A record label representative says Tony Joe White, the country bluesman and hit songwriter behind such successes as “Polk Salad Annie” and “Rainy Night in Georgia,” has died Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee. Elvis Presley Enterprises filed another lawsuit against the city of Memphis this week, arguing a delay in the approval process for Graceland expansion plans is retaliatory and unlawful. “That’s not the first time Graceland has sued us, that’s I think the third time that’s happened,” Mayor Jim Strickland said Thursday. “Bottom line: The private owners of Graceland want public taxpayer dollars to put into their privately-owned facilities. And we have a problem with that.” The new lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court, alleges a delay earlier this month in the Land Use Control Board’s consideration of a major Graceland expansion plan was meant to punish Graceland. A 6,200-seat arena is among the expansion plans, which Memphis city officials have said they believe would violate a non-compete agreement with the FedExForum. The Economic Development Growth Engine of Memphis and Shelby County voted earlier this year in favor of the Graceland expansion project, provided it doesn’t violate the non-compete agreement. The Shelby County Commission in June gave its blessing to the expansion plans with the condition that a judge settles the dispute over the non-compete agreement. But action by the Land Use Control Board is being deferred until pending litigation in Chancery Court is resolved. Elvis Presley Enterprises is seeking an increase to the percentage of tax increment financing it receives to help pay for the next phase of the expansion project. The Memphis Grizzlies lease agreement for the FedExForum states that city funding can’t be used for a new venue that seats more than 5,000 people and would compete with the Downtown Memphis facility. The new lawsuit contends that the city, specifically Chief Legal Officer Bruce McMullen, took “unlawful and retaliatory” action, blocking the Memphis-Shelby County Office of Planning and Development from approving Graceland’s development application, in response to the Graceland stance on the arena agreement, and the fact that it obtained resolutions from EDGE and the county “over the city’s objections.” "Simply put, (Elvis Presley Enterprises) proceeded with the non-arena aspects of the project because it had an unfettered right to do so, and there was nothing prohibiting it from proceeding with that portion of the project," the lawsuit states. The allegations "appear to claim" the city shouldn't be allowed to communicate with the Office of Planning Development about the state court lawsuit, despite the fact that the office is a joint city-county operation, McMullen said in a statement, also noting that EDGE's approval of funneling taxpayer dollars to the Graceland expansion is contingent on a court ruling that it wouldn't breach the FedExForum non-compete agreement. That resolution would grow to 65 percent the share of funds Graceland draws from its tax increment financing district, which earmarks property tax revenue from assessed value increases within the district. McMullen in a statement called the new lawsuit largely a “rehash” of the allegations raised in a separate lawsuit in state court, which the city has filed a motion to dismiss. “It is hard to see how the lawsuit is legally sound,” McMullen said in the statement. “Unfortunately, once again it appears EPE is using lawsuits as part of their business strategy.” (Source: Elvis Club Berlin / Jamie Munks for Commerial Appeal)

The Victrola import-label announced the release of "Avventura In Oriente", the "ultimate release" of Elvis’ ''Harum Scarum" movie soundtrack material. From the press-release: What makes this new release so special? Most of it has been released before, but never before in such pristine quality! The outtakes come from a direct copy of a DAT cassette that was made on November 1989 in New York City. It was a surprise to discover masters that we had not heard in the way before. On this DAT copy there were also other outtakes from other studio sessions. Most of these outtakes have been released before but never before have they been heard in stereo. The special feature of the Harum Scarum sessions is that the songs were recorded with two drummers that can also be heard simultaneously, this is clearly audible in the sessions. The mono masters come from the first English pressing of the UK LP Harem Holiday. What you hear is the authentic sound that was on the LP. As this release deals with the year 1965, some other songs are included on this release as a bonus features; - Crying In the Chapel: was issued on April 6, 1965, in RCA's 'Gold Standard Series'. It became Elvis' first million seller (!) since 'Return To Sender' in 1962 and his greatest chart success over a six-year span. - (Such An) Easy Question: was released as a single on June 8, 1965. It was the follow-up release to 'Crying In The Chapel' and peaked at number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The single reached the top of the Billboard Easy Listening Chart, spending two weeks at number one in July 1965. Usually the Start releases come as a DVD-Recordable in a long digitized-pack. This release is limited to 500 copies. From the press-release: The year is 1968. After several years of making movies without personal appearances things are about to change. This new release is purely fictional and presents Elvis Presley’s Comeback Special in a totally different way; Elvis is hosting his own TV Special and tells his side of the story. Elvis talks about his career, first record and Hollywood. His personal life, tragedies, future plans and God, giving you an intimate look at his life and career in a way only he can. Including rare footage and home movies , original clips from the movies, and some cool vintage commercials from 1968! (Yes, the Big Mac also has its 50th anniversary!).
Presented in "True” widescreen for the first time! Not stretching out Elvis body or face, but all shots individually repaired for the best result! The opening is sensational and has a FULL version of Trouble/Guitar Man, including Elvis' footage from the Discotheque, Supper Club, wearing Black leather as well as the original version all edited to perfection! After the first "Elvis Speaks" part the show starts with some of his first Sun Records; That’s All Right, Trying To Get To You and Tiger Man get the special really started! Most clips have been re-edited for watching pleasure, for example the “break up" version of Heartbreak Hotel (second sit down) has been recreated as a full rockin’ version! Same goes for That’s All Right and Blue Suede Shoes; full versions without repeatable parts, making some portions shorter then usual but it all works quite well for the overall “feel” of this Special. The gospel section also has been re-done including rare alternate footage and performances. All songs have been re-edited. Elvis talks through the whole special and lots of rare footage accompanies him while doing so. We already can hear all the critics ... "Why include the boring commercials” ... but it is part of the idea of recreating something in a way as if it is 1968 and this special was shown on TV, including commercial breaks. Don’t worry, you can skip them if you like, but we advise not to do this the first time you watch it. All fans must agree that 1968 “Saved” Elvis' career, so no need to explain why the producers of this DVD called it: "I'm Saved".

It may be 41 years since the icon died tragically at only 42 years old but his music continues to live on, and likely will forever. It’s actually mind-blowing to think that his music has survived for almost as long as he was alive. In 2002 Sony Music released a new greatest hits collection titled ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits, which dominated charts across the world and sold millions and millions of copies. The set sold almost 2 million in the UK alone, proving just how popular The King still is.
16 years on from its original release, ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits has been reissued on 2LP vinyl. Taking inspiration from the album cover, the release has been pressed on gold vinyl making the whole package feel very special. The track listing for ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits was compiled by Ernst Mikael Jorgensen and Roger Sermon using chart data from a number of sources. The result is a somewhat definitive collection of Presley’s music taking in 30 songs that hit number one in either the US or the UK, along with the Junkie XL remix of a Little Less Conversation, which gave Presley a posthumous number one.

Due for release from Capitol / UME Records on November 16, 2018 is the Glen Campbell's lost album “Sings For The King”. The album also includes the gospel song “We Call on Him,” newly rendered as a duet between Glenn Campbell and Elvis Presley. It comes on CD an vinyl From the press-release: From 1964 to 1968 in between recording sessions with the Wrecking Crew and recording his own albums Glen Campbell was recruited to record songs for Elvis Presley. Originally intended as demos for Elvis' ears only, eighteen of these recently unearthed and unreleased gems will be released together on CD, LP and digitally for the first time, more than half a century later, as the lost album "Sings For The King" on November 16 via Capitol. 'Sings For The King' includes songs written by the songwriting team of Ben Weisman and Sid Wayne. Weisman is significant for having written the most songs recorded by Elvis than any other songwriter in history at 57. Weisman and Wayne turned to Glen Campbell who had perfect pitch and an uncanny ability to match Elvis's key and even mimic his delivery, to record fully fleshed out studio versions that they could present to Elvis as demos. The songs were discovered by Executive Producer Stephen Auerbach who found the fifty-year-old recordings on long-forgotten reel-to-reel tapes in a storage space belonging to his uncle-in-law, Ben Weisman. Of the 29 recordings that have been rescued, there are twelve of Glen's recordings that went on to be recorded and released by Elvis including "Stay Away Joe," "Clambake," "Spinout" and "Easy Come, Easy Go". The variety of the material is striking and ranges from the country-flavored "Any Old Time" to the more rocked-up "I'll Be Back" to meaty ballads like "I'll Never Know." On "I Got Love" Glen begins the song sounding like himself but then subtly shifts into Elvis's trademark tone. The album opens with the gospel song "We Call on Him," which features the two legendary voices fused into a duet, giving a real sense of how Glen's performances teed up these songs for Elvis, and then where The King took them and made them his own.
As noted music journalist and author Alan Light writes in the illuminating liner notes, "With their genre-bending musical exploration and rural Southern roots, it's no surprise that Glen Campbell and Elvis Presley formed something of a mutual admiration society. 'Elvis and I were brought up the same humble way,' Campbell once said, 'picking cotton and looking at the north end of a south-bound mule.' The friendship between the Rhinestone Cowboy and the King of Rock and Roll spanned three decades, and they often orbited each other professionally." Glen and Elvis first met in 1956, when Elvis performed in Albuquerque, where Glen had recently moved to join his uncle's band, Dick Bills and the Sandia Mountain Boys. "I saw him in the rough," Glen later said. "He was so electrifying." In 1960, Glen headed to Los Angeles to find work as a session musician and took a regular gig at a club called the Crossbow, where Elvis and his friends would sometimes come watch from a small private room upstairs. As a member of the incomparable group of LA studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew, Glen appeared on dozens of immortal hits, from "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin' " to "Strangers in the Night." In 1963 alone he added his guitar to almost 600 sessions, including his one recording with Elvis for the "Viva Las Vegas". By 1967, Glen's own career was exploding with the release of his breakthrough albums Gentle on My Mind and By the Time I Get to Phoenix, which both reached Number One on the charts, and made Grammy history by sweeping the Song and Performance awards in both the pop and country & western categories. The following year, By The Time I Get To Phoenix took home the prize for Album of the Year, the first country record to do so. Yet Glen continued to knock out songs for Weisman and Wayne in whatever spare time he had. The relationship between these two Hall of Famers might have become more extensive: When Elvis was assembling his TCB band in 1969, his two finalists for the lead guitar chair were Glen and James Burton. But while Glen was riding high as a solo artist following the monster hits "Gentle on My Mind," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and "Wichita Lineman," Burton was available since his previous boss, Ricky Nelson, had recently broken up his backing band. As it turns out, though, there was a deep connection between Elvis and Glen that almost no one was aware of until now, with the release of Sings for the King. This historic collection casts new light on the quiet influence that one musical giant, and an often-overlooked songwriting team, had on America's greatest rock and roll star. Tracks: 1.
