'If I Can Dream' which was released late October 2015 and is a mix of Elvis with brand new arrangements of the orchestra. It includes a duet with Michael Bublé and contributions from Il Volo and Duane Eddy. The albums has now reached the cape of one million units sold in the UK.

    Pat Harrington Died

Pat Harrington, the popular comedian and voice-over talent who made a lasting impact as superintendent Dwayne Schneider on the hit sitcom "One Day at a Time," has died, according to his agent. Harrington was 86. In 1967, he appeared in the Elvis Presley film “Easy Come, Easy Go” as “Judd Whitman”.

    UK RCA Demos

Alan White almost finished his "Illustrated Guide To Elvis Presley's UK RCA Demos", exclusively available at the Elvis shop in London.
