December 09 - Elvis Our Brother From France

Billy, Ricky and David Stanley announced today that they are writing a new book about their life with their world famous stepbrother Elvis Presley. The book, entitled "Elvis: Our Brother" is due August 16, 2016.

The new Billboard charts for the week ending December 19, 2015:

• 'It's Christmas Time' rises from 78 to 59 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. It also rises from 65 to 47 on the Top Album Sales Chart (selling some 11,430 units); rises from 11 to 8 on the Catalog Album Chart and rises from 8 to 7 on the Holiday Album Chart.
• 'The Classic Christmas Album' rises from 194 to 132 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart; is also a re-entry at 97 on the Top Album Sales Chart; rises from 26 to 25 on the Catalog Album Chart and rises from 3 to 1 on the Country Catalog Album Chart.
• 'If I Can Dream' drops from 102 to 148 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart; remains at 2 on the Classical Album Chart and drops from 57 to 78 on the Top Current Album Chart.

December 07 - "Grammy Nomination"

Elvis Presley is nominated for a 2016 Grammy, well "kind off". Nathanio Strimpopulos, art director for Third Man Records is nominated for "Best Package" for the Record Store Day re-issue of "My Happiness". 

This year's top nominees for the 58th Grammy Awards, presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, include Kendrick Lamar (who received 11 nominations), megastar Taylor Swift (seven nominations), and Canadian crooner the Weeknd (seven). But somewhat bizarrely also included Elvis Presley for a record that he only recorded on acetate for himself.  

Supporting Elvis' nomination are also current stars such as Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift who earned the trifecta of nominations with album, record, and song of the year categories.

Jack White bought Elvis' first acetate for $300,000 and the direct facsimile was released through his "Third Man Records" label. The 10-inch, 78rpm facsimile vinyl re-release of Elvis Presley’s “My Happiness” in the award honors the label's art directors Jack White and  Nathanio Strimpopulos.

Follow That Update

The Follow That Dream collectors label announced that the 2 CD "Elvis’ Golden Records Volume 3" and "Elvis in Alabama" containing the September 06, 1976 afternoon and evening shows, will be out later this week. The Follow That Dream Records and Sony/RCA are not to happy with the earlier announced bootleg release "The Complete Frankie & Johnny Sessions". 

The label also announced that future releases containing studio marterial will be released in the 7 inch format while live soundboard recordings will be released in the smaller 5 inch package.

Here is the definitive package for the Gravel Road Music import-release "Elvis - Rejuvenated and Rockin’"  containing the December 14, 1975 Dinner Show performance as recorded at the Hilton Hotel Las Vegas, NV. 

Elvis Birthday Celebration 

Music fans from around the world will travel to Elvis Presley’s Graceland in January 2016 to celebrate the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s birthday. Numerous events are scheduled, including the Elvis Presley Birthday Proclamation Ceremony on Friday, January 8 at 9:30 a.m. Central Time, which includes a cake cutting ceremony on the front lawn of Graceland in Memphis.

The birthday celebration at Graceland will also kick-off a year-long celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Elvis’ breakout year in music, film and television.  In January 1956, Elvis’ first gold record, “Heartbreak Hotel” was released and by April had sold one million copies. He ended the year with two million-selling albums.  He made his national television debut on The Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show on CBS that same year and went on to appear on network television 11 times that year, including his legendary performances on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” He also starred in his first movie, “Love Me Tender,” and signed a seven-year film contract with Paramount Pictures.

Special guest speakers at the Graceland events include Glenn Derringer who, as an 11-year-old child-prodigy pianist appeared on the Dorsey Brothers Show with Elvis in March 1956. He’ll share his memories of the man the world would later know as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Also speaking will be June Juanico, who dated Elvis in 1955-1956. 

The Auction at Graceland will kick-off the celebration on Thursday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. Central Time in the Graceland Archives Studio.  Among the 126 authenticated artifacts consigned for auction is the legendary guitar played by Elvis during the groundbreaking "Aloha from Hawaii" concert televised worldwide via satellite in 1973, and also played by Elvis at over 100 other live performances from 1971 through 1975. 

This Gibson Ebony Dove guitar, with an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000, has never been up for auction before and is one of the most culturally-significant and celebrated guitars in music history. 

Other artifacts up for auction include a 1958 handwritten two-page letter Elvis wrote to his friend Alan Fortas while he was stationed in Germany, estimated between $30,000 - $50,000, and the gold-toned microphone & cord used on stage by Elvis at the International Hotel in 1969, estimated between $10,000 - $15,000. Graceland’s new Hollywood VIP exhibit, “Elvis in Hollywood: From Teen Idol to Leading Man,” will open on Thursday, January 7 and continue the 60th anniversary celebration by highlighting Elvis Presley’s time on the silver screen.  The exhibit will feature artifacts from Hollywood blockbusters such as “Love Me Tender” (1956), “Loving You” (1957) and “Viva Las Vegas” (1964) to tell the story of how Elvis transitioned from groundbreaking music artist to Hollywood’s highest-paid actor. Additional artifacts include wardrobe, personal scripts (featuring his own handwritten notes), rare behind the scenes photos, and a variety of other Elvis movie memorabilia.

Other activities celebrating the birthday include the Memphis Symphony Orchestra with  singer/musician/song writer Terry Mike Jeffrey and his band performing a Pops concert entitled “Love Me Tender: The Great Elvis Love Songs” on Saturday, January 9 at the Cannon Center in Memphis.

December 06 - He's Back - Elvis The New Sessions

There is a new CD just out called “Elvis: The New Sessions” and it's a follow-up to one issued earlier this year called "Elvis: The New Recordings".

From the press-release:
The latest has 20 of EP's best vocals in updated musical settings such that these songs now sound as if he just recorded them today! The new musicians on the latest overdub CD have also played on thousands of recordings, backing artists such as Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Patti Austin, Barry Manilow, Carrie Underwood, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Don McLean, Jaci Velasquez, Paul Simon, the Dixie Chicks and more. One of them even played for the Pope! So the sound is great.

The repertoire on the new CD runs the gamut from Memphis-style rock and blues (some hot guitar licks for sure!), to pop (with pretty strings), country (with steel, dobro, mandolin), some Latin-flavored uptempo songs (including twin trumpets), a reworked gospel track and even Elvis singing “Silent Night” accompanied by an angelic children’s choir! December 05 - Right Direction In Johnson City

The Touchdown import-label announced the release "Right Direction In Johnson City" containing an audience-recording from March 19, 1976.

For our last CD "Atlanta Loves Elvis" we selected one of the best Shows from his last Tour in 1976 and for our new CD we will stay in the same Year. This time we decided to take a show from Johnson City from his first Tour in 1976. With "Right Direction In Johnson City" we present you his show from the 19th of March 1976. Again it`s an Audience Recording and the quality is really good for this kind of recordings. With no doubt this show is the best from his first Tour that year and for sure also one of the best of the whole year. The performance of Elvis is on the same level as the one from his last tour and the Set list is excellent. A Guide to the Australian Records

Just released is Glenn Reimer’s collaborative effort with noted Elvis historian, Peter R. (Bob) Hayden: "A Guide to the Australian Records of Elvis Presley The Vinyl Years 1956 – 1990".

From the press-release:
The release weighs in at over 1 kilogram and contains 250 pages, making it the most exhaustive examination of Elvis’ record history in Australia. The result of many years of research, it included the author spending countless hours scouring through library records and Elvis collections in order to source the most authoritative information possible. The release includes many value-added features including:

- All the daybills posters, film release dates in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne

The American Sound sessions of ’69 are an iconic marker in Elvis Presley’s career. The Singer Special of ’68 had returned the King to the throne he had vacated for Hollywood for the past decade. He returned to Memphis, where it all began. He was home, he was recharged and in fine form vocally, mentally and physically. Chips Moman presented the songs to Elvis and produced the rhythm sessions with the Memphis Boys; Reggie Young, Tommy Cogbill, Bobby Emmons, Bobby Wood, Mike Leech and Gene Chrisman. A fine stable of musicians who contributed a style which was heavily R&B influenced. This and the fact that Chips had a knack for producing hits is what drew Elvis to American Sound in the first place. Reports from direct sources state that Chips was very much in charge of production. He was the producer, no matter who got credit. Felton Jarvis and Al Pachucki, since they engineered the mixes, also received credit. The tracks on this disc present a warmer, richer sound and mix, than found on previously released albums! Every song presented here is in its original undubbed form, apart from „Gentle On My Mind“ and „I’m Moving On.“ As the American sessions were so important in Elvis’ career, they produced a stream of hits, this CD needs to have a space in your collection. Elvis Files Released

Volume 7 in The Elvis Files series has been released. It covers the years 1974-1975. The book is back from the printers and will be posted out in the next few days. Erik Lorentzen assures EIN that "Fans will be very impressed with all the great photos. I was fortunate to attend several of the shows featured in the book, and working on them brought back a lot of great memories." The seventh volume of the Elvis Files story chronicles Elvis' years on tour through the USA, the Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe seasons..

December 01 - Rejuvenated Turquise Vinyl Charts

The Gravel Road Music import-label announced the release of " Elvis - Rejuvenated and Rockin’".

These days, most people think of Elvis' final years as a steady decline until it all ended on August 16, 1977. Overall, that may well be true, but if you look at those years up-close, you will see that things are not as simple and as black & white as that. That viewpoint leaves out the nuances that make the overall picture so much more interesting. See, there were moments of promise, periods where Elvis got his act back together and where it seemed like he was back again and where the future seemed his. As we know now, he would always fall back into his old ways at some point, essentially because the real issues that he was dealing with at the time were never treated, only the symptoms. Those moments of promise must have made it even more frustrating for those around him to see him relapse time and again, thus affirming that the final path of self-destruction was inevitable.

One such period was December 1975. He'd been plagued by personal problems and health issues since July of that year. There were various troubling personal incidents during the July tour which alarmed insiders. Elvis seemed out of control. In August, he had to break off a Las Vegas engagements due to breathing issues and fatigue. The few concerts that he did manage to perform made it perfectly clear that something was seriously wrong. He seemed tired and pained. For the first time, those around him were seriously concerned about his well-being. Rumors began to appear in the press that he was suffering from a life-threatening illness.

Between August and November, Elvis rested and enjoyed himself, seeing movies with friends, riding around Memphis on his bike, dated various women (and yes, Linda Thompson was still his 'official' girlfriend)... At it paid off, to some extent. Unusually, he returned to Las Vegas for a two-week engagement. Traditionally, December is a quiet time in Vegas, but Elvis had no problems filling the showroom night after night. He still looked a bit bloated, but his performances were consistently strong, and far better than they had been in quite a while. He was in good voice, too, and he used it to great effect on the big dramatic songs that he loved performing. Elvis even added several rather interesting songs to his setlist, including the gorgeous 'Just Pretend' from 1970. His rapport with the audience was good, heartwarming even at times. And there were no incidents. Fans that saw Elvis at these shows were relieved. Whatever demons were troubling him earlier this year appeared to be gone now. And even though he was still a bit overweight, it was clear that he was doing better than last August. Perhaps from now on, things would be different. Maybe Elvis had now gotten the message, and no doubt he would make getting his health back together his # 1 priority. Who knows, maybe he would even change the format of his shows a bit... Things had gotten a bit stale and same in the past 2 or 3 years. There had been nights where he seemed barely awake on stage. And maybe he would finally record that rhythm & blues album that he'd been talking about in recent years. Yes, 1976 held a lot of promise for our man.

Well, today we all know what happened in '76. To say that things turned bad again somehow feels like an understatement. It was the year where things got really ugly. Even now, after almost 40 years, it's still painful to see photos and hear recordings from that year. The 'unmaking of Elvis Presley', as Peter Guralnick put it, was now painfully clear to even the casual observer. At this point, he was probably beyond saving... An early grave seemed inevitable. His bodyguards even began to make secret plans about what they would do if Elvis would die on the road. Yup.... Presley's unmaking was ugly.

But, listening to the December '75 engagement, we can still dream about how things might have been. The December 14, 1975 show being a good case-in-point. This isn't even the best show from the audience, and indeed Elvis himself makes a reference to feeling a bit tired from last night's shows - which indeed were excellent. However, he exudes great personal warmth, and his interaction with the audience is just lovely ("... One of us has got to get bigger lips!"). The show is a nice record of the great affection that Elvis felt towards his fans. It was not a typical showbizz thing... Elvis truly loved his fans and his kindness towards them on this recording is heartwarming. Just as importantly, he is in good voice, and he sings especially well on songs like 'And I Love You So', 'Trying To Get To You', a rare-for-the-period 'Until It's Time For You To Go', 'You Gave Me A Mountain', 'Just Pretend', 'Burning Love', 'How Great Thou Art', 'America The Beautiful', 'It's Now Or Never'.... That's a lot of strong performances in one show!

The first release of this show was somewhat problematic due to faulty mastering, but you can now enjoy this splendid show in far better audio: the sound was improved noticeably, and we were also able to repair various defects in the sound, thus resulting in a more pleasing listening experience.
"... but, until then, we'll just pretend...."

The UK based Rockwell Music label announced the release of the "I Want To Be Free" compilation on turquise vinyl in a limited run of 250 copies. It features recordings from the year 1957.
