King of Rock 'N' Roll was born 85 years ago today, and this morning, fans from around the world celebrated Elvis' birthday at the annual Birthday Proclamation Ceremony at Graceland with Priscilla Presley, Jerry Schilling, Jack Soden and Joel Weinshanker,
They announced at the proclamation that a new Elvis artifact is now on display at Graceland: his childhood bicycle. Elvis' father, Vernon, purchased the bike for Elvis when he was about 11 years old and it has been stored in the Smokehouse at Graceland for years. The Graceland Archives team had the bike restored, and it's now on display in the Trophy Building.
Sadly for the King’s only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, she won’t be able to bring her twin 11-year-old daughters to the celebration, which was to include a private party at Graceland Wednesday night with Lisa Marie’s mother, Priscilla Presley.
That’s because Lisa Marie Presley, 51, failed to get a judge to sign an emergency order, letting her take the girls, Finley and Harper, out of state. Presley has been caught up in a pretty grueling custody battle with her estranged husband, Michael Lockwood, from whom she filed for divorce in 2016.
Under terms of a standing court order, neither Presley nor Lockwood can take the children out of California without the consent of the other parent or court approval, The Blast reported.
Priscilla talks about Elvis watching the Comeback Special:
Speaking at Elvis' 85th birthday celebrations this month, Priscilla Presley spoke of watching the 1968 special with The King live that Winter. Priscilla, now 74, recalled:
"I was sitting with him in our living room and we were watching the show. It was Sonny West, myself and Charlie Hodge with Elvis. And it was so intense... you couldn't hear a pin drop.
Elvis was literally stuck to that TV and we didn't say anything. He watched the whole entire thing with such intensity, I could feel his nervousness watching it that night. He didn't say a word. Nothing, until after it was over. I could see him a little bit perspiring.
And all of a sudden the phone started ringing and it was all like magic. They were all saying, 'Oh my god, Elvis was really great...what a night!' When it came out in the papers it told all the ratings of how well the show did and it was like a big sigh of relief for him. But, y'know he was nervous."
