February 09 - Vintage Rock

Elvis Presley is featured in volume 40 of the Vintage Rock magazine with “Rockabilly is go!” as the main theme. The magazine looks at "Elvis in the 70's".

Description:
The newest issue of Vintage Rock brings you a rockabilly celebration. A "rollercoaster of the big names of rockabilly", but also a scurry through the hooting’ and hollerin’ weirdo’s, oddballs, one-hit and no-hit wonders that cut some of the most remarkable music of the 1950s. But whether you’re a newbie needing a primer on legendary cuts and the sharpest of stars, or a seasoned rockabilly who wants some rarer fare to add to your collection, it’s a good place to start.

The magazine takes a look at Elvis in the 70s, during a time that much focus was on his personal deterioration. Find a different take on the later reign of the king as BBC DJ, super-fan and author Matt Shepherd reminds us of the decade that still showed just how great an artist Elvis could be.

February 05 - A Radio Star Died

George Klein, the deep-voiced radio personality who became friends with Elvis Presley in high school and stayed close to the King of Rock 'n' Roll throughout his career, has died. He was 83.

Marian Justice Cocke, Elvis Presley's former personal nurse posted on her Facebook page the following message: "I regret to inform you that George Klein passed away just moments ago. At this time, I have no further information to pass on, however I will keep you informed ASAP.
Rest In Peace my dear fr iend ; I love you my dear friend
God Bless and TLC".

Presley's former wife, Priscilla Presley, told The Associated Press that Klein died Tuesday at hospice in Memphis, Tennessee. Priscilla Presley said Klein had been suffering from illness, including pneumonia, for about two weeks. She said she had been in constant contact with Klein and Presley's other close friends, including Jerry Schilling and Marian Justice Cocke, while Klein was ill.

Graceland posted:

"Priscilla, Lisa and all of us with Elvis Presley Enterprises are deeply saddened that we have lost our dear friend George Klein. Elvis and George met at Humes High School in Memphis and formed a lifelong friendship. Elvis stood up as George’s best man at his wedding and George remained a close confidant throughout Elvis’ life. After Elvis’ passing, George continued as a great friend and supporter of Graceland, Lisa and Priscilla and continued to honor Elvis’ legacy through sharing stories and memories with fans around the world as a DJ on Elvis Radio at Graceland. Our hearts are with George’s family, friends and fans – as we celebrate his life and his important place in the history of Memphis music".

Klein met Elvis Presley in 1948 at Humes High School in Memphis and they were close friends until the rock 'n' roll icon died in 1977. Klein was part of Presley's entourage, known as the "Memphis Mafia," and enjoyed telling stories about the times he and Presley spent together.

Priscilla Presley said her former husband liked Klein's outgoing personality, his loyalty, and his sense of humor. She called their friendship a "guy's thing," with their own inside jokes and "their own language." Elvis Presley used to affectionately call Klein "GK."

"Their friendship was golden, truly golden," she said in a phone interview from Los Angeles on Tuesday night. "I don't think I've ever heard George say anything bad about anybody."

Presley served as Klein's best man, and Klein was a pallbearer at Presley's funeral. Klein appeared in his friend's film, "Jailhouse Rock." When Presley was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, Klein made the acceptance speech.

"Personally, Elvis was a great friend to me," Klein said in the speech. "You know, I never saw Elvis refuse an autograph. I never saw Elvis refuse a handshake. I never saw Elvis refuse to take a picture with anyone."

Klein hosted a radio show featuring Presley's music on Sirius XM. He had also hosted radio and television shows in Memphis dating to the 1960s. Klein was known throughout the city, speaking at charity events for no pay, Priscilla Presley said.

"He has been an unbelievable ambassador for the city, for Graceland, for Elvis Presley and his family," Calipari wrote.

In recent years, several friends of Elvis Presley -- Scotty Moore, Red West, D.J. Fontana -- have died. Priscilla Presley said she has thought about that, and calls it "a reality check." "It hits home," she said. "He's the last of our history, in many ways."

February 04 - A Shining Star Announced

The E.P Collector import label announced the release of "A Shining Star" containing the previously unreleased August 28, 1972 Midnight Show performance. This CD comes packaged in a nicely designed digi-pack with collection of great images taken during August/September 1972 concerts.

From the press-release:
As we begin 2019, E. P. Collector label is coming with another surprise! The Las Vegas, August 28, 1972 Midnight show is previously unreleased and moreover, it was never available in solid sound, until now!
It’s not easy to write something new about the August 1972 Las Vegas shows, without repeating well-known facts. Nevertheless, there’s one thing that stands out – it was Elvis’ very last Vegas season when he was singing consistently well during all of his concerts. There was not a single average or controversial show and no cancellations, either. Compared to Elvis’ April and November ’72 tours, where he was noticeably bloated and pale in the face, in August he was trim and suntanned. He looked absolutely great and his voice was excellent, too.

This is Elvis performing at his finest in Vegas, just before things went down the tube. There are no surprises, but his singing on this newly obtained audience tape is so good that it’s a delight to listen to this, following too many recent releases from his final years. It’s refreshing to hear the man deliver the goods in a no-nonsense fashion, singing the hell out of the ballads and rockin’ like a freight train on the up-tempo stuff. The set list may well be the best that he did in the seventies, and especially in this rather decent sound quality, this makes for a highly listenable CD. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with this one!

Tracks: 01. Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001 Theme) - 02. C. C. Rider - 03. Johnny B. Goode - 04. Until It’s Time For You To Go - 05. You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me - 06. You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin' - 07. Polk Salad Annie - 08. Instrumental Intermezzo - 09. What Now My Love (with false start) - 10. Fever - 11. Love Me - 12. Blue Suede Shoes - 13. Heartbreak Hotel - 14. All Shook Up - 15. Love Me Tender - 16. Hound Dog - 17. I’ll Remember You - 18. Walk That Lonesome Road (J. D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet) - 19. Suspicious Minds - 20. Band Introductions - 21. My Way - 22. A Big Hunk Of Love - 23. You Gave Me A Mountain - 24. Medley: Mystery Train / Tiger Man - 25. Can’t Help Falling In Love.

Guitar Man / Help Me

Released by on the Jarvis Records import-label in the vinyl single / CD set “Guitar Man / Help Me”. This set is available in yellow and on purple vinyl.

From the press-release:
In 1980 Felton Jarvis, Elvis' record producer for the last decade came to the remarkable idea to freshen up some of Elvis' recordings. The idea was to add total new backing tracks to Elvis' voice.  This resulted in the 1981 record release of "Guitar Man".

You hate it or you love it is probably the right thing to say about the album. Felton was convinced Elvis would have loved it. The title track "Guitar Man" written and first performed by Jerry Reed was one of the tracks considered for the album. Jerry Reed was part of the original recording by Elvis in 1967 and now Jerry Reed was back in the studio with Felton Jarvis to work on the new album. Besides the guitar work he also recorded a "duet" version of the song.
This version never made it to the album but it probably should have. Felton finished the track most likely for his own pleasure or maybe it was considered to end up on the album. We probably will never know as Felton Jarvis sadly passed away early January 1981 even before the album came out.

The second track on this 45RPM / CD combo is "Help Me". The song written by Larry Gatlin of Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. This track was not used on the “Guitar Man” album. This track has overdubs by the Gatlin Brothers and when you listen to it you will notice this version was probably not finished by Felton Jarvis, this is either an "early version" or he never go to the point of finishing it due to his untimely death.

Before the album would be released the idea raised to record a so called open-ended interview with Felton Jarvis for the radio stations. Disk Jockeys would be able to ask a question and Felton would answer the question that would be played from a record. The recording for this open-ended interview would take place somewhere in the last week of December. On December 16 1980 Jerry Flowers visited Felton to discuss the questions and prepare the interview. Jerry Flowers recorded this meeting as a test for the upcoming interview. The official interview never took place as Felton Jarvis suffered a stroke on December 19. Resulting in his death January 3rd 1981. RCA decided to release the informal recording on a record for Radio Stations. This complete recording is now available on this CD.

After the "Nashville Ballads" compilation comes the follow-up "Memphis Ballads". Housed in a 6 panel digipack, this CD contains 20 outtakes from 1969-1976, all recorded in his hometown Memphis, Tennessee.
