September 30 - A Golden Release

The French RDM-Edition record label released the latest CD in their 'Mono II Stereo' Elvis CD series, 'Golden Elvis'. This CD features the first two volumes in Elvis' 'Golden Records' series in newly created Stereo mixes.

Publicity stated
: The Elvis Golden Records series has proven very popular with long-time fans and casual buyers alike over the years, with the first two volumes perfectly covering Elvis' first major period of success. 24 major hits were collected on the two original albums, providing an excellent showcase for the Rock 'n' Roll years.

However, while this period will always be associated with the rockers who rose to the top of the charts, the versatility that we now associate with Elvis' illustrious career was already evident in the ballads and country tunes.

With these two albums, presented here in stereo for the first time, Elvis' '50s hits are now ready to be rediscovered!

Go to the >>> RDM-Edition website to listen or pre-order the CD for just 15,00 Euro!

Elvis Presley is featured on the cover of issue 79 of the Yours Retro magazine. Inside you’ll find an article on Elvis' manager.

Publicity stated: A controversial figure, Colonel Tom Parker looked after the interests of Elvis Presley from his earliest singles to his untimely death. History paints him as either the genius mastermind behind The King’s success or a greedy moneygrubber who drove the singer to an early grave. We explore the evidence to get to the truth of his relationship with Elvis.

Kris Kristofferson Died

Kris Kristofferson, who attained success as both a groundbreaking country music singer-songwriter and a Hollywood film and TV star, died. He was 88. Rest In Peace Kris Kristofferson and thank you for your great music.

Kristofferson, who has an English degree from Oxford, transformed lyrics into literature, elevating the craft to a legitimate American art form in a way few had done before. Part Romantic poet, part folk troubadour, part country-music storyteller and part "outlaw".

Elvis recorded several songs by Kris Kristofferson, including 'For the Good Times', 'Help Me Make it Through the Nigh' and 'Why Me Lord'.

In 1977, co-billed with Barbra Streisand, he won a Golden Globe Award as a dissolute rock star in the third version of 'A Star Is Born', a role Barbara Streisand had hoped Elvis would play.

A 2004 inductee in the Country Music Hall of Fame, Kristofferson received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 2015. He also won 3 Grammy Awards.

Talking about Elvis Kristofferson said: "I was an Elvis fan growing up. Elvis was a force of nature. He was the first white guy who could sing black songs and sing them right. I think it just blew everybody away. It's like Ray Charles (laughing) being the first pop artist to sing hank Williams. It's a particular kind of soul. Nobody would have dared to sing a Little Richard song like Elvis had and try to get the spirit of Little Richard in there. (laughs) But Elvis could and he did on 'Rip It Up' and 'Tutti Fruiti'.

The first time I heard Elvis' music was when I was in college. I was driving across California and I stopped at some truck stop and I heard this thing on the radio and I said, 'Who's that?' And the waitress said, 'Oh God, that's Elvis', like I was the stupidest thing goin' (laughs). But it was his first record and I haven't been the same since then.

It's one of the highlights for me to have had Elvis cut my songs. When I was first dreaming of becoming a songwriter I never would have dreamed that Elvis would sing one of my songs but three of them and with so much soul. I feel a lot of gratitude for that." (from 'Writing For The King' by Ken Sharp).

He became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and received multiple lifetime achievement honours, including from The Recording Academy, the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.

Millions restored for Elvis Presley Blvd.

The city of Memphis announced that funding has been reinstated for the long-awaited Elvis Presley Boulevard Road Improvement Project.

The WREG Investigators were the first to report the project had lost federal funding. In their most recent investigation, we learned state lawmakers were working with TDOT and city leaders to get the money back.

According to the City of Memphis in collaboration with Metropolitan Planning Organization, they have announced the reinstatement of full funding of US$8,980,000 for streetscape improvements along the middle segment of Elvis Presley Boulevard.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has confirmed the obligation of this funding, which will facilitate critical infrastructure improvements along Elvis Presley Blvd, from South of Winchester Road to Craft Road,” said the City of Memphis. “This work will continue the progress that has previously been completed on the northern portion of Elvis Presley Blvd.”

The City of Memphis says that the reinstatement funding marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance and improve road conditions. They say they are dedicated to ensuring the successful implementation of the project.

September 25 - Close Encounters with Lisa Marie

Due for release late October, early November 2024 is the book 'Close Encounters of the Elvis Kind' by Victoria R. Crosby.

Publicity stated: This book blends fantasy, fiction and facts in six short stories promoting Elvis' philanthropy and humanitarian spirit.

People Magazine

The promotion for Lisa Marie Presley's biography 'From Here To The Great Unknown' has started. Elvis' daughter graced the cover of the October 7, 2024 edition of the U.S. People magazine with the exclusive article 'My Mother´s Final Wish' in which Riley Keough "reveals the bittersweet process to finish her mom Lisa Marie Presley's memoir".

In the magazine she said: "
Because my mother was Elvis Presley’s daughter, she was constantly talked about, argued over and dissected,” Riley, 35, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive email interview for this week's cover story. “What she wanted to do in her memoir, and what I hope I’ve done in finishing it for her, is to go beneath the magazine headline idea of her and reveal the core of who she was. To turn her into a three-dimensional human being: the best mother, a wild child, a fierce friend, an underrated artist, frank, funny, traumatized, joyous, grieving, everything that she was throughout her remarkable life. I want to give voice to my mother in a way that eluded her while she was alive.

Through the memoir, Riley wants readers to see her mother clearly, perhaps for the first time.
I hope that in an extraordinary circumstance, people relate to a very human experience of love, heartbreak, loss, addiction and family,” she says. “[My mom] wanted to write a book in the hopes that someone could read her story and relate to her, to know that they’re not alone in the world. Her hope with this book was just human connection. So that’s mine.”

Here is a nice personal extract from her new book in which Lisa Marie writes: "Going to Elvis' shows was my favorite thing in the world. I was so proud of him. He would take me by the hand and bring me out onstage, then get walked to wherever his place was on the stage, and I would be taken from him and brought to wherever I was going to be sitting in the audience. Usually with Elvis' father Vernon.

The electricity of those shows. There’s nothing I’ve felt that’s been even close to that feeling, ever. Electrifying is such a generic word, but it really is what it felt like. I loved watching him perform. I had certain songs that I liked — 'Hurt,' and 'How Great Thou Art.' I would ask him to sing those songs for me and he would always say yes.

I did not, however, like having the limelight shone on me or being asked to stand up in front of everybody. In Vegas, during his residency, he introduced Vernon, then looked toward me and I remember thinking, Oh God oh God please don’t.
Lisa, stand up!

It’s not that I wasn’t proud or that I didn’t love him. I just liked the limelight on him, loved it on him. It was not something that came to me inherently. I absolutely abhorred it. But in other less public ways, I loved basking in his fame with him.

In Los Angeles I went to school at John Thomas Dye, up in the hills of Bel Air. I still sometimes drive by it just to remember the day my dad came to a parent-teacher conference. I knew he was coming, and I couldn’t wait. I could feel the teachers’ nervousness and excitement, too. My little student friends were so excited that I got even more excited, everybody was just running around crazy.

Then my dad showed up. Elvis got out of the car and he had on a respectable outfit — black pants and some kind of blouse — but he was also wearing a big, majestic belt with buckles and jewels and chains, as well as sunglasses.

He was smoking a cigar. I met him at the car, and I walked up the walkway with him, and I just remember that feeling of walking next to him, holding his hand."

Actress Julia Roberts will narrate the audiobook for edition of 'From Here To The Great Unknown'. The audio edition will also feature contributions by Riley Keough and fragments from the tapes recorded by Lisa Marie.

Go here to PEOPLE for the full article. You can pre-order the book, that comes out October 8th, 2024, from >>> Amazon (associate link).

Review - New Script, Same Stage

Following the July CD release, the Millbranch import record label released a colorful double LP version of ‘New Script, Same Stage’.

Is it the same script, the same experience or are we in for something new?

Design

Growing up in the CD-era, I still enjoy adding vinyl to my collection, and packages like this are the reason why. Size does matter.

Based on the 1971 single ‘Until It’s Time For You To Go’, the design is both authentic and modern.

Where the CD version was illustrated with “just” tape-boxes, this double LP is the complete shebang! Opening up the LP we get some great shots of our man and a review of the January 26, 1972 Opening Show from the Commercial Appeal. But the real surprise is hidden inside the gatefold cover, beautifully printed inner-sleeves with more reviews and an interview with Elvis, holding magenta colored discs, what a beautiful color!

Tucked in with the LP is a 20-page booklet, designed as a Vegas menu. The full-color booklet covers the concept behind the album, the historical context, including Elvis’ the impact of Elvis’ marriage falling apart, the Vegas season and the rehearsals, and each song in detail. All beautifully illustrated with pictures and memorabilia and articles. This is taking it one step further than the alluring Follow That Dream LP’s as designed by Jimmy Carpenter.

I would have to make a remark regarding the design, it would be that I would have preferred that the opening of the printed inner-sleeves would be at the top, that way the records not on the open side when you take out these nice looking sleeves. But hey, that is nitpicking!

Content

The content of the LP is the same as that of the CD, so here is that section from the CD review:

The first months of 1972 can be characterized by heartburn and hard work for Elvis. Heartburn as his marriage with Priscilla was falling apart, and hard work in the studio recording and rehearsing to prepare for a revamped concert series with an updated setlist. On this set, you hear both: 7 studio recordings and 19 live performances.

The heartbreak is all too audible with songs like ‘The Impossible Dream,’ ‘Until It's Time For You To Go,’ ‘It's Over,’ ‘You Gave Me A Mountain,’ ‘It's Impossible,’ ‘Where Do I Go From Here’, ‘For The Good Times,’ ‘Fool,’ ‘Separate Ways,’ ‘Always On My Mind,’ and ‘I'll Remember You’ as a perfectly chosen closing song for this compilation. Even the slowed-down ‘Hound Dog’ fits in here. ‘(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear’ and the recent hit ‘Burning Love’ (Take 2) almost fall out of place here, but his last No. 1 hit can’t be omitted, of course.

The positive side of Elvis’ sadness is that he channels it through his performances, using his personal pain and turmoil to emotionally charge his performance, both live and in the studio. This still resonates with his audience today, making him the great artist he still is. There isn’t a bad song or performance on this set, although ‘All Shook Up’ is sung a bit too fast and during ‘Hawaiian Closing Theme’ Elvis takes his time saying his goodbyes to the celebrities in the audience instead of properly singing this song, so that one could have been omitted. ‘I'll Remember You’ is a fitting closing song for a tear-jerking compilation like this.

Elvis returned to RCA Studio C. in Hollywood in March 1972 to record new material and rehearse for his live tour, which were to be recorded for the ‘On Tour’ documentary. Looking back now, it is hard to understand how RCA handled these great songs from the March 27th to 29th recording sessions. Some of them became pillars under Elvis’ catalog: ‘Separate Ways,’ ‘For The Good Times,’ ‘Where Do I Go From Here,’ ‘Burning Love,’ ‘Fool,’ ‘Always On My Mind,’ and ‘It’s A Matter Of Time.’ But most of these were scattered away on singles - including my all-time favorite coupling of ‘Always On My Mind’ and ‘Separate Ways,’ which should have been two separate singles! - or on Camden budget releases like ‘Burning Love and Hits From His Movies.’ These recordings, together with a hit like ‘Burning Love’ could have, and should have, been released as an album. What a smash record that could have been!

Recording a contemporary hit like ‘Burning Love’ illustrated that Elvis was still relevant in a changing musical world with artists like the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Marvin Gaye, and Joni Mitchell exploring new musical directions. The fact that some of them attended his 1972 Madison Square Garden shows a few months later is a clear illustration of Elvis’ fame and position as an artist.

So even with new musical trends changing the sound of popular music, our man made his stand with his ability to unite different genres and appeal to a broad audience.

Fortunately, the people from Millbranch stepped in to create this “album that never was” with some great live and studio recordings from early 1972. Thank you, guys!

The concert standards ‘Polk Salad Annie,’ ‘Never Been To Spain,’ ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ ‘Little Sister / Get Back,’ ‘An American Trilogy,’ and of course some of the early fifties hits complete this compilation. Listening to the live performances, you hear that Elvis succeeded in presenting his audience a more serious and solid show, with less chatting. Although he still makes some jokes and makes fun of poor Charlie Hodge in ‘Never Been to Spain,’ “it sounds funny all by himself.”

Looking at the tape-box on the back of the LP it appears that the producers were able to work with a transfer of the original binaural tape of the January 26th Opening Show, mixed to stereo as prepared for a possible release Joan Deary was working on in 1979. According to the tape Dick Bogert was the engineer. The content of this tape, featuring accounts for one-third of this album. The other performances seem to have been added to complete the 1972 compilation.

In the mix Elvis takes center stage, the band backs him there, with the piano a tad to the left, the orchestra further to the left and the backing vocalists on the right side. The bass and drums are very prominent in the mix, more than you would expect, but for me it works in the overall audio-presentation.

With this selection of songs the producers showed that they know their Elvis and his catalogue. They have chosen and mixed the songs cleverly. The live songs have a good 'concert flow, using the applause, the transitions were edited very well.

Deary was working on several projects, the book 'De Musik, Der Mensch, Der Mythos' by Marc Hendrickx shows another 1979 tape-box with binaural mixes, engineered by Dick Bogert from the RCA 'Tape Legends' archive (page 219).

The LP was mastered - by Petrushka at Planet of Sound Mastering - a bit louder, to create a more dynamic sound and it works. These performances sound richer than the FTD release of these performances on the 'Opening Night' CD from the 2001 import record label (1994) and FTD's ‘An American Trilogy’ (2007). The concert was also released by the Memphis Recording Service as 'Elvis: Opening Night 1972' and as 'Las Vegas 1970 And 1973' on the Homespun record label in 2023.

The mix has much detail, you even hear the drumming on the hi-hat. And listen to that 'Trilogy', shivers run down my spine when he sings “hush now baby, your daddy is bound to die.” Overall, the audio on this set, sourced from various concert dates, studio, and overdub sessions, sounds pretty much like a whole, with the live performances nicely flowing from song to song, almost creating a fantasy concert.

‘The Impossible Dream’ sounded a little sharp to my ears; the other tracks sounded great. Good to have the orchestra version of ‘Separate Ways,’ ‘It's A Matter Of Time,’ and ‘Always On My Mind’ together on this set as these were originally done four weeks after the original recording in an overdub session, led by Glenn D. Hardin using a fifteen-piece orchestra consisting of two cellos, six violins, two violas, and four trumpets. They complete the (original) picture.

The orchestral version of ‘Always On My Mind’ would remain officially unreleased until 1985 when it would become the title track of an early RCA Elvis CD release. It hit the charts in 1997 when it was used in a British Airways commercial. ‘For The Good Times’ found a place on the ‘Essential Seventies’ box, but this version of ‘Separate Ways’ still has to be released officially. It has seen various bootleg releases, most recently on the Venus label CD ‘Unedited Masters - Nashville 1970 Revisited’ (2013).

The Vinyl

The magenta colored vinyl looks simply stunning! The LPs are flat and play flawlessly although they were a little static when taken out of the sleeves for the first time, but a soft brush does wonders. The sound is so much fuller and richer (in detail) than the CD, which surprised me a bit as I thought that the silver disc sounded good. So compliments to the audio engineer for the voluminous audio presentation.

Conclusion

Opening a package like this is what makes it fun to be an Elvis fan and collector. A great design, much eye for detail and a strong compilation in a rich audio presentation. The LP is a real upgrade from the CD, so no, it is not simply the same script, the same experience.

In the review for the CD I wrote: “If this compilation was meant to be played, the producers succeeded. It has been in my CD player for a few days now!”. For this LP edition I can only add that these shiny transparent magenta records will make a few more spins before they are returned to their sleeves.

September 24 - Back in L.A. and New Script, Same Stage Vinyl

The Millbranch Music import record label released the two double LPs; 'Back In L.A.' featuring the May 11, 1974 Evening Show, as recorded at the Forum in Los Angeles, California and a vinyl version of the recently released 'New Script, Same Stage' compilation. Both titles are available on colored, black and clear vinyl, limited to 300 copies per color.

Publicity for 'Back In L.A.' stated
: Millbranch Music continues with its ultra-high quality vinyl releases, made for the real fan. 'Back In L.A.' is a 2-LP set with an extra 20-page booklet and printed inner sleeves, containing the legendary evening show at the Forum in Los Angeles, California from May 11, 1974. It comes on black, clear and transparent red colored vinyl.

Elvis’ 1974 LA concert, with Led Zeppelin in the audience, has seen quite a few releases over the past 10+ years, starting with ‘Live in LA’ on the FTD record label in 2011.

Unfortunately the tape ran too slow on this release. Subsequent releases under various labels did not fully resolve the quality issues, as they were sourced from a “low noise” Audio cassette containing a copy of an original reel-to-reel tape.

Although several Import labels attempted to remaster the FTD CD, the first noteworthy release of this concert was on the 'City of Angels' set which featured a direct transfer from the original reel-to-reel tape. The original tape was not in the best condition after being poorly preserved and changing owners a few times. Regrettably, it was not remastered professionally when the 'City of Angels' CD was released.

Thanks to the late Edwin Meijers, a pivotal figure in the 1980s with close ties to Colonel Parker - who at the time needed funds for legal battles - we were able to obtain the original tape. Meijers relationship with Parker facilitated the acquisition of several unique, authentic recordings, now cherished by collectors.

During the production of our 'Kansas City Revisited' album, we were amazed by what could be done to restore these kinds of recordings using modern studio techniques and the expertise of our sound engineer. It inspired us to release this dynamic and historical show from May 1974 once more.

This release includes a 20-page booklet detailing 'Elvis Back in LA' and a bonus section with performances from 1956, 1970, and 1974. We know you will enjoy this great show, which still gets 'A Whole Lotta Love' from the members of Led Zeppelin fifty years later!

Tracks side A: Also Sprach Zarathustra - See See Rider - I Got A Woman / Amen - Love Me - Trying To Get To You - All Shook Up - Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel

Side B: Love Me Tender - Steamroller Blues - Hound Dog - Fever - Polk Salad Annie - Why Me, Lord (With Reprise)

Side C: Suspicious Minds - Introductions - I Can't Stop Loving You - Help Me - An American Trilogy - Let Me Be There (With Reprise)

Side D: Funny How Time Slips Away (With False Start) - Can´t Help Falling In Love - Closing Vamp

Publicity for “New Script, Same Stage” stated: "New Script, Same Stage" is a 2-LP set, available on black, clear and magenta colored vinyl, with an extra 20-page booklet and printed inner-sleeves!

We at Millbranch wanted to create an album that does justice to the recordings made at the beginning of 1972. For the part with the songs from the Opening show of January 26, 1972, we even had the opportunity to work with the original binaural tape and this clearly made an impact on the sound which presents the songs in a sound quality never heard before!

With this impressive LP set featuring original photos coming directly from the negatives (almost perfect for framing!), we want to pay tribute to that turbulent time of the recording sessions where Elvis presented his new show in Las Vegas in January and February with a lot of new songs in his setlist and turned his feelings into music at Hollywood's RCA Studio C, given the fact that his marriage was falling apart at the time.

The result was a very emotional output of music as only Elvis was able to create because he had put his whole heart and feelings into the recordings, probably even meant as a public apology to his lost love. At least, the songs were kind of a statement, done coincidentally or not.

We strongly believe that the songs on our new release fits together very well! Hear Elvis at his best at the early stage of 1972 and make sure you´ll get your copy of our brandnew and very limited Millbranch vinyl release at your favorite dealer!

Destination Louisville

Jon Daly announced the release of the A4-sized, 92-page book '
Destination Louisville - June 26, 1974', co-written by Arjan Deelen and with a contribution from Duke Bardwell.

Publicity stated: You see Elvis before the show, during the concert and after. Many of the photos are close-ups and razor-sharp. Elvis wore his beautiful Peacock costume that was brand new at the time.

During this tour Elvis delivered some great shows and in this book you experience it all. Besides circa 100 previously unpublished colour photos, taken by Ramonda Brady from the front row at Elvis’ Louisville concert on June 26, 1974, this book also features documentation for the show from Colonel Parker's office, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia.

It also includes the heartwarming story of the fan who took these photos from the front row. Duke Bardwell, who was Elvis' bass player at the time, put his memories on paper especially for this book. It has become a special book that gives readers a unique picture of this period.

Pre-orders come with a free vinyl single containing two restored home-recordings of 'Spanish Eyes / Let Me Be The One', recorded April 1974.
