August 09 - God Is Greater Than Gaming Promotion
We are now one week away from the August 16 release of the 'Elvis By Request: The Australian Edition' CD and Sony Music Australia has organized a huge promotion for the release. 'Elvis By Request' is as the title suggests a compilation of Elvis Presleys most popular songs as voted for by his Australian fans online between June 4 and July 13, 2012. Fans were able to select their choice from a list containing over 800 Elvis Presley recordings. The track listing will be revealed on August 16, 2012.
This is the cover-art for the DVD edition of the 'God Is Bigger Than Elvis' documentary DVD featuring Dolores Hart. The DVD is due October 10, 2012.
Elvis Week Tips in Southern Gaming and Destinations Magazine
Southern Gaming and Destinations Magazine recently posted an article with fast facts on Elvis Week including helpful tips and the complete schedule of events. Southern Gaming and Destinations writer Rudi Schiffer also spoke with Elvis' long-time friend Geroge Klien about the importance of preserving Elvis' legacy. “Elvis is rocking through generation after generation, and who can say when it will fade. I don’t think the fan fervor will ever decline,” Klien said. “Elvis will always be a pop icon, and Elvis Week only confirms that and further strengthens the ties that bind us to him."
The article describes Elvis Week as "hordes of fans descending on Memphis for Elvis Week, not for just one day, like many stars would be glad to have, but for a whole week of festivities."
Elvis' Birthplace Unveils New StatueOn Thursday, August 9, 2012, Tupelo unveiled a larger-than-life statue to commemorate the life and legacy of Elvis Presley. Hundreds of fans gathered in the Tupelo Fairpark District, former site of the Tupelo fairgrounds where Elvis performed the famous homecoming concert in September of 1956, to see the statue unveiled.
The statue was sculpted by Mississippian William Beckwith based on the Roger Marshutz's 1956 photograph of Elvis reaching into the crowd in Tupelo. It is known by fans as “the hands.”
The unveiling was held as part of Tupelo’s free summer music concert series titled “Down on Main” and was part of a celebration of Mississippi artists. Mississippians Eden Brent and Marty Stuart headlined the show for the night. The Tupelo Unity Choir opened the night with the gospel music Elvis loved and joined Eden Brent on the stage for a couple of songs.The statue was met with thunderous applause with many fans breaking into tears. The remainder of the night was spent in line waiting to get their picture made holding the hand of Elvis. Traffic at the statue has been steady since the unveiling and is anticipated to remain that way through the Elvis Week activities.
Of the statue, Neal McCoy, executive director of the Tupelo CVB commented, “The statue is more than just a piece of bronze erected in Elvis’ honor. It’s a constant reminder of how important Tupelo’s cultural influence was to him and how important he still is to Tupelo .”
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Miss. on Jan. 8, 1935, where he grew up around his extended family. In the thirteen years that Elvis spent in Tupelo, he was exposed to many different kinds of music that played an important role throughout his career. He was exposed to gospel music in his childhood church, discovered the blues in the Shake Rag community and on “the Hill” where his family lived for a while and he listened to country shows on the radio with his family during this time.

Sony Japan released the Japanese edition of the 'I'm An Elvis Fan'. It contains 26 tracks, selected by Japanese fans.
Sand CastlesFIESA is a mega exhibition of sand sculptures held in Portugal in Pêra (Algarve) every year. Each new edition is dedicated to a different theme. Idols are the theme of this year, a tribute to various characters admired and praised by our society. Carved in sand visitors will find icons of sports, from the movies, from music, fashion, politics and religion. This year visitors can find an Elvis sand sculpture in the exhibition which will be open until October 25th.

Elvis And Nashville
Noted music writer, Dan Cusic published his book 'Elvis and Nashville'. The 300 page account of Elvis' relationship with 'Music City' Nashville was published in softcover by Brackish Publishing.
Elvis Presley and Nashville were connected from his the earliest days of his career. In 1954 he appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and recorded his first number one hit, "Heartbreak Hotel" in Nashville in 1956. Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker, lived in Nashville and Elvis' fan club activities and merchandising were headquartered in Parker's office. The Straight Arrow import label announced the release of the Saturday, March 29, 1975 Dinner and Midnight Show, as recorded from the audience at the Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas, NV in a CD-set entitled 'Amore Elvis!'.

Straight Arrow is continuing their collector's series of 2 shows from one evening, released in a single package. This time the producers have chosen two excellent performances from Saturday, March 29, 1975 at the Las Vegas Hilton.
Elvis returned to Nevada in very good form when compared to his final shows of 1974. He included several cuts from soon-to-be-released "TODAY" album rather than some of his usual oldies. Presley's shows were shorter than his previous Vegas visit in August and September because he kept banter to a minimum.
On this collection there are worthy performances of "And I Love You So", "It's Midnight", "Big Boss Man", "Burning Love" and the powerful "My Boy". There are also some rarities, like a one-liner of "Rip It Up", "Tiger Man" not performed as a medley with "Mystery Train," and "Hawaiian Wedding Song" sung exclusively by Sherrill Nielsen.
As fans have come to expect, the tapes are of very good quality, sourced from early generation copies of original cassettes recorded by the same fan. The double digipak contains liner notes and is filled with photos from the March-April 1975 engagement. As usual, these recordings have been carefully engineered to be presented in the best possible sound.

Designer of iconic Sun Records logo dies in Memphis at 87.
Back in early 1952, Jay Parker was working as the art director at the Memphis Engraving Company when he received a visit from an old high school classmate with request to design a logo for his fledgling record label. The old school chum was Sam Phillips and the label was Sun Records. Parker, who would create the now iconic Sun logo, died on Monday at age 87, at his home in Memphis.
Born John G. Parker in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on February 1, 1925, he grew up in Florence, and graduated from Coffee High School where he and Phillips both played sousaphone in the band.
After studying at the Harris Advertising Art School in Nashville, Parker arrived in the Bluff City in 1946. He would serve as art director at both the Memphis Engraving Company and Eastex Packaging Company during a distinguished and award winning 40-plus year career.
His commercial work included designing notable packages for Alka-Seltzer and Super Bubble gum, as well and creating the tiger stripe helmet for the Cincinnati Bengals football team. Parker also taught graphic design courses at Memphis State University and was a well-respected watercolor artist.But his lasting contribution to the cultures of rock and roll and design came in 1952, when Parker crossed paths with his old friend Phillips at a Krystal restaurant Downtown. Phillips, an erstwhile radio deejay, had opened his Memphis Recording Service studio a couple years earlier, and was about to launch a blues and R&B label called Sun Records.
"Sam was getting started in the record business, and he wanted to know what I did now," recalled Parker in a 2004 interview with the Commercial Appeal. "When I told him, he wanted to know if we could do record labels. I had never done a record label, but I said, 'Sure.'"
Phillips had drawn up a few rough ideas of his own and wanted a logo to convey his optimistic outlook. As he told rock historians Colin Escott and Martin Hawkins in the late-'80s, "the sun to me — even as a kid back on the farm — was a universal kind of thing. A new day, a new opportunity."
"I did several sketches for Sam, and he picked one with a rooster on it," recalled Parker, whose design featuring a crowing cock, the rays of a rising sun, and circling stanzas of music. In effort to keep Phillips' costs low, he worked in one color, a rusty brown, and set it against a bright yellow backdrop for contrast. He charged Phillips $50 for the job.
The first official release bearing the Sun logo was on a Johnny London record, which appeared in stores in March of 1952. The label would become legend a few years later as Sun shifted its focus to the burgeoning rockabilly and rock and roll markets — ironic, since Parker himself wasn't a big fan of the music.
"Well, Dad was more interested in church and family and work than rock and roll," said Jud Parker.
The success of Sun artists Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins would make Parker's design familiar the world over — though the rooster would eventually be dropped from the logo with the shift from 78s to 45s, which required a bigger hole in the middle of the record.
The logo would remain an indelible image even as Sun ceased operation in the 1960s. Over the last few decades Sun has become arguably the most reissued label in history and Parker's design can still be seen on T-shirts, mugs, and other merchandise. "The funny thing was he was so humble about it," said Jud Parker. "He did not gain recognition until very late in life, it was rarely brought up…but he was very proud of his work."
Parker, who was laid to rest on Thursday, is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Arnett Parker; his daughter, Jan Clark of Marion, Arkansas, son Jud of Oakland, Tennessee, his brother, Floyd "Rusty" Parker of Florence and four grandchildren.

Of all the live concert recordings released by RCA during Elvis Presley’s lifetime, none carried the historic significance of his long-awaited New York City shows at Madison Square Garden in June 1972. Now, a pair of hour-long performances have finally been coupled in one package for the first time as "Prince From Another Planet: 40th Anniversary Edition." This deluxe 2-CD+DVD box set will be available everywhere October 30th through RCA/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment."Prince From Another Planet" takes its title from a New York Times headline that accompanied its rave review of the King Of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s four sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden (80,000 tickets sold), the weekend of Friday through Sunday, June 9 - 11, 1972. CD two reprises the Saturday night show in its entirety, some 20 songs (plus introductions) originally issued on LP on June 18, 1972, just eight days after the concert took place. CD one reprises the (slightly longer) Saturday afternoon show, some 23 songs (plus introductions), archived and issued for the first time 25 years later in 1997, on CD.
The Madison Square Garden recordings have been newly mixed for the first time by respected New York engineer Michael Brauer.
Adding to the historic weight of "Price From Another Planet" is an evocative 5,000-word essay written by Lenny Kaye, longtime guitarist for Patti Smith. Kaye actually covered the press conference and the concerts for his gig as music editor of Cavalier magazine in the ’70s. In addition to his roles as a musician and a producer of numerous reissues and compilations, Kaye has been annotating albums for more than four decades.
Accompanying the two CDs is a bonus DVD that presents unseen footage of the Saturday afternoon show, captured on hand-held camera by a fan, and now acquired by Legacy from that fan decades later for this package. The film is a revealing portrait of a physically commanding Elvis and his power-house TCB Band, background vocalists, and orchestra. Precious little visual documentation exists of Elvis in concert, so this footage is an historically important discovery.
The recently discovered footage is set to make its world premiere during Elvis Week in Memphis on Friday, August 17th, at 4:30 p.m. at a free event in the Elvis Week Entertainment Pavilion.
Along with the concert film on the DVD is another video document, the press conference that took place on Friday afternoon before the big weekend. Attended by Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley, Elvis disarms and wins over the New York press corps with his good-natured demeanor.
For example, When asked, for example, “Which kind of song do you like doing the best?” Elvis answers, “I like to mix 'em up. A closer look at the concert repertoire confirms his answer. The set lists for the afternoon and evening shows are an eclectic mix, something for everyone. After the bombastic “Also Sprach Zarathustra” theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey," both shows are book ended at the start by “That's All Right” (from 1956), Creedence’s “Proud Mary” (via Ike & Tina Turner), Hoyt Axton’s “Never Been To Spain” (via Three Dog Night), and Dusty Springfield’s “You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.” Both shows end with “Suspicious Minds,” Kristofferson’s “For The Good Times,” Mickey Newbury’s “American Trilogy,” Willie Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away,” Don Gibson’s “I Can't Stop Loving You” (via Ray Charles), and of course, “Can't Help Falling In Love.”
The set lists are virtually identical, though four songs from the afternoon show were not performed at the evening show: Buffy Sainte-Marie’s “Until It’s Time For You To Go,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” Lowell Fulsom’s “Reconsider Baby,” and Don Ho’s “I’ll Remember You.” And one song from the evening show was not performed at the afternoon show: Man Of La Mancha’s “The Impossible Dream.”
With those exceptions, the central portion of each show is very nearly the same something-for-everyone program, starting with the Righteous Brothers’ “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'” and Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie,” then straight back to 1956-57 for “Love Me,” “All Shook Up,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” the medley of “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear” c/w “Don't Be Cruel,” “Love Me Tender,” and “Hound Dog.”
After being roundly excoriated by New York critics after his televised visits of 1956 (on Jackie Gleason’s Stage Show, in January, February and March), and 1957 (Ed Sullivan’s Toast Of the Town in January; and The Steve Allen Show in July), Elvis and his manager Tom Parker did not schedule another New York performance for some 15 years. Even after Elvis triumphed on his black leather NBC-TV “comeback” special of December 1968, and returned to public concert touring fulltime in August 1969 (at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, chronicled in 2010 on RCA/Legacy’s On Stage: Legacy Edition), they still waited three years to play New York.
When asked at the press conference why it took so long, Elvis answers with a straight face,: “I think it was a matter of not getting the building, the proper building. We had to wait our turn in order to get the building. Couldn't get a good building in fifteen years. No, all kidding aside, we had to wait our turn to get in... into the Garden, you know. I just hope we put on a good show for everybody. Oh, I like it. I enjoy it.”

The A side contains a rare radio report of the first days after the King’s unexpected passing, August 1977. Among the mourners who comment are Vernon Presley – just hours after the body of his son was found in Graceland’s bathroom. Goose bumps when you hear this, and undoubtedly to be classified under historic recordings.
The B side is for Elvis, with his version of 'Peace In The Valley' – the same song that his fans sang in front of the Gates after the tragic news had spread. Track number 2 is 'Take My Hand Precious Lord', which speaks for itself.
