September 24 - Indian Elvis?

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Rock 'n' Roll legend Elvis Presley after attending the recent 'Howdy, Modi!' event in Houston where the Indian leader received much support by the community present.

Owing to the rousing welcome the two leaders received at the Houston event and the popularity that PM Modi enjoys, Trump said, "They love this gentleman to my right. People went crazy, he is like an American version of Elvis."

However, Trump seemed like wanting to say that Modi was like an "Indian version" of Elvis.

September 19 - New Elvis Presley Footage

The U.S. based Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) aired episode four of Ken Burns movie “Country Music”. Episode 4, “I Can't Stop Loving You” covering the years 1953-1963, pays a visit to Memphis, Tenn., during the age of rockabilly with Sun Studios artists Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley; Ray Charles crosses over racial borders by recording a country album; Patsy Cline rises to stardom with a smooth new sound.

Episode four featured previously unseen home movie footage which shows Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash together back in 1957. The clip shows Elvis Presley dancing, possibly to “Treat Me Nice” from “Jailhouse Rock”. A Canada Packers sign in the background while Johnny Cash is on the street would suggest that section is filmed in Canada.

The first shot is Elvis is chewing gum and dancing - a finger from an unseen man snaps along with his dancing (probably Johnny, based on what comes in a moment). Then we get a second shot of Elvis dancing alone. A third shot, a few frames of Elvis with Johnny's pompadour ducking into the left edge of the shot.  Fourth and fifth shots that appear to be from the same reel are of Johnny walking a street and in the back seat of a car, respectively.
Then we get the real gem, of Johnny and Elvis standing together around a table, with both looking pensive, Cash leaning on the table and looking at the camera.  This fades into a shot of Elvis and Johnny closer to the window, Elvis stretching his arms to the back of his head, and Johnny now standing up. And finally, one last almost voyeuristic shot of them standing still, looking out the window.

Barron Hilton Died

Hotelier and philanthropist Barron Hilton died on Thursday of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, his family's Conrad Hilton Foundation confirmed in a press release. He was 91.

Elvis Presley had an 8 year exclusive run at the Hilton, entertaining some 2.5 million people, making him the city's all time most successful performer. Over time BaronHlton and Elvis Presley became friends. In 1978 hotelier Barron Hilton unveiled the Elvis statue which still stands in the hotel.

In August 1969, Kirk Kerkorian's International Hotel was the largest resort in the world and cost $80 million to complete. Alex Soofey who was working for Kerkorian was given the job of putting The International Hotel on the map. He decided that Elvis Presley was the one act that would do this and after a meeting with Colonel Tom Parker an initial booking was made.

After working on rehearsals, Elvis opened in the International Showroom on July 31, 1969. Booked for a four-week engagement the reviews were ecstatic with Elvis breaking all attendance records for the city. Five months later Elvis returned to the International and broke his own attendance records, starting a series of twice yearly engagements that would continue until 1976.

Following his opening performance, Colonel Parker and hotel manager Alex Shoofey signed a contract scribbled on a restaurant tablecloth which, despite receiving many attractive offers from other Vegas resorts, Elvis dutifully honoured.

In 1970, the Hilton Hotel group purchased the International Hotel, along with Kerkorian's other property, the Flamingo. When International president Alex Shoofey met Barron Hilton the International's new owner, in 1972, he is reported to have said "Colonel Parker -- minus Elvis Presley -- is the best customer you ever had at this hotel. He's good for at least one million dollars a year."

It was Baron Hilton who presented Elvis with a 14 karat solid gold bolo-style rope chain necklace as a gift - shown above- for the incredible success of Elvis' residencies at The Hilton. The elongated, hexagonal-shaped bolo-style clasp is stylized bamboo shapes, with elaborate script initials “EP” on the cross bar.

September 14 - Worldwide Elvis RCA Vinyl Book Series

Paul Dowling is working on a RCA discography book series. He reached out to fans and collectors of rare vinyl and while doing so he shared a little more insight in this project. It is his intention to publish a series of “Worldwide Elvis RCA Vinyl” books, the first volume is due in 2020. The books should contain a complete discography of each country - 78's, singles, EPs, LPs and promos - while the main section should  detail every known label variation, reissue with pictures of labels, covers, etcetera. The size of the book is 9.5 x 12 inch.

From his post:
As a lot of you know I have been collecting Elvis Presley vinyl from around the world since 1973 and currently am working on doing a series of Worldwide Elvis Rca Vinyl Discography books. These will have as much information as I can possibly find on his RCA vinyl from close to 64 countries and I could really use your help.

In the mid 1990's I started to do this project which includes every 78, single, EP, LP, promos from over 60 countries - RCA only!! It was a lot of work then because, since 1974, I have been selling Elvis Presley vinyl from around the world to people all over the world...and I'm still doing this as most of you know. I spent maybe a year working on the book them then but I had to put it on hold until now because it was just too much to concentrate on full time. But I never stopped collecting information - scans, information, etc. and I now have a lot more free time on my hands and a year ago I decided to go back to finishing this. I even went up to BMG in New York in 1992 every other week for 6 months and came back with over 3000 photocopies of listing notices, production cards, etc. that hardly anyone has seen. Most of it is on U.S. releases but there is some from other countries.

Some of my original ideas I started with in the 90's I still like. For example:
  • There will be a complete discography at the beginning of each country - 78's, singles, EP's, LP's, promos.
  • The original book was to be 8 x 10 but this one will be 9 .5 x 12.
  • The main section will detail every known label variation, reissue with pictures of labels, covers, etc
It's always something I've wanted to do and last October I decided to go back to it and I do so around 10 hours every day. So far I have over 50,000 scans of labels, covers etc. from all over the world plus information on releases from over 64 countries

I am posting this here in hopes that many you can help me with scans. If anyone could help me with good quality scans of the releases I have listed below I would really appreciate. You can e mail me at paul@worldwideelvis.com I can use any of the 78's, singles, EP's, LP's listed below in good quality. A good portion of these I already have but need better quality scans. The list I am adding now is just the latest I need but trust me there will be loads more!!

September 13 - Elvis 100 At The Movies

Sony Netherlands released the "De Elvis 100" compilation featuring hits that charted in The Netherlands. This album comes with a booklet describing the link between Elvis and The Netherlands.

The set contains 100 hits in chronological order, from “Heartbreak Hotel” to the JXL remix of "A Little Less Conversation". It is the first European release to include the 1982 "The Elvis Medley", it also includes the Christmas hits as well as special live, rehearsal and studio recordings.
This box was composed using the masters in the very best sound quality, the mastering was done by Vic Anesini. The booklet contains an extensive story about Elvis and his link with The Netherlands.

The record company made some alternate choices for several tracks on this Dutch single compilation. They used the 1972 Madison Square Garden (Complete Masters Box) version of "Suspicious Minds" instead of the live single version from August 1970, as released in 2001. "I’m Yours" is not the single version but the album version with spoken part. "Until It’s Time For You To Go" is also from the Madison Square Garden concert. "My Way" is taken from the Aloha Special, instead of the 1977 single version. "I Really Don't Want To Know" has been lifted from "Elvis Country", it has the part of ''I Was Born About 10,000 Years Ago'' segment still intact. "I've Lost You" is the studio version taken from the Album Collection (better stereo mix than on previous releases since it was remixed for that set), the same goes for "Blue River".

Elvis Presley - At The Movies

The New Continent label released the 3 CD set "Elvis Presley - At The Movies: 1956-62 Film Soundtrack Collection" featuring 85 tracks from Elvis Presley's first five film-soundtrack LPs in their entireties: "Loving You", "King Creole", "G.I. Blues", "Blue Hawaii", "Girls! Girls! Girls!", as well as 4 EPs which contain Elvis’ performances for other motion pictures from the same period – the celebrated "Love Me Tender", "Jailhouse Rock", "Follow that Dream" and "Kid Galahad".

In addition, this remastered collector’s edition features 5 extra film tunes. It also contains a comprehensive booklet presenting the discographic information for the sensational music heard on this compilation  plus rare photos and memorabilia."

September 12 - The Danish Singles Collection

Due for release from the Memphis Mansion in Randers (Denmark) is the LP “ELVIS: The Danish Singles Collection Vol.1”. This album comes on red vinyl with a booklet.

From the press-release
The idea behind the release was to have a discography that was a little different, and the Danish singles were certainly that. There's a whole generation of fans that have grown up never hearing the original vinyl sound of Elvis, so these are how the tunes sounded when first released, complete with compression, and some of them really rock! As good as our modern releases are we've kind of lost a little bit of history, and we wanted to put that back. What we present here is that original vinyl sound, first heard when these tracks were originally released. This release is limited to 300 copies, the mastering was done by Tony Stuchbury.

Side A: Wear My Ring Around Your Neck - Doncha’ Think It’s Time - I Want To Be Free - Baby I Don’t Care - Hard Headed Woman - Don’t Ask Me Why

Side B: Love Me Tender - Any Way You Want Me - Tutti Frutti - I Want You I Need You I Love You - One Night - I Got Stung
