April 30 - Elvis The King of the Rings Released

Paul Belard's latest 250-page photo-journal 'Elvis The King of the Rings Volume 1' has been published.

From the press- release

Elvis liked expensive things: cars, motorcycles, clothes, and jewelry. His jewels befitted a king. He wore sumptuous pendants hung on heavy gold chains; huge and lavish rings set with rubies, sapphires, lapis lazuli, and emeralds; bracelets of gold and precious gems. Like Elvis himself, they were at times dazzlingly tasteful and beautiful, and at other times flashy and ostentatious. Occasionally, he would design the jewels himself, such as the famous TCB - Taking Care of Business - pendant and ring.

He loved to give his possessions away to people close to him, as well as to complete strangers. The value of the item was of no concern to him. An expensive horseshoe ring was designed by Memphis jeweller Lowell Hayes, specifically for Elvis to wear on stage during his televised 'Aloha from Hawaii' performance in 1973. Elvis gave the ring away a few years later. It eventually sold at auction in 2017 for $204,800.

I always wondered why Elvis was giving away so many of his things? Yes, he was rich. He had everything he could want. But plenty of well-to-do people do not give anything away. As a matter of fact, for some enough is never enough. So I remained puzzled. Then I read a book by David Brooks, a journalist and columnist for the New York Times. He offered the thought that happiness that comes from accumulation is fleeting. But but there is another emotion, he calls it joy, that comes from helping others. He writes: "Happiness comes from accomplishments; joy comes from offering gifts. Happiness fades; we get used to the things that used to make us happy. Joy doesn't fade. To live with joy is to live with wonder, gratitude and hope."

The singer Robert Goulet described Elvis' penchant for generosity: "I remember once we sat together backstage for two hours. And he was a charming, delightful man. And at one point I said, "That's a beautiful ring you have there." He said "You like it?" I said, "It's beautiful!" He took it off his hand and put it on mine. He gave me his ring."

Gord Atkinson Died

Canadian radio DJ Gord Atkinson died. He was 94.

In 1957 het introduced Elvis Presley during his evening performance on April 3rd 1957 in Ottawa, Canada and he interviewed him between his shows. He also presented Elvis a scroll from his popular radio-show 'Campus Corner' because Elvis had topped the show's popularity poll for the past year and a half.

From the interview:

Gord Atkinson: No doubt about that now. Elvis, you've certainly even topped the popularity Frank Sinatra had in his heyday. This may seem like a foolish question for a Presley fan to ask - it seems like an obvious answer - but have you, yourself, given any thought to what it is about you that has made you the phenomenal show business personality that you are?

Elvis: I sure have, onlv I don't like to figure it out because I'm afraid if I find out what it is, I might lose it. So I just keep guessing myself.

Gord Atkinson: What about your singing style? Would you say that you are an outgrowth of country music, or the pop field? Or a combination of both?

Elvis: I guess I kind of like 'ern both - more rock and roll than anything else. Rock and roll is actually, you see, what put me over.

Al Schmitt Died

American recording engineer and record producer Albert (Al) Schmitt died. He was 91.

He engineered Elvis Presley’s recording sessions at RCA for his first post-army film 'G.I. Blues', in 1960.

Tupelo Purchases Land Near Elvis Presley Birthplace

The city of Tupelo purchased two plots of land near the Elvis Presley Birthplace for US$70,000, which will now allow the city to own nearly all the property surrounding the birthplace. The Elvis Presley Birthplace Foundation, which manages the day-to-day operations of the birthplace, agreed to contribute $10,000 to the purchase.

The city will now own all property in the general area of the birthplace, except one small plot of land, where a residential house is currently located. April 21 - Review Elvis Day by Day in Graceland Magazine

The German Elvis Presley Gesellschaft reviewed 'Elvis Day By Day 2020' in volume 258 of their Graceland magazine.

The book received four stars! Thank you!

The review by Andreas Pendl noted: The concept is reminiscent of the British 'Elvis Specials' which were published from 1962 to 1985. These books were a kind of best of the "Elvis Monthly" booklet and offered a look back at the past year.

That is what Kees Mouwen does with this yearbook - only with much more extensive research and more detailed information. A very good overview of what happened to Elvis in the past year ... with additional exclusive reviews and pictures.

For more information on the magazine and the fan club visit the >>> Elvis Presley Gesellschaft website.

The book is available at:

For European fans at the >>> Memphis Mansion online shop.

If you want an autographed copy, contact Kees Mouwen at >>> elvis @ xs4all.nl.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Brexit shipping from Europe is expensive. So for a for Elvis fans outside Europe, the book is available through your local Amazon shop.

Volume 4 in the ’Sold Out!’ DVD series was released.

From the press release: More and more people are discovering this phenomenal DVD series, including even Elvis’ own associates and musicians. It’s quite a scoop that Duke Bardwell has written exclusive liner-notes for this new release. Duke, as most of you will know, played bass for Elvis at 181 shows in 1974 an 1975. His wonderfully evocative text truly captures the magic and excitement of Elvis live on stage in the seventies. Duke can be seen in various clips on this release, and usually with a big smile on his face. And now after almost 50 years, that smile is there once again while watching this unique footage.

Sure, 8mm is not perfect, but it was the technology of the time, and though it has its limitations, it now gives us the chance to experience many great moments of Elvis in concert that would otherwise have been lost forever.

This fourth volume focuses on the final years, and it features some of the coolest and most enjoyable 8mm footage out there. Three hours of rare and unreleased clips, all restored by some of the best people in the business. ‘Don’t procrastinate, don’t articulate…’ – and get this gem of a release now.

April 12 - Rock and Roll, Píldoras Y Chicas

Sergio Gaspar Mosqueda published his 172-page Spanish biography ‘Elvis Presley: Rock and Roll, Píldoras Y Chicas’ (‘Rock, Pills and Girls’), volume 5 in his ‘Colección Rock’ series.

Description

In 1954, the young Elvis Presley set foot in a recording studio for the first time: Sun Records, to make a record that he wanted to give to his mother. Producer Sam Phillips was eager to make rock and roll accepted by white audiences, and so he wanted to find an Anglo-Saxon singer with powerful vocal chords to perform pieces written by black musicians. When he listened to Elvis, he knew his search was over.

Various renowned sources, including the work of Peter Guralnick, was consulted in the research for the meticulously written biography.

The Classic Bootleg Collection

Also released was volume 3 in ‘The Classic Bootleg Collection’. featuring the classic bootleg albums ‘That’s The Way It Is’, ‘To Know Him Is To Love Him’, ‘Special Delivery’, ‘Kickin’ Back!’, ‘Rough Cut Diamonds Volume 2’ and ‘Play It Hot’.

From the press release

A sublime 6 CD box set with 6 classic Elvis Presley bootleg albums. Again, there is chosen for some  60's and 70's instead of focusing on one time period. This way all will be served!

There is a big chance your favorite Elvis bootleg album is presented in this boxset. These were the albums in the late 1970's and 1980's that fans were longing for, cause it presented much better (and rarer!) material than Elvis' own record company released in those days.

This stunning box contains miniature albums of the original releases and includes all the original album tracks, digitally remastered and they now sound better than ever before! Still, many of these tracks are unreleased by Elvis' official record company.

Just like on volumes 1 and 2 there are some true gems (or rough cut diamonds) to be found on this set! For example the ‘Rough Cut Diamonds’ LP contained some unique mixes very different to the later released versions.

And the ‘Kickin’ Back!’ LP contained a spliced version of the promised land rehearsal, which resulted in an “alternate” ending. The 1974 rehearsal recordings made their debut on this 1988 LP and the complete rehearsal would not be heard until 7 years later.  Of course the LP also featured the infamous monologue recorded in September 1974 where Elvis speaks out against the press and the maternity lawsuit against him. The show where this speech was taken from would not be heard for almost 9 years later.

The ‘Special Delivery’ LP has always been a controversial album, containing the 2 duet versions of ‘Love Me Tender’ with Linda Ronstadt. Plus another song ‘In My Dreams’ which actually is not sung by Elvis at all. On the other side (literally) it also contained the marvelous unrepaired take 4 of ‘Rags To Riches’.

The album also contained songs like ‘When The Snow Is On The Roses’ and ‘Portrait Of My Love’ not often heard in 1979!

The ‘To Know Him Is To Love Him Album’ is probably the sloppiest edited album of all time, but it did contain some welcome tracks never heard before by most fans (and still partly unissued elsewhere till today).

The Amiga LP ‘That’s The  Way It Is’ and the ‘Play It Hot Album’ do not need any introduction as these are probably some of the first bootleg LP’s in most Elvis collections.

All of these albums are true classics and listening to these will bring up some beautiful memories.
