May 22 - Memphis Hotel Will Get It

A new 450 room hotel and convention center came one step closer to opening at Elvis Presley’s Graceland on Wednesday. The Economic Development Board approved $84 million in financing to fund the development.

Graceland, the third most visited home in the U.S. behind the Whitehouse and Biltmore, said upgrading the experience for visitors with a new more modern hotel would generate jobs and boost the economy of Whitehaven.

“We are really excited to get going on this project. Piece by piece it’s taken a lot of organization and ecetera,” said Jack Soden, Elvis Presley Enterprises.

EDGE, the Economic Development Growth Engine, said it approved issuing Graceland $84 million in bonds to help pay for a new hotel. Financing would also come from a tourist development zone set up by city and county and from a tourist surcharge. “The money really comes from a private financial institution which will buy those bonds and therefore inject the money into the project,” said Reid Dulberger, EDGE Pres/CEO.

Even if the project failed the lawyer for Elvis Presley Enterprises told EDGE, taxpayers won’t be responsible for repaying bonds. “There’s not going to be a check written by the city or county to pay the debt so it is merely being paid from incentive revenues, from the revenues created by the hotel:13 and from Guarantees of the owners of the hotel,” said Attorney James McLaren, Elvis Presley Enterprises.

With its 450 rooms, 500 seat theater and two restaurants, the Graceland hotel will be the third largest in the city behind the Peabody and Convention Center Sheraton. In addition, 500 jobs were promised in and around the hotel.

“It’s going to be exactly where we want it in Whitehaven at Graceland where our visitors from all over the world will come and stay longer and spend more of their money and time in Whitehaven,” said Soden. One of the questions board members asked is how much will these jobs pay and who would get them. A representative for EP Enterprises said the average salary would be about $11 an hour and most of its employees traditionally come from the Whitehaven neighborhood.

May 15 - Birth of Rock And Roll And Dead Of the Blues

The book "Elvis and The Birth of Rock and Roll" will be released in June. In 1956, professional photographer Wertheimer took nearly 3.000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom.

Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimer's Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history. Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll collects Wertheimer's most remarkable Elvis shots from that magical year, along with a selection of his historic 1958 pictures of the star being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Nearly half of the photographs in this book have never been published before.
Each chapter is illustrated with a poster by Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest letterpress print shops in America, which created many early Elvis posters in the fifties.

From the publisher:
“Elvis who?” was photographer Alfred Wertheimer’s response when, in early 1956, an RCA Victor publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was—as we now know—about to become a legend.

Trailing Presley like a shadow, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimer's Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history.

Now available as a TASCHEN standard edition, Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll collects Wertheimer’s most remarkable Elvis shots from that magical year, along with a selection of his historic 1958 pictures of the star being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Each chapter is illustrated with a poster by Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest letterpress print shops in America, which created many early Elvis posters in the 1950s. The photographer:
Alfred Wertheimer (1929-2014) was born in Germany, emigrated to America and settled in Brooklyn as a young boy. Wertheimer’s photographs, which first gained national attention after Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977, capture the metamorphosis of pop music and the cultural transformation of America.

The editor:
Chris Murray has organized over 200 exhibitions of many of the leading artists of our time, from Andy Warhol in the 1970s to Annie Leibovitz’s first exhibition in 1984. He is co-curator of the Smithsonian Institution's exhibition Elvis at 21 and is the author or editor of over a dozen books.

The contributing author:

Robert Santelli is the executive director of the Grammy Museum and former CEO/artistic director of the Experience Music Project. He is the author of nearly a dozen books and a contributor to magazines such as Rolling Stone.

Blues legend BB King passes away at 89

Legendary Blues singer and guitarist BB King has died aged 89. King died in his sleep in Las Vegas, his lawyer said. The star had recently returned home from hospital where he was being treated for dehydration, which was linked to his Type II diabetes. It comes just a week after he insisted he was well again after falling ill.

The 89-year-old musician was taken to the facility near his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, due to health concerns although his daughter Claudette King soon admitted he was already feeling "much better" when asked about his condition last Monday. On the picture Elvis and BB King in Memphis on December 7,1956. BB King who was born Riley B. King and is often referred to as the King of Blues.

May 10 - No More Feedbacks !

The Rock legends importlabel announced the re-release of "No More Feedbacks!" containing the June 3, 1976 performance as recorded in Fort Worth, TX. The total time is 70:18 minutes.

From the press-release:
This concert was released nine (9) years ago as a double CD set titled '' The Elvis Presley Show - Holding Down The Fort '' and featured part of the opening acts on the first CD. The original tape had some damages and omissions, and therefore the show was made complete while using the same songs performed a month later at the same venue. It was well edited and runs as a complete show. It isn't most popular period for Elvis' concert but the two shows recorded in Fort Worth, TX turned out to be rather good at the time. The sound engineer Bruce Jackson was on a lucky and bad day altogether, but Elvis' mood turned the situation into a good one for his best sounding man on tour.

This concert has been unavailable for many years now and no doubts some younger fans, or others who missed it would like to have this now into their collection. It will be a very limited edition and here's your chance to get a copy!

The Straight Arrow import-label announced the release of the double CD set "Ol' Snake Hips Is In Town" from the Rick Rennie master tapes vol. 5, containing the Fridau August 21, 1971 Dinner and midnight show peformances as recorded from the audience at the Las vegas International Hotel.

Press release from „The Rick Rennie master tapes“ Vol. 5:
Friday, August 21st, 1970 Dinner & Midnight Shows, Las Vegas International Hotel, Las Vegas, NV Label: Straight Arrow Special Products SA/SP 2015-32-02 Coming out soon is the 5th volume of Straight Arrow's „The Rick Rennie master tapes“ series - a double-digipak CD release, called "Ol' Snake Hips Is In Town!", featuring the August 21st, 1970 Las Vegas dinner and midnight shows.

Of the six shows that Rick recorded during this engagement, the shows on August 21st, 1970 were his favorite. The shows captured here represent Elvis at his zenith. His enthusiasm for performing live in front of an audience is so obvious, and his powerful charisma shines brighter than ever. Interestingly, he performs 'Tiger Man' as stand-alone versions here, and introduces it as his "second record" in a very matter-of-fact way. He also sings a snatch of the Buck Owens classic 'Crying Time', which really makes you wish that he'd recorded a proper version of it.

The August 21st, 1970 Dinner show was first released in 1998 („From Vegas To Macon") and reissued in 2011 („August Reloaded"“). The August 21st, 1970 Midnight show was first released in 2001 („You've Lost `That Lovin' Feelin''“) and was never re-released - until now.

As with every Straight Arrow’s upgrade, this beautifully designed double-digipak edition is limited to 500 copies. If you enjoyed previous volumes of the „From the Rick Rennie Master Tapes“ series, you cannot go wrong with "Ol' Snake Hips Is In Town!". If you're a fan who only wants his finest shows - get it. If you're a fan who's not too well -versed on audience recordings - make sure that this one is your first purchase. If you are a collector who knows Straight Arrow and appreciates what the label stands for - then getting this new release is your # 1 priority. Another true gem from the label that cares. Tracklist:
