Double Dollars

Warhol's 'Double Elvis' (Ferus Type), a silver silkscreen image of Elvis Presley depicted as a cowboy, fetched $37,042,500. It had been expected to sell for $30 million to $50 million. The auction house said it was the first 'Double Elvis' to appear on the market since 1995. Warhol produced a series of 22 images of Elvis. Nine are in museum collections.

May 08 - If Artists Can Dream

Graceland and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art are excited to announce the “If I Can Dream” Elvis Art Contest and Exhibit. 


Artists are invited to create an original piece of artwork based on their response to the lyrics “If I Can Dream” for a chance to have it selected to appear at a special exhibit of artwork at the Memphis Brooks Museum. All forms of media are being accepted now and the deadline to submit your artwork is June 16, 2012. 
A professional panel of judges will select the artwork for the “If I Can Dream” Exhibit at the Memphis Brook Museum, which will be on display from July 21 - September 16. From the selections, the judges will award a first, second, and third place prize in three divisions: professional, non-professional, and youth. The winners will be announced on June 25. The remaining submissions will be a part of the exhibition via PowerPoint in the gallery. In addition, visitors of the exhibition will have the opportunity to vote for the “Fans Favorite” throughout Elvis Week 2012. For more information on how to submit your entry and additional guidelines, visit the BrooksMuseum.org.

On 7 May 2012 BBC Radio 1 broadcasted the official Top 150 Biggest Selling Singles of the 21st. Century. Elvis Presley was listed at #108 with the 'JXL-remix' of 'A Little Less Conversation'.

May 06 - Graceland Through The Years

Boxcar Enterprises shared the cover-art and relese-date of their upcoming book 'Graceland Through The Years 1957-1977'. The book is due end of June 2012. The first release will be a limited first edition print run of 2000 copies with a hard cover and a hard card outer 
slip case while the second release won't be a limited edition run but will have a hard cover but no 
slipcase.

May 05 - Can Graphic Elvis Get Into Comics Heaven For Free?

Elvis Presley tries somewhat humorously to get past heaven’s pearly gates in the new teaser video for Stan Lee’s original short story, “Elvis.” The afterlife fantasy by comics legend Lee was originally created as part of Liquid Comics’ $195 hardcover anthology Graphic Elvis, which is limited to 2,500 copies. Now the story is a cool component of the Graphic Elvis preview that will hit comics stores this Sunday as part of Free Comic Book Day.


Why an Elvis tribute illustrated by some of comics top creators? Presley was a confessed comics geek who, before and since his death 35 years ago, has appeared everywhere from Captain America to the The Sandman.


Plus, the King knew how to make a superheroic entrance. “I remember the time I first saw him on TV, when he burst upon the music scene like a blazing comet,” Lee said in a statement from Liquid Comics. “I remember the indescribably powerful impact he had on the youth of the nation — and the world.”
Lee’s patently enthusiastic story joins further Graphic Elvis explorations from comics talents like Paul Pope, Tony Millionaire and Gilbert Hernandez. The Millbranch import label announced the release of volume 4 in their Bicentennial King series. This volume is limited to 300 copies and due May 9, 2012.

The Victrola importlabel announced the release of the CD 'Elvis Is Back - Special Edition'. It is a double CD, packed in a digipack with a 20 pages booklet, extensive liner notes, 24bit/96khz remastered sound. The first CD has a total running time of 51:01, the second disc runs for 73:40 minutes.

Jailhouse Rock EP Announced 


The Audio Fidelity label announced the release of the EP 'Jailhouse Rock' which is due June 5, 2012.

"...one of The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock 'n' Roll".


In the fall of 1957 "Jailhouse Rock" was first released in the US as a single backed with "Treat Me Nice" and was #1 for seven weeks. Early in 1958 it entered the British charts at number one, making it the first single ever to do so and remained there for three weeks. "Jailhouse Rock" also spent some time at the top of the Country and the R&B charts.  Jailhouse Rock was not  released as an LP although it contains some of Elvis's best songs.
Five of the six songs from the movie were released as part of an extended-play, seven-inch 45 RPM record that soon topped the Billboard EP charts, eventually selling an additional two million copies and earning another double-platinum RIAA certification.
The Jailhouse Rock tunes are unassailable - the writing and production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller played prominent roles in the making of the soundtrack. The pair took over the recording sessions, serving as unofficial producers of "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care," and other tunes. Their collaboration with Elvis and his musicians on "Jailhouse Rock" resulted in the singer's hardest-rocking movie song. As D.J. Fontana once noted about his drum playing on the record, "I tried to think of someone on a chain gang smashing rocks." 
The performance in the film of the title song by the young and sensual, "dangerous" Elvis complete with chorus boys dressed as convicts is legendary.  
One of the best of Presley's films, Jailhouse Rock is a perfect balance of song and story - seldom would Elvis be so well showcased in the future.
Elvis Presley's songs have become an integral part of American culture. All were interpreted and recorded by one of the most successful performers American popular music has ever seen. The Jailhouse Rock EP soundtrack is a classic example of the "early" Elvis on the rise to super-stardom. Elvis at his best.

John Wilkinson Back In Hospital

 

John Wilkinson is going in for gall bladder surgery tomorrow, Wednesday, at 6:30 am. Because of all the previous surgeries the doctors may have to keep him there overnight. So, please put some prayers out that everything goes smooth, thanks in advance.
