The German based PSM-Music released the LP “Hits from the Movies” through their Gold Vinyl / The Magic of Vinyl label.
The company is not new to Elvis Presley, it has released numerous compilations and on CD and vinyl over the years, including several of Elvis Presley’s original albums.
New in their catalogue are colored picture disc compilations. “Hits from the Movies” is the latest compilation.
Design
The compilation comes nicely packed with the vinyl on top of the sleeve. And I like it that way. The marble effect works great for the vinyl, but less for the sleeve, it looks like the designer just added a simple Photoshop ‘watercolor’ filter.
Content
The compilation contains material from Elvis Presley’s movies “Jailhouse Rock”, Loving You”, “G.I. Blues”, “Kid Galahad”, Girls! Girls! Girls!”, Blue Hawaii” and “King Creole”. The tracks are presented per movie but not in chronological order, resulting in a nice mix of hits and soundtrack material, both up-tempo rockers and ballads.
This set shows once again that not all soundtrack material is bad. What's not to like about the rockers like "Jailhouse Rock", heartfelt ballads like "Young and Beautiful" and "Can't Help Falling In Love", a bluesy "Mean Woman Blues", upbeat tracks like "G.I. Blues" and "Teddy Bear", a classics Rock and Roll in "Blue Suede Shoes" and some old dixie with "New Orleans".
O.K. they could have skipped "Wooden Heart". It may have fitted in the movie, but it always wondered me why this old tune became one of Elvis Presley's biggest hits (especially in Europe).
There is a clear difference between the pre- and post-army years tracks. The latter are more polished. Looking back it could have been a sign of things to come regarding Elvis Presley’s later soundtrack albums.
Audio Quality
The audio quality is good, the tracks are most probably taken from digital sources as the company doesn’t have access to the original masters. Although this could be a put off for the audiophiles in the fan-base, most fans won’t notice this. Even Elvis Presley’s own record company doesn’t use the original masters for most of their (vinyl) releases.
Overall conclusion
Overall this set makes a nice compilation when in the mood for some Elvis Presley hits, with the disc looking great spinning on your turntable.
This title will was released in Germany January 2020 and will be available in the United Kingdom and United States April 17, 2020, but you can already pre-order it.
