August 12 - Return To the Stamp

The latest addition to the U.S. Postal Service’s Music Icon postage series features a 1955 photo of the singer taken by William Speer. It’s surrounded by the rock-and-roll superstar’s signature, in gold, and the words “Forever” and “USA” in the corner. Between those words is a gold crown, a reference to Presley’s nickname, The King.

Priscilla Presley, Postmaster General Megan Brennan and Elvis fans gathered on the front lawn of Graceland on Wednesday for the official Elvis Forever Stamp Dedication Ceremony.

The Presley stamp is the first Music Icon stamp in 2015. Other icons honored in the past few years include Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Jimmy Hendrix. The new stamp, available at certain post offices around the country, is Presley’s second. The Postal Service previously honored Presley on a stamp in 1993. The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum calls that stamp the most popular U.S. commemorative stamp of all time.

The new stamp, part of the U.S. Postal Services' Music Icons series, goes on sale today August 12, along with the Sony Music’s RCA/Legacy Recordings CD "Elvis Forever."
