August 29 - Next - Stop Fayetteville

The Graceland Record import-label announced the release of the 3 CD set "Next - Stop Fayetteville" containing performances from August 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 1976 as recorded from the audience at the Cumberland County Memorial, Fayetteville, NC.

From the press-release:
We all have said it once or twice, “You should have been there, it was amazing, and you should have heard it. Wow! Guess what… You can, really? Yes! Graceland Records label managed once again a rare momentum. This time it’s not just one show, but 3 complete and previously unreleased concerts. They were not available in any form – until now!

Rumours lingered about only a few songs he sang on the 3th of August 1976, but nobody heard it since that day. Nothing was known about these 3 concerts, no recorded evidence, no track listings available, too. Just rumours. These 3 concerts are definitively rare and also very good, for the hot summer of 1976!

Highlights: All 3 Concerts!
On August 3rd, Elvis is in good mood and the audience really joins in. Elvis loves it and interacts tremendously! Wow! Best moments of this show: America The Beautiful (with reprised last part), Love Letters, Hawaiian Wedding Song and very rare (unusual for summer of 1976) performance of An American Trilogy!

On 4th, Elvis was looking forward to perform again and he gave a hell of show, playing off the roof. Great moments: And I Love You So, America The Beautiful (with reprised last part) and two full performances of Hurt.

The August 5th was closing show of whole tour and last ever Elvis show in Fayetteville. Elvis makes sure the people from Fayetteville will remember that he was there, giving another fantastic performance. Best songs: America The Beautiful (with reprised ending), Jailhouse Rock, Love Letters and Hurt (with reprised last part).

Speaking about somewhat up and down shows of summer '76, this is certainly Elvis at his best. Those 3 shows are definitely „up” and far from being „down”.

These rare audience recordings came from a non fan, who recorded it since he believed it was historical moment. At Graceland Records we are very grateful since these are almost beyond par the best concerts of the 1976 Bicentennial tour, I very good sound !

This special summer set is presented in 3CD-digipack, in slipcase, with great 44-page booklet filled with many rare photos (some are presented for the very first time) of Elvis on stage in Fayetteville.
You can't go wrong with this set. If you know the Graceland Records releases, you’ll will love this !

August 24 - Elvis On The Charts, Forever!

U.S. Postal Service customers snapped up enough copies of the service’s exclusive new “Elvis Presley Forever” compilation, released last week in conjunction with the new Elvis Presley Forever postage stamp, to put it at No. 11 in its first week on Billboard’s 200 Albums chart.

The CD is also at #7 on the Top Album Sales Chart, a new entry on the Top Country Albums Chart at #2 and #1 on the Top Rock Albums Chart. Elvis Presley is also No.31 on the Artist 100 Chart.

The 18-track CD, which sold 27,000 copies last week, spans Presley’s career from his 1954 Sun Records recording “That’s All Right Mama,” through his early-1970s hits “Burning Love” and “The Wonder of You,” and includes previously unissued versions of “If I Can Dream” and “What Now My Love.” It also includes such Presley signature hits as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Return to Sender,” “Viva Las Vegas” and “Suspicious Minds.”

The CD should have entered the Top 10, at positionS #8, #9 or #10 but the so-called Billboard 200 Album Chart has new rules, since last November, which give added points when songs included in a given CD, or album, are requested, and downloaded. The Elvis CD was bumped off from say, positions.

It’s the highest debut for a Presley album in a dozen years, since his “2nd to None” album debuted at No. 3 in 2003. “Elvis Presley Forever” is being sold at Postal Service locations and online for $9.99.

Back On The Market

Elvis Presley's Palm Springs honeymoon retreat is back on the market with its price slashed by over 25 percent. Last year, the honeymoon hideaway was listed for $9.5 million, a number which has now dropped to $6.93 million.

Elvis purchased the home in 1967 for $21,000 and spent his honeymoon with Priscilla Presley there.

The 4,695 modernist home, designed by William Krisel, includes dining and living rooms, a bar, a breakfast bar, four bedrooms, along with five bathrooms. The property features a pool, a tennis court and a fruit orchard.

Memphis Music Hall of Fame Grand Opening

Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore, country-pop hit maker Charlie Rich, Stax soul sensations Sam & Dave, and modern day megastar Justin Timberlake are among the latest inductees to the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. Blues songstress Alberta Hunter, Booker T & the MGs drumming legend Al Jackson, Jr., and piano great Memphis Slim round out the 2015 class, which was announced on Friday evening.
The announcement doubled as the official grand opening for the Hall of Fame’s location on the second floor of the Hard Rock building near Beale Street. Though the Hall opened its doors at the end of July, Friday marked the formal celebration of the $1.3 million 4,800-sq foot hall space, which is operated by the Rock and Soul Museum.
The presentation featured appearances by Mayor A C Wharton, and executives from Sun Studios, the Blues Foundation, the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission and Royal Studios.
The 2015 inductees will be officially enshrined during ceremonies held October 17 at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. The seven member class will join 47 previous inductees — including B.B. King, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding and others — bringing the total number of hall members to 54.
Sun Records was well represented with both Scotty Moore and Charlie Rich among this year’s group.
“Charlie Rich had the last big hit on Sun Records with ‘Lonely Weekends’ and he’s a true Memphis music great,” said Sun Studios executive Jayne Ellen Brooks. “And Scotty Moore ... when people think of the classic Sun sound, it’s his guitar playing that defines that. So we’re really excited to see them honored.”

Aside from Timberlake, Scotty Moore, and Sam Moore, the rest of the class will be honored posthumously. Family members of all the late inductees are expected to be part of the October ceremonies. Jackson, who died in 1975, will be celebrated in October with “40 Years of Snap,” a multi-day event celebrating Jackson’s life presented in conjunction with the Soulsville Foundation and world renown drummer Steve Jordan.

August 19 - Don't Ask Forever

An expanded version of Joyce Bova's excellent 1994 memoir, "Don't Ask Forever: My Love Affair With Elvis", has just been released this week as an eBook. The original print version isn't too easy to find and often sells for a high price, so this option will appeal to those fans who want some further and detailed first-hand information on what Elvis was doing in the early 1970s. Of greatest interest to most people will be the author's statement that the book contains "...dozens of digitally enhanced color photographs. Many of them are new and were not in the original book..."

Description:
In this revised and updated version of her 1994 hardcover, Joyce Bova has written an additional chapter, which most revealingly chronicles her personal life before and after Elvis. She also discusses the Presley/Nixon meeting and reiterates the real reason behind Elvis’s visit to Washington, D.C. Additionally, there are dozens of digitally enhanced color photographs. Many of them are new and were not in the original book, along with some that were. She has added a postscript divulging some events she neglected to include in the hardcover, as well as a very touching P.P.S.

Joyce is an identical twin. Elvis was born an identical twin. Joyce shares her innermost thoughts, and Elvis’s, about his conflicts in coping with the absence of his twin and how severely it impacted his life.

August 18 - Onondaga Nights

The Straight Arrow import-label announced the release of "Onondaga Nights", a double CD set containing recordings from the July/August 1976 Bicentennial tour.

From the press-release:
Following the remarkable success of our „From The Rick Rennie Mastertapes“ series, it is time to move on to yet another exciting project. Straight Arrow is pleased to announce this new 2CD set, featuring two concerts from the July/August Bicentennial tour, in topnotch audience recorded quality. It was somewhat problematic tour and especially at the end of July and first days of August, Elvis' voice was affected by some kind of laryngitis. Nevertheless, the two concerts from Onondaga War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse are examples of two solid Presley concerts, with Presley sounding clear and enthusiastic, and in good voice. Both shows were taken directly from recently found original audience-recorded mastertapes. The July 25th, 1976 show was released in 2002 on a CD called „Stormin’ Syracuse“ from an inferior and incomplete (14 minutes missing!) source. The July 27th show is previously unreleased. Every second was digitally restored, every click manually removed, every drop-out fixed to achieve optimal listening pleasure. Ask your local dealer for samples to judge for yourself!

This special release is presented in a de-luxe double digipack, accompanied by a 24-page booklet filled with many professional photos from July 27th and positive press reviews of both shows. Photos from July 25th are extremely rare (amateurish snapshots only). A couple of them have been added in spite of problematic quality, for historic reasons.

August 17 - Beats By Elvis

DesignCrowd, a crowdsourcing marketplace for freelance designers, asked its 475,000 users from across the globe to Photoshop the world's 'most famous and missed pop culture icons' into modern advertisements and campaigns as a part of its recent contest.

The winning design was created by Joel Krebs, a 29-year-old graphic designer from Salem, Oregon, who used his photo editing skills to imagine Elvis Presley modeling a pair of red Beats by Dre headphones. Other entries with Elvis Presley have him advertise for H&M, jeans and kitchen appliances.

Audrey Hepburn having breakfast at McDonald's and Marilyn Monroe using her star power to market Louis Vuitton handbags are just two of the playful campaigns from a unique photo project that reimagines beloved pop culture icons from previous eras as stars of today's ads.

Yvonne Graig Died

Yvonne Craig passed away at her home in Pacific Palisades, surrounded by her immediate family and comforted by Hospice yesterday night. She died from complications brought about from breast cancer that had metastasized to her liver. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Aldrich, her sister Meridel Carson and nephews Christopher and Todd Carson.

Yvonne Craig began her theatrical career as the youngest member of The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and toured for three years when she was accidentally discovered by John Ford’s son Patrick and cast for the lead in the movie The Young Land.

This was quickly followed by many years of film and television including two movies with Elvis Presley (It Happened at the World’s Fair and Kissin Cousins). However, she is probably best known for originating the role as Batgirl in the 1966 TV series of Batman, or for her character “Marta” from the third season of Star Trek.

August 16 - Elvis Left The Building, 38 Years Ago

Today marks the 38-year anniversary of Elvis Presley's passing on August 16, 1977. The “King of Rock and Roll” was found dead Aug. 16, 1977, at his “Graceland” home in Memphis, Tennessee, at age 42.

Elvis Presley became a legend with his baritone voice and songs such as "Hound Dog," "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Blue Suede Shoes." By the time Presley was 30, he had become the highest-paid singer in the history of the business at the time. In his obituary, the New York Times noted that his "blatant sexuality redefined popular music."

August 15 - Elvis Christmas & New Year

Due from the Music Digital label on October 23, 2015 is a 3 CD entitled “Elvis Christmas & New Year”.

Candlelight Vigil 2015

More than 30.000 fans gathered at Graceland for a candlelight vigil in honor of Elvis Presley.

Lisa Marie Presley, her two twin daughters and Priscilla Presley stood on stage and thanked them for the vigil. The there of this year was 'Echoes of Love'. Priscilla said it was the first time Lisa Marie's daughters, Finley and Harper, were at the event and she felt it was important to show them what their grandfather meant to people. People in the crowd made signs, memorials and sang along to every Elvis song that was played.
It all led up to Lisa Marie lighting candles for residents who walked the grounds and ended at Elvis's grave. "I wanted him to experience the legacy of Elvis and see it in action. He has given me a lifetime of music and comfort and this is my way of saying thank you," she said.
Those at the ceremony said it reminded them of a time that Elvis brought people together.

August 14 - Vinyl Dreams

Due from Sony Legacy US is a vinyl double album edition of the  “If I Can Dream” release. This set is due November 6, 2015.

New Box Set In The Works?

Posted on the FECC forum: "Just heard Roger Semon, Jon Jackson and Rob Santos on Elvis Radio. They said they had a big announcement to make about a mammoth box set that was being worked on. I thought for sure it was going to be Elvis On Tour. Nope. They're working on a project to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Elvis' RCA contract. The set will include replicas of every album released in Elvis' lifetime and a 300 page book. No word on how much this will cost yet."

Auction Results

With over 40,000 fans in town for Elvis Week celebrating the life and career of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll at Graceland, music fans and collectors in Memphis and around the world participated on site and online in hopes of going home with a piece of Elvis history at the third “Auction at Graceland,” which brought over $950,000 this evening.  Presented by Graceland Auctions, the auction was the largest and most comprehensive auction yet held at the Graceland Archive Studio.  All of the items in the auction were from third-party collectors and none of the items included in the auction came from the treasured Graceland Archives.

Bob Johnson dies at 83

Bob Johnston, who produced iconic albums from Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen and others, has died at 83. He passed on Friday (Aug. 14) while in hospice care in Nashville.

Johnston got his start by writing songs for Elvis Presley and Bill Haley & His Comets. He later became a producer at Columbia Records, at which time he embarked on his creative partnership with Dylan, first producing 1965’s Highway 61 Revisited. He went on to famously produce Blonde on Blonde, followed by 1967’s John Wesley Harding, 1969’s Nashville Skyline, 1970’s Self Portrait and New Morning. It was on Nashville Skyline that Dylan opened “To Be Alone With You” by asking Johnston, “Is it rolling, Bob?”

Johnston also served as producer on Johnny Cash’s prison albums, At Folsom Prison and At San Quentin; Simon & Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme; and Leonard Cohen’s Songs From a Room and Songs of Love and Hate. He also worked with the Byrds, Loudon Wainwright III, the Waterboys, Willie Nelson and many more. In later years Bob Johnston claimed that songs still credited to his wife Joy Byers were actually co-written, or solely written by himself.[4] He has cited old "contractual reasons" for this situation. The songs in question include Timi Yuro's 1962 hit "What's A Matter Baby", plus at least 16 songs for Elvis Presley's films between 1964 and 1968, including "It Hurts Me", "Let Yourself Go" and "Stop, Look and Listen". Two songs credited to Byers, the aforementioned "Stop, Look and Listen" and "Yeah, She's Evil!" were recorded by Bill Haley & His Comets (the latter song was titled "The Meanest Girl in Town" when Presley recorded it). Presley recorded "The Meanest Girl in Town" on June 10, 1964, while Bill Haley recorded his version a week later, on June 16, 1964.

August 13 - Listen to If I Can Dream

Various tracks of the new “If I Can Dream” album are becoming available. The on-line Elvis Express radio station played two tracks. On the Rolling Stone magazine site the title track is available.

The record's first single, exclusively streaming here, is "If I Can Dream," the plea for a better world that Presley sang as the closing number of his legendary '68 Comeback Special. In the context of that performance, the song came off as a dramatic showstopper. The updated track, which adds some tasteful strings and a smart horn arrangement that beefs up the one on the original, isn't a different so much as a fuller version of the song.

August 12 - Return To the Stamp

The latest addition to the U.S. Postal Service’s Music Icon postage series features a 1955 photo of the singer taken by William Speer. It’s surrounded by the rock-and-roll superstar’s signature, in gold, and the words “Forever” and “USA” in the corner. Between those words is a gold crown, a reference to Presley’s nickname, The King.

Priscilla Presley, Postmaster General Megan Brennan and Elvis fans gathered on the front lawn of Graceland on Wednesday for the official Elvis Forever Stamp Dedication Ceremony.

The Presley stamp is the first Music Icon stamp in 2015. Other icons honored in the past few years include Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Jimmy Hendrix. The new stamp, available at certain post offices around the country, is Presley’s second. The Postal Service previously honored Presley on a stamp in 1993. The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum calls that stamp the most popular U.S. commemorative stamp of all time.

The new stamp, part of the U.S. Postal Services' Music Icons series, goes on sale today August 12, along with the Sony Music’s RCA/Legacy Recordings CD "Elvis Forever."

August 11 - Poplar Markers

Today at 10am local time a marker at the former famous record store Poplar Tunes on Poplar Avenue in Memphis was unveiled. It was here where Elvis listened to many records in his youth, and also the place where the first Elvis record ever was sold in 1954. The record was opened since 1946 until a few years ago.
Another historical marker was unveiled at Lauderdale Courts, the address where Elvis and his family lived after they moved from Tupelo.

August 10 - Taking Care of Elvis

For 38 years, Letetia Henley Kirk kept silent about her years with Elvis Presley. That changes Monday when she releases her book, “Taking Care of Elvis … Memories with Elvis as His Private Nurse and Friend.”

She lived on the grounds at Graceland, Elvis’ home, with her husband and two young daughters from 1972 until 1983 and often traveled with Elvis on tour. The book is a collection of short stories about her life around Elvis and his family and includes dozens of previously unpublished photos.

“He was not only my patient but a good friend,” said Kirk, who is 73. “That’s why I didn’t want to write a book all these years. I felt like he wouldn’t have written a book about me if it had been the other way around.”

She changed her mind after a friend convinced her to attend an event during Elvis Week last August in Memphis. She talked to many of the fans, especially the Europeans, who descend on Graceland each year to commemorate the death of Elvis on Aug. 16, 1977. “I realized how hungry the fans are for stories about what life was like during a normal day at Graceland,” Kirk said by phone Wednesday. “They already know the stories about drugs and sex and life on the road. They want to know what Elvis was like at Graceland during his private time. “That’s what this book is, light-hearted stories of my memories and experiences with Elvis.”

She was hired at The Medical Group in Memphis, where she worked for 40 years. About 1968 she met Elvis when he came to the clinic for treatment of saddle sores from riding horses. She became his regular nurse when Elvis came to the clinic, and that led to her move to Graceland in 1972.

“Elvis said he would put a trailer behind Graceland for me and my family to live in so I could take care of him and his daddy and grandmother,” Kirk said. “I told him I wasn’t going to be trailer trash for nobody. So he hired my husband, Tommy Henley, to do security and take care of the grounds and keep his toys running. Elvis had his way of getting what he wanted, and I’m glad he did.”

Letetia was working at the clinic on Aug. 16, 1977 when her husband called and told her to “get home quick.” She jumped in her car and saw the ambulance on Elvis Presley Boulevard as it raced Elvis to the hospital. She drove through the front gate of Graceland and learned what happened. Elvis was dead at age 42.

“I was in total disbelief,” she said. “I never dreamed something like that would happen. I was worried because Lisa was there. It was horrific for days. I still get emotional about it, and the book was very hard to write because of that emotional journey.”

She said major publishers wanted her story but insisted on using ghostwriters to produce the book. She didn’t trust them. So she wrote the stories, and her sister-in-law typed them. She chose to self publish in Memphis with Wimmer, a division of Mercury Printing Co.

August 8 - the Suit Has Left The Auction

On August 13, the third Graceland Auction will be held during Elvis Week in Memphis. More than 174 items would be presented for sale, making it the largest and most comprehensive auction yet held on the grounds of Graceland.

The item that was getting the most publicity and driving the media postings, Elvis' "Starburst" Jumpsuit, estimated at $100,000-150,000, has been suddenly withdrawn from this week's Graceland Authenticated auction.

Lot #39 was removed from the catalog, it was supposed to be the highlight of the evening. Since late July interesting bidders are able to bid online on the items from the catalog. Already four bids were made on the jumpsuit. The current price achieved was 112,000 dollar. EPE removed Lot # 39 from the online catalogue. No official explanation has so far been published.

New Statues

Two new Elvis Presley statues have been unveiled in Tupelo MS, at the birthplace of Elvis Presley. The first one is entitled "Elvis Becoming" showing an 11-year old Elvis, sitting on a milk crate with a guitar in his lap,  dreaming about the future.
The second statue is named "Elvis The Entertainer". and  stands 7-feet tall and shows Elvis with his arms extended and his head looking skyward. Both statues are created by sculptor Michiel VanderSommen.

Tupelo and Elvis Presley Birthplace wants to attract more tourists and Elvis fans to Tupelo and doing many efforts to achieve that.

August 05 - If I Can Dream Press-release

Here is the press-release for the new Elvis Presley CD "If I Can Dream" that focuses on Presley's voice with new orchestration from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra  and several guest performances.

The press-release:
A new CD scheduled for release in October will unite the music of Elvis Presley with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on songs like "Burning Love" and "Love Me Tender."

The album, announced Tuesday, also features a duet with Michael Buble on "Fever" and appearances by the singers Il Volo and guitarist Duane Eddy. The orchestra adds its backing to original tracks recorded by Presley, who died in August 1977.

"This is right down the alley for Elvis," said Priscilla Presley, the late singer's former wife. "This is something he would have loved to do."

Presley said the disc, "If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra," was conceived during discussions she had with producer Don Reedman while she was in London acting in a play two years ago. She admitted initial skepticism, since her role with Elvis' estate requires her to sift through a lot of lousy ideas for use of his name or music.

But it grew on her, and when Elvis' former Las Vegas conductor approached her with a similar idea last year, she saw it as validation. The disc, recorded in London's famed Abbey Road studio, is set to come out Oct. 30.

While Elvis was obviously known best for rock 'n' roll, he had a large music collection that encompassed many different styles, she said. And he loved the sound of an orchestra.

"Knowing him, he wanted bigness, he wanted fullness, he wanted drama," she said. "His manager at the time, Col. Parker, said 'just have Elvis singing, that's all the people want.' But onstage, he surrounded himself with the music that influenced him — gospel singers, an orchestra, a rock band. People didn't get that."

She and Reedman obviously include some well-known Presley songs, like "In The Ghetto" and "It's Now or Never." But they also wanted some songs that may be overlooked in his catalog, like Neil Diamond's "And the Grass Won't Pay You No Mind" or a version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

The new disc will add to what is already one of the most active and successful entertainment estates, largely through the work of Priscilla and daughter Lisa Marie Presley. Forbes magazine, in its annual list of earnings by dead entertainers, said Presley's estate earned $55 million for the year ending October 2014. That's second to Michael Jackson.

In 2013, Presley's intellectual property rights were sold to Authentic Brands Group, signaling a new activism with the estate. Priscilla Presley also said she's pleased with the work of Sony Legacy, the label that has taken control of packaging Presley's music.

"Elvis was a risk-taker," she said. "If we kept everything status quo, how do we bring him into the future? How do we bring him current with this generation? How do we move on and continue the legacy? We're not going to let that happen."

UK Version

Listed on Amazon UK is a 4 CD set for “If I Can Dream” with October 30, 2015 as the release-date. It appears that Sony Music will also release a real single for the “If I Can Dream” project. Amazon UK lists a seven inch vinyl single coupling “If I Can Dream” with “Bridge over Troubled Water” with October 23, 2015 as the release-date.

Documentary

The release will tie in with a new documentary on Elvis this Autumn called Elvis And Me, starring Joanna Lumley. The show will see the actress travel to Graceland and meet some of Elvis’ closest surviving friends and family in order to uncover "the man behind the myth".

Direct From Graceland: Elvis at the O2

If I Can Dream is part of this year's ongoing 80th birthday celebration of Elvis, which also sees the release of The Complete '60s Albums Collection Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 on iTunes this week (August 7) and the launch of "Direct From Graceland: Elvis at the O2" on DVD.
