May 31 - A Boy From Tupelo

Due from RCA Legacy on July 28, 2017 is the 3 CD set ’A Boy from Tupelo’. Due one day later from the same label is the vinyl album ’A Boy from Tupelo: the Sun Masters’.

Due from the Not Now Music label on June 16, 2017 are two new 3 CD sets; 'Elvis in the 50's' and 'Elvis in the 60's'.

Product Description 50's box:

There's a reason they called Elvis Presley the King. It wasn't just the swagger in his hips, the suggestive onstage dancing, or the sly smile that set female hearts and loins alight wherever he went. As this 3CD set, drawn from his 1950s recordings proves, Elvis' voice was nothing less than sensational - warm and humorous, pleading and teasing and full of promise. Elvis could cajole or roar as the occasion demanded. He was capable of interpreting a lyric in a way that made it hard to imagine anybody else covering that song. And he sang this mixture of blues and country and soul - this new thing they were starting to call rock'n'roll.

Product Description 60's box:
Hard to believe now, but when Elvis Presley was conscripted into the US Army in 1958, the King of Rock & Roll was convinced his career was over! Elvis was certain his teenage fans wouldn t wait for two whole years, and believed that his crown would be stolen by a singer he admired hugely - Roy Orbison. But, as we now know, Elvis returned to the real world in triumph in 1960, as this fascinating 3CD package drawn from his early 1960s recordings vividly demonstrates.

Sold!

The private jet once owned by Elvis sold for an incredible $430,000 at a California auction on Saturday. The 1962 Lockheed Jetstar has sat on a runway in Roswell, New Mexico for 35 years and has no engines and an unrestored cockpit. The person who bought it and the buyer's plans for the plane have not been released, however it did not sell for the hoped-for US $2 > 3 million!. (EIN wonders how as we would like to see photos of Elvis in the actual plane to make it worth visiting!)

The 1962 red Lockheed JetStarOne which Elvis purchased in July 1976 (via a trade-in on his previous investment in a Dessault-Falcon airplane) eventually became the center of a long drawn-out FBI investigation "Operation Fountain Pen" where Elvis and Vernon were swindelled in an aircraft refurbishment deal. Despite the auctions' suggestion that the cool-looking red velvet interior was designed for Elvis, the previous owner has stated that this is not the case.
Though it is unclear where the buyer of the jet lives, the plane will have to be disassembled to be shipped.

Untouched since Elvis owned it, the jet is the only plane once owned by the legendary singer that is privately owned. Two other Elvis owned planes, including the Lisa Marie, are already displayed at Graceland in Memphis.

May 25 - Sonny West Died

Sonny West has died. He was Elvis Presley's former bodyguard and one of the authors of "Elvis, What Happend?". It was last year that Sonny West was confirmed to have stage 4 lung cancer - although he had been battling with serious medical issues over the last 5 years. In a twist of bad luck Sonny’s wife Judy was also suffering with breast cancer.

Sonny was a member of Elvis Presley's entourage and met him for the first time in 1958 before Elvis left for his military service in Germany. Later he came to work for Elvis, and he was responsible for the fleet, and bodyguard. He even lived for a time at Graceland. The man had supporting roles in films such as 'Kid Galahad' and 'Stay Away, Joe'. Sonny was with Elvis (and Jerry Schilling) on December 21, 1970, when Elvis met with President Richard Nixon. Sonny West worked a long time for Elvis, but was fired in 1976. He was one of the authors of the controversial book 'Elvis, What Happened'.

May 22 - On Fire In Florida

The Straight Arrow import-release announced the double CD release "On Fire In Florida" dedicated to Elvis' February ’77 tour.

From the press-release:
The Hollywood, February 12th, 1977 show was first released in 1994, 23 years have passed since then and now is the right time for a proper re-release. May 17 - Elvis On Bootleg Record

The AudiRec import-label announced the release of volume 7 in the "Elvis - Hilton Showroom" series. This volume is due at the end of May 2017.

From the press-release:

Welcome to Volume 7 of our AudiRec “Las Vegas Series” which concentrates on Elvis´ concerts in Sin City. This time we have chosen to release the Dinner Show from February 17, 1972 and it is the first time that this show is available on a “real” CD. Since there aren´t too many “listenable” recordings from this Las Vegas season made by fans who were there in the audience, bringing their own, non-professional recording equipment, it is more than likely good to have another one that is pretty good in sound!

In his 6th Hilton appearance Elvis received quite some rave reviews, especially in comparison to some critics and fans comments which did not sound too enthusiastic when talking about the “King´s” August 71 engagement in Las Vegas. Elvis did a total of 57 shows, starting on January 26 and ending on February 23. RCA was there to do some live recording and because of that and some other reasons Elvis changed his setlist significantly to the benefit of some “big” and “dramatic” ballads.

“Variety” told his readers on February 9, 1972 about Elvis in Vegas: “This time out is the best one yet for Presley. His format is taut, he pays attention to his songs and audience, the karate exercises are quite vigorous and his ringside kissing technique is like a dozen midway attractions rolled into one. He has almost ceased the pelvic sex symbolism, retaining a wee bit of the guitar’s phallic thrust near the top of his vocalistics … Wearing a white cape, orange scarf and white jumpsuit studded with brass buttons and open nearly to his mid-section, he comes on ready and belting strong. Par for his course is about 20 tunes, big, bigger, biggest, either in his own or the general pop catalog. If he keeps up his opening pace there will be no need for repeat of grumbles, heard at the close of his August 1971 month, that Presley was sliding by, generally goofing off and otherwise acting bored with the whole thing.”

Please be aware that this new release is limited to 300 copies only! Be sure to get your copy if you are interested. Once you have it in your hands, we hope your spare time will allow you to sit back, put your headphones on, flip through the accompanied 16-page booklet and listen to the Dinner Show from February 17, 1972. It´s Las Vegas! It´s the Hilton Hotel Showroom! It´s Elvis! Enjoy!

May 15 - Highest Dead Earners Announced

When a person is catapulted to stratospheric celebrity status during their lifetime, not even death can halt their earning potential and ability to draw in revenue. On top of this, there are some whose demise has actually boosted their income with posthumous commemoration coming from all quarters.
Elvis Presley is listed at #3 on the highest earning dead celebrities over the last 12 months.

The Top 5:
1 - Michael Jackson – $825 million
2 - Charles Schulz –  $48 million
3 - Elvis Presley - £27 million
4 - Bob Marley – $21 million
5 - David Bowie - £10.5 million

Far from diminishing over time, Elvis Presley’s potency as an artist and his uncanny ability to sell records since his death almost 40 years ago has remained a constant. This has led to $27 million of earnings for his estate in the last 12 months or so.

Presley’s latest albums, 'If I Can Dream' and the follow-up, 'The Wonder Of You', are a collection of orchestral reworkings of some of his greatest hits. Released toward the end of 2015 and 2016, this body of work spent time at the top of the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom and sold more than 2 million copies in the U.K. alone - most of these being physical rather than digital. Combined with the sales of his other albums, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll amassed a huge amount of revenue in 2016.

Elvis has clearly mastered the art of staying relevant even in the world of digital sales and music streaming sites and has even enjoyed success in other ventures, as shown by the popular Elvis slot at CasinoEuro.
