Getting to Know Elvis

Richard Rossini published the 153-page book 'Getting to Know Elvis' and a 160-page Portugese edition titled 'Conhecendo Elvis'.

Publicity stated
: Elvis Presley was not what we call a normal man. He is one of those rare individuals whose lives have been transformed into legend. However, public knowledge about Elvis's life is much more based on the stereotype crafted around him than on the true understanding of his story.

What everyone thinks they know about Elvis is this: he was born in a small town, recorded a record for his mother Gladys, was discovered by a small record label, and became the king of rock. After a period of glory, drugs, overwork, and personal issues eventually led to his melancholic death, unworthy of all the success he achieved. This is what laypeople think they know about Elvis, but in reality, it's a distorted story of the life of a special man.

In this book, we aim to introduce the life and career of Elvis to a new generation of young people who currently lack idols with a strong impact on society. Nowadays, singers and bands are disposable, emerging and disappearing in the blink of an eye without leaving any mark on the world. Getting to know Elvis will ignite your curiosity and passion for the legend of the King of Rock and Roll.

January 25 - Elvis The Biography

Plexus re-issued the Revised Edition of
Jerry Hopkins' 360-page 'Elvis: The Biography' as a paperback edition. This edition, which includes 60 photos, was last re-issued in 2022.

Description: Elvis Presley is the biggest single entertainment personality in the history of American popular culture. Nearly thirty years after his death he remains the undisputed King of Rock and Roll. Known the world over by his first name alone, he is the foremost iconic figure in popular music.

Featuring a wealth of firsthand interviews, Elvis: A Biography combines Jerry Hopkins two previous classic bestselling Elvis biographies with all-new material to give the definitive detailed account of Presley s fantastic life.

Priscilla, Elvis I Ja

Due for release on February 14, 2024 from Znak is 'Priscilla. Elvis I Ja', the Polish edition of 'Elvis and Me' by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon.

Publicity stated
I invite you to read the book Priscilla. 'Elvis and Me' (release February 14) by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon and to cinemas to see the film Priscilla (release February 9). Based on the book, it was directed by Sofia Coppola and starred Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi.

Look at Presley through Priscilla's eyes. In a painfully honest book, Priscilla Presley reveals the secrets of her relationship with the king of Rock and Roll. She met him when she was fourteen. He was already the king of the stage and one of the most listened to musicians in the world. The teenage fan quickly lost her mind for him. How will we assess their relationship from today's perspective?

'Priscilla, Elvis and Me' is a gripping, detailed story of a woman who experiences her first, and perhaps greatest, love. What is it like to love a sex icon and live in a world of glamor where everything is at your fingertips?

History and countless fans remember Elvis' impeccable image, cheerful character and innate go-getter. Is it possible that the idol of thousands could turn into an explosive, offensive, self-important egomaniac in an instant?

January 24 - Stand Up Releases with Elvis and Randy Starr

The Reel Trax import record label announced the release of 'Elvis '68 Unleashed' on classic red and transparent red colored vinyl.

Publicity stated: Reel Trax is back with its first release on vinyl! After the great success of our recent CD release from December 2023 which has been inspired by the celebration of the 55 the Anniversary of Elvis' legendary NBC-TV Special (aired December 3, 1968) we decided to release the soundtrack of the CD - now carefully remastered for vinyl - on a stunning looking 12-inch 2-LP set and for even better sound results to be played at 45 RPM!

Vinyl collectors are well aware that two RPMs are widely available now: 33 ⅓ and 45 revolutions per minute. 45 RPM records have better sound quality than 33 ⅓ RPM records do. This is because they offer more space for deeper grooves for the turntable's needle to read so it can express the more complex and nuanced sound patterns with a better listening experience as a result.

Step back in time and relive the extraordinary talent of Elvis Presley. 'Elvis Unleashed '68' pays tribute to a musical icon who lives on forever in the hearts of millions of fans around the world. We revisit the probably most vibrant scenery of the so-called '68 Comeback.

Reel Trax is bringing back the magic with a brandnew 2-LP release. Carefully curated and remastered in great-sounding Stereo in a highly valued professional studio in Europe, the legendary Stand Up shows are coming to new life. The sensational looking double album complete with liner notes from those who were there in 1968 (and written especially for this release!) is a real eye-catcher and informative as well. This album captures the raw and unrestrained energy of Elvis Presley like never before. It transports you directly to the iconic standup shows of The King, recorded in June 1968.

After a period of absence from the stage, Elvis made a triumphant return to the spotlight with a short series of unforgettable concerts before a close audience. Meant to be shown in parts in the then upcoming TV-Special simply called 'ELVIS' it was a sensational appearance in its own. In general it was a time when he rediscovered his musical roots while filming the special and he delivered his art with pure passion.

With an impressive collection of timeless classics, breathtaking vocal performances, and spontaneous interactions with the audience, 'Elvis Unleashed '68' reveals the true essence of a legendary artist at the peak of his power.

Randy Starr: Presley Style

The Bear Family record label announced the release of the CD 'Randy Starr: Presley Style - Lost Elvis Songwriter Demos Vol. 1'.

Publicity stated: After the great success of P.J.'s CD album Proby with demo recordings, Bear Family Records releases further, lavishly produced demos recorded exclusively for Elvis.

Between 1963 and 1968, Randy Starr wrote and produced approximately 70 songs in New York City, 35 of which are included on this CD, songs of which Elvis selected and recorded six for the soundtracks of his feature films!

The illustrated and extensive booklet contains detailed liner notes by British Elvis expert and collector Trevor Simpson, based on interviews he recently conducted with Randy Starr.

Randy Starr, born in 1930, successfully completed his dental training at Columbia College in 1954. At the same time, he wrote songs that were recorded by Jackie Wilson, Connie Francis, the Kingston Trio and Kay Starr, among others. In 1957 he appeared for the first time on the American Bandstand with his hit After School, and in 1959 he entered the Billboard charts with The Enchanted Sea as the singer of the Islanders, reaching position 15.

However, his greatest success as a songwriter came with a total of 12 compositions personally selected by Elvis Presley, which became part of the soundtracks of Elvis films. In order to give Elvis an accurate picture of the songs, Randy Starr produced highly professional recordings between 1963 and 1968 in top studios in New York with hand-picked musicians and often himself as the singer.

On two CD albums, Bear Family released around 70 of the recordings, 12 of which Elvis took over. This first of two CDs contains 35 songs, including six that can be heard in the Elvis version in feature films: Kissin' Cousins ('Kissin' Cousins'), The Yellow Rose Of Texas ('Viva Las Vegas'), Look Out, Broadway ('Frankie And Johnny'), Datin' ('Paradise, Hawaiian Style'), Adam And Evil ('Spinout'), and The Girl I Never Loved ('Clambake'). Only one of these demo recordings has been released before, 34 of these songs are now appearing on a recording medium for the first time! In order to achieve the high sound quality that is typical of Bear Family Records, we commissioned an experienced sound engineer to master the original sources. The result sounds excellent!

Of the 35 demo songs on this album, Randy Starr sang 14, 13 times the singer is called Kenny Karen, on the remaining recordings either Malcom Dodds or Jerry Keller, the same Jerry Keller who sang in 1959 with the legendary Here Comes Summer, sings Made it to number 14 on the Billboard charts.

The British Elvis collector and expert Trevor Simpson maintained close contact with Randy Starr for years. We owe him the extremely competent liner notes, which are based on many interviews conducted with Randy Starr.
Unfortunately, Trevor passed away in January 2024 and was unable to see the release of these two albums. We dedicate the Randy Starr CDs to this extraordinary person and expert.

Tracks: Kissin Cousins (Malcolm Dodds) - Viva Las Vegas (Malcolm Dodds) - The Yellow Rose Of Texas (Randy Starr) - Lady Luck Is A Gypsy (Malcolm Dodds) - Look Out, Broadway (Malcolm Dodds) - Kissing In The Rain (Kenny Karen) - Three Wishes (Randy Starr) - Bring On The Dancing Girls (Randy Starr) - A Thousand And One Night (Malcolm Dodds) - Polynesian Paradise (Jerry Keller) - Datin' (Jerry Keller) - Adam And Evil (Kenny Karen) - Never Say Forever (Kenny Karen) - Easy Come, Easy Go (Kenny Karen) - Wheel Of Love (Kenny Karen) - I'll Take Love (Randy Starr) - Love On The Rocks (Kenny Karen) - Clambake (Randy Starr) - he Girl I Never Loved (Kenny Karen) - Let Her Go (Randy Starr) - You Can Do It (Randy Starr) - Handle With Care (Randy Starr) - Better And Better (Randy Starr) - From Riches To Rags (Kenny Karen) - Little Girl (Kenny Karen) - Big Bright, Beautiful World (Randy Starr) - Head For The Hills (Randy Starr) - Strange Vibrations (Randy Starr) - Come Hell, Come Sundown (Kenny Karen) - Charro! (Randy Starr) - The Chautauqua (Kenny Karen) - We Can See Him Everywhere (Kenny Karen & Mimi Roman) - Don't Stand Under The Mistletoe (Randy Starr) - My Christmas Won't Be Merry This Year (Kenny Karen and Mimi Roman) - Let's Have A Christmas Party (Kenny Karen and Mimi Roman).

January 23 - The King In Motown City (Updated)

Set for release from the E.P. Collector import record label is a new CD titled 'The King In Motown City featuring the April 22, 1977 performance as recordex from the audience in Detroit.

Publicity stated: The E.P. Collector Label is back this Year with another unique release of Elvis show in Detroit, April 23, 1977. The CD is titled The King In Motown City.

Yes, it was the very last show that Elvis played in Detroit, primarily known as the center of the automobile industry, where three major car manufacturers operate - Ford, Chrysler and General Motors, hence the nickname Motown ("motor city").

The April 22nd, 1977 concert was previously released in 2006 on the extremely poor sounding CD 'The King Has Landed', (actually one of worst sounding Elvis CDs ever) with several tracks being incomplete. This show was never available in solid, listenable sound - until now! So throw your old CD into garbage can and enjoy 'The King In Motown City!'

The new tape was obtained from an American fan and has been carefully restored and mastered in January 2024, with a focus on preserving the integrity of the original recording. Hence, some minor hiss may be present; we felt it more important to keep the high frequencies and natural ambience of the original recording for historic reasons. The sound is very good for an off line recording - ask your CD dealer for audio samples! As usual the CD is packaged in a nicely designed digipack with local press review. All images used for the artwork were taken during April 1977 tour including real Detroit photos.

Tracks: Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001 Theme) - C. C. Rider - I Got A Woman / Amen - Thats All Right - Are You Lonesome Tonight? - Blue Christmas - Love Me - If You Love Me (Let Me Know) - Jailhouse Rock - O Sole Mio (Sherrill Nielsen) / Its Now Or Never - Little Sister - (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear / Dont Be Cruel - Fever - My Way - Band Introductions - Early Morning Rain (John Wilkinson) - Whatd I Say - Johnny B Goode - Drum Solo (Ronnie Tutt) - Bass Solo (Jerry Scheff ) - Piano Solo (Tony Brown) - School Day - Hurt (With Reprise) - Hound Dog - Cant Help Falling In Love - Closing Vamp / Announcements.

January 16 - The King and the Jester

Paul Belard, known for his day-by-day series of Elvis photobooks, is finishing work on his latest special interest book
The King and the Jesterwhich will be heading to the printer very soon. The front and back cover images have been released.

The cover notes: "Tom Parker was an Army deserter who was discharged as a psychopath, a fact that Parker’s apologists conveniently omit or make too little of it; once a psychopath, always a psychopath. He was also an illegal alien, a liar who claimed to be born in West Virginia, a deceitful individual who cheated his partner Hank Snow, and an addicted gambler.

He could furthermore be described as a bully, a manipulative, uncaring and narcissistic individual who could also turn on the charm at will, all psychopathic traits.

Parker was a hard worker, a gifted promoter, at times a skillful negotiator, and a keen judge of character. Intuitive and astute as he was, it did not take him long to recognize Elvis’ potential for easy money. As this uncultured philistine said of himself, “I did not know what to make of Elvis, or his music. I did not care, but I saw the reaction of the audiences and it was enough for me.” He promptly realized that Elvis was his own ticket to wealth. In addition, he soon realized that the naïve young man and his unsophisticated father would be no match for his dubious ploys.

Parker’s style of management was first and foremost self-serving. It squandered a large portion of Elvis’ talent and left an even larger share untapped. Because of Parker’s indifference to his charge’s genius, we only saw and heard the tip of the iceberg of Elvis’ God-given gift.

“It takes either a blind person or a villain to be that close to the most talented entertainer in the 20th century and absolutely miss it.” Dave Marsh, American music critic.

The Elvis information Network noted: "The book is a very strong read and one that is very much the "counterpoint" to the recently published "rose colored glasses" account, 'Elvis and the Colonel: An Insider's Look At The Most Legendary Partnership In Show Business'c by Greg McDonald and Marshall Terrill." More details soon.
