January 08 - The Best Of The ’68 Comeback Special

Elvis Presley’s "The Best Of The ’68 Comeback Special" is a new companion album to “Elvis All-Star Tribute” NBC’s upcoming star-studded special celebrating the 1968 television special. This album is due February 15, 2019. If you buy the album at Walmart the album comes with a copy of the original TV Special.

From the press-release:
An ideal set for longtime Elvis fans and newcomers, “The Best of the ’68 Comeback Special,” comprises the Elvis recordings and performances that inspired the upcoming tribute and showcases a new version of the legendary closing number, “If I Can Dream,” as heard in the new special — featuring Elvis’ original vocals alongside new performances by Carrie Underwood, Shawn Mendes, Post Malone, Darius Rucker and Blake Shelton. The album features 15 Elvis performances from the “stand-up” and “sit-down” shows filmed for the ’68 broadcast, plus three original studio recordings to represent songs that appear in the new special.

The original special, recorded over several sessions in June 1968, featured Elvis playing the songs that mattered most to him, in his first live performance since 1961. When it aired on December 3, 1968, the special was the week’s highest-viewed television program, re-establishing Elvis as a driving force in popular music. The special was recently revisited in 2018 in the 5CD/2 Blu-ray Disc box set ’68 Comeback Special: 50th Anniversary Edition.

NBC’s new two-hour program will pay tribute to Elvis Presley’s “’68 Comeback Special,” recreating the iconic night with musical performances, a showcase of rare footage and interviews with Pricilla Presley and Steve Binder, the director of the original special, plus a special appearance from Lisa Marie Presley.

“Elvis All-Star Tribute” is being produced by Ken Ehrlich for AEG Ehrlich Ventures, LLC. Ehrlich is one of event television’s most prolific producers, from the annual Grammy Awards telecast, which he has produced since 1980, to numerous single artist and event specials including the Global Citizens Festival, which he produces for MSNBC.

Details on the All Star TV Special

On the day Elvis Presley would have turned 84, NBC is marking the occasion by announcing performers for its “Elvis All-Star Tribute,” which will air on February 17 from 9-11 p.m. (ET/PT).

A healthy mix of young stars (Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Alessia Cara, Shawn Mendes, Adam Lambert and Kelsea Ballerini) and established names (Blake Shelton, John Fogerty, Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, Josh Groban, Darius Rucker, Pistol Annies, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town and Mac Davis) recreated the look and feel of the famed Elvis “’68 Comeback Special.” Complete with its “boxing ring without ropes” set on a Universal City soundstage, the special, hosted by Shelton, was taped last October before an invited audience. Ken Ehrlich produced and Don Was served as musical director.

With Ehrlich on board as producer for his own AEG Ehrlich Ventures, the longtime Grammy guru leaned on his years of experience to match the right performer with the right song and come up with well-curated collaborations. Speaking to Variety, Ehrlich explains: “I was just listening to John Legend one day and thought, he’d be perfect for ‘A Little Less Conversation.’ … Keith Urban personally requested Post Malone for a duet on ‘Baby What You Want Me to Do,’ a section of the show which recalls the part when Elvis and his band were just casually playing together onstage. When I asked Post Malone about performing it, he said, ‘Oh, yeah, the Jimmy Reed song.’”

Other highlights from the two-night taping included Shawn Mendes’ take on “Hound Dog,” which prompted a laughing Mike Stoller — seated in the studio audience — to utter his famous refrain, “I always preferred Big Mama Thornton,” and Adam Lambert’s cover of “Blue Suede Shoes,” for which he paid homage to the Carl Perkins-penned original by sporting a pair. Says Lambert: “What was I supposed to wear? Red ones? Elvis defined pop culture in the ’50s with his voice, style and swagger. He was one of the first icons I ever listened to, so to take the stage during this anniversary tribute feels like a big honor.”

Aside from the in-the-round presentation, there are several other iconic set pieces, including Jennifer Lopez singing “Heartbreak Hotel” against the glimmering neon lights spelling out ELVIS, along with Yolanda Adams and Carrie Underwood’s gospel tribute and Josh Groban’s operatic “It’s Now or Never.”

January 07 - Elvis Stepbrother Died

On the Facebook page of Pastor Rick Stanley this message was posted: “Pastor Rick has joined Elvis in Heaven tonight. He passed away gently and without pain. God has blessed his sweet soul”.

His brother David Stanly posted on his page:

"It is with a heavy heart, that I pass this information onto you... Ricky has taken a turn for the worst... They don't expect him to live more than a day or two, at most... His daughters will be with him, when he goes to be with the Lord... When his oldest daughter gets to his bedside, tonight... She will call me, so I can say, I love you and good bye to him... I want to thank you all, for your prayers and positive thoughts... They really meant a lot to us Billy Stanley

My brother Ricky is going home tonight to be with the Lord. He is moments from passing. His daughters are with him. They put the phone to his ear and I said my final goodbyes. I’ve never been this sad. I love you Ricky. Gods open arms are waiting to welcome you home my big brother". David Stanley

Rick Stanley, a stepbrother to Elvis Presley, died of liver failure early Monday morning, Jan. 7, in Aiken, S.C.. In 1960 he and his two brothers became stepbrothers to Elvis Presley when their mother, Dee, divorced her husband and married Elvis Presley's father, Vernon. After the marriage the couple moved to Graceland where they lived for most of the next 17 years.

January 04 - King Creole Vinyl

The Friday Music label re-issued Elvis Presley’s “King Creole” soundtrack album as a limited edition  on translucent red-colored audiophile vinyl. This edition is mastered by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and comes in a gatefold cover.

Product Description:
In 1958 after several chart topping albums and a bevy of number one singles, more incredible fame followed as the King Creole movie starring Elvis Presley became a box office smash. The soundtrack album also was a blockbuster as it topped the charts, making this his sixth smash album in a row!

Both the King Creole movie and soundtrack LP truly proved once again that his career was unlike any other in music history. Filled with more hits than a New Orleans jukebox, the King Creole album takes off with several smashes in a row, including the classic title track rocker King Creole featuring Scotty Moore's trail blazing guitar work and the chart topping single Hard Headed Woman. The album also features the stellar bayou rock blues of Crawfish which amazingly sounds like some of the classic southern rock sounds to grace the radio throughout the sixties and seventies.
In total, the album showcases 11 important Elvis Presley recordings which have truly gone on to become international classics.

Side 1: King Creole - As Long As I Have You - Hard Headed Woman - Trouble - Dixieland Rock
Side 2: Don't Ask Me Why - Lover Doll - Crawfish - Young Dreams - Steadfast, Loyal And True - New Orleans

January 03 - A Hell Of A Ride

Pat West and Jon W. Sparks have finished the upcoming book "A Hell Of A Ride: Recollections of a Remarkable Life Before, During and After Elvis & The Memphis Mafia" by Red and Pat West. There is no definite publication date yet, they hope to get it published this year.

Red West and Elvis were friends ever since the day in high school when Red broke up a plan by some punks in the boys room to give shy outsider Elvis an unwanted haircut with a pair of scissors. The events between that moment and Red’s death in 2017 could fill a book, and that’s just what he and his wife Pat were finishing up when an aortic aneurysm felled the man who was not only a friend and confidant to Elvis, but also someone who had carved out his own career as a songwriter and film and television actor.

The recording sessions took place on January 10 & 11 at RCA recording studios in Nashville, and on January 30 & 31 at the label’s studios in New York. Additional material originated from sessions at Sun Studio in Memphis, on July 5, August 19, and September 10, 1954, and on July 11, 1955.
