Press Release - Elvis Day By Day 2020 – The Year In Review

In January 2020 I released the first volume of 'Elvis Day By Day - The Year in Review'. The reactions were positive and several readers described the book as a 2.0 version of the annual Elvis Specials that were published from 1963 to 1985.

Some reactions:

"This is an informative and easy to read book for fans and collectors, only when you read it you know what you missed. It should have been done years ago."

"I definitely recommend this book. It offers an excellent overview of everything Elvis has done in 2019."

"It’s brilliant, nothing sure of absolutely brilliant … Get it if you can, you will not be disappointed."

"It is extremely well laid out - in full colour, easily accessible and fully illustrated."

"There is nothing like this book, very original, and stands up to the best books out there of Elvis 10/10.

"What an amazing book this is! … I do try to keep up with all things Elvis but was pleasantly surprised to read something new to me on nearly every page! … Of course almost all of this can be found if you want to search the internet, however the book puts it all together in a much more accessible way.

Reason enough to do a 2020 edition!

Description: ‘Elvis Day By Day 2020 – The Year In Review’

A Yearbook About Him

The year 2020 will be remembered as a ‘special' year. We saw several great Elvis releases on CD and vinyl (lots of it!), many new books, movie releases on DVD, Blu-ray and in cinemas around the world. We had to say good-bye to friends from the Elvis world and there was the Covid-19 pandemic, which had a huge impact on the Elvis world too.

This year marked several anniversaries. We celebrated Elvis' 85th birthday with a virtual Elvis Week. 65 years ago Elvis signed his first contract with RCA Records, 60 years ago he appeared on Frank Sinatra’s 'Welcome Home Elvis’ TV-show, released the classic ‘Elvis Is Back’ album and his first gospel LP 'His Hand In Mine'.

2020 also marked the 50th anniversary of Elvis’ ‘On Stage Season’ and album, breaking his own attendance records, the sold-out Houston Astrodome Concerts and Elvis’ legendary visit to President Nixon at the White House.

But above all, 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the legendary Nashville Marathon recording sessions and the release of the 'Elvis: That's The Way It Is' movie and LP. Fans were spoiled with a great box-set, books and Elvis’ return to the big screen.

Everything Elvis Presley from 2020 (and more) is captured in this comprehensive day-by-day yearbook. Fully illustrated with new in-depth reviews, articles and interviews on the main - and odd-ball - releases of the year.

The good, the bad, the funny and the sad, and even the news and reviews you may have missed. All packed in one complete book to revisit 2020 as it happened.

November 24 - The Jewish World of Elvis

Roselle Kline Chartock published the the 276-page book 'The Jewish World of Elvis Presley'.

Description:

Elvis and Jews: At first glance these two words may not seem to go together. But the truth is that, despite growing up in a fundamentalist Christian family in the Deep South - an area sometimes known for its anti-Semitism - Elvis Presley nevertheless developed a deep affinity to Jews.

This book contains answers to two questions: What accounted for this deep affinity? And what was the nature of the personal relationships Elvis developed with the Jews he befriended in Memphis - including merchants and members of his inner circle, the Memphis Mafia - and those he met in the music and movie industries?

In this vivid description of Elvis' Jewish world - that also reflects his humanitarian and philosophical interests - Roselle Kline Chartock reveals a little-known side of this rock 'n' roll icon, including Presley's own Jewish heritage. There is within this book ample evidence that Presley's personality as well as his musical gifts were, in part, shaped by his Jewish world.

November 20 - Nashville and Debut Vinyl Releases

Sony Legacy released the 'From Elvis In Nashville' 4-CD and 2-LP sets. A special blue and pink vinyl edition was released through the Graceland store.

From the press release: For Elvis' first recordings of the 1970s, Elvis revisited the blueprint that made his 1969 American Sound sessions so successful—he cut loose live in the studio with a band in sync with his sensibility. Freed from obligations to music publishers, Elvis was able to pick and record songs that were contemporary, relevant and meaningful to him, from covers—including his transcendent interpretation of "Bridge Over Trouble Water"—to the epic material then powering his Las Vegas residencies and return to live performing. (In 1970 alone, Elvis performed two-month-long engagements at the International, playing two shows a night.)

Recorded live in RCA's Studio B in Nashville over the course of an epic five day/night run in June 1970 (with an additional session on September 22), Elvis' performances from those sessions formed the core of three of his most successful studio album releases from the 1970s: Elvis: That's the Way It Is, Elvis Country (I'm 10,000 Years Old) and Love Letters from Elvis.

Now, for the first time, the master recordings from the 1970 Studio B sessions may be enjoyed together as a single official Elvis album! On From Elvis In Nashville, Presley's studio tracks from the 1970 marathon sessions are presented in pristine audio, newly mixed by acclaimed engineer Matt Ross-Spring (John Prine, Jason Isbell) without the added overdubs or orchestration appearing on earlier releases.

Sony Legacy re-issued Elvis Presley's self titled debut album once m ore, this time on 200 Gr. white colored vinyl.

November 16 - Walk A Lonely Street with A Daragon

Author Tony Plews updated the cover of his upcoming book 'Walk A Lonely Street' which is due early December.

Night of the Dragon

The Straight Arrow import label announced the release of the 2-CD ‘Night of the Dragon‘ containing August 28, 1974 Dinner and Midnight show performances.

From the press release: Straight Arrow is pleased to bring you a new double CD dedicated to Elvis' 1974 Las Vegas Summer season, which was always rated as controversial due to Elvis in-between-songs comments in several shows. Nevertheless, musically, all shows were very good.

Straight Arrow has released only 2 shows from this engagement so far, ‘Karate Fever’ (August 31, 1974 Dinner show) and ‘Stormy Weather Ahead’ (September 2, 1974 Dinner show).

The August 28th recordings are sourced from recently discovered first generation copies of the original audience-recorded tapes, which have never been in circulation. These fascinating, previously unreleased concerts, were never before available in such an excellent sound quality!

Both setlists included several songs unique to this season: ‘It's Midnight’, ‘Big Boss Man’ and ‘If You Talk in Your Sleep’, the latter with a karate demo half way the song. The song selection clearly shows our man’s great variety of musical genres. From the sexy styling of ‘Fever’, the poignancy of ‘I'm Leavin'’, and the feel-good of two Olivia Newton John songs ‘If You Love Me (Let Me Know)’ and ‘Let Me Be There’. Most of all, perhaps,

Elvis touched first base musically with the stirring performances of ‘How Great Thou Art’. Also worth mentioning is the rare inclusion of ‘My Boy’ which was performed only once in 1974 (by request).

As usual, this release comes in a deluxe 4-panel double digi-pack with a collection of images of Elvis on stage from the 1974 Las Vegas Summer season. If you have enjoyed our previous August and September 1974 releases, we believe that you will love this one as well.

From the press release: This deluxe box set is focused on the third tour of 1977. Elvis’ live performances in 1977 are often criticized and not without a reason. But Elvis was still offering his fans an enjoying time, the magic of seeing Elvis in person probably exceeded the fact he often delivered a standard and sometimes even mediocre performance.

The reactions of the spectators are very telling. They scream, shout and get wild for their hero. While listening to the recordings of these shows you cannot draw any other conclusion than that the shows were below par. But the charisma of Elvis was enormous, which probably made this unnoticed by most of the fans present.

This set mostly contains soundboard & multitrack recordings but also contains two rare audience recordings. These high-quality audience recordings of the April 27 and 30 performances deserve a place in this box set. Both being first class audience recordings and remastered from scratch to achieve an optimal listening experience.

This 6-CD set includes a wonderful booklet with many rare and unpublished photos.

When a new Elvis movie was created, Colonel Parker used to ask several songwriters to write songs for the movie. The Colonel gave them a title or a description of the scene and the songwriters understood what kind of a song the he needed.

These so called ‘demos’ were recorded (at expenses of the songwriters) on an acetate disc and send to the Colonel for approval. Obviously there was competition between the different songwriters as the songs were either recorded by Elvis or … rejected.

The actual demos are unique. Usually only one or two acetates made and, due to the material (wax on a metal plate), they were very fragile and could only be played a few times.

This CD contains newly discovered demo recordings, all recorded and written for Elvis movies.

Some were not used for obvious reasons, simply because they were not good enough, and some you can actually imagine Elvis singing. ‘Fun in Acapulco’ is almost a copy of the demo, except for some lyrics that were changed during the recording session.

Most of these acetates come from the Dolores Fuller collection. Most have her lyrics with music composed by Ben Weissman. Exceptions are ‘Fun in Acapulco’ (Ben Weisman / Sid Wayne), ‘Night Life’ (Giant / Baume / Kaye), ‘I Need Somebody To Lean on’ (Pomus / Shuman) and ‘Love On The Rocks (Tepper / Bennett).

Some of these songs might turn out to be completely different then you expect. Sit back and enjoy!
