The weekly global Elvis Presley chart update. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland and The Netherlands the 'Burning Love' Record Store Day release dropped off the charts after just one week. But the latest Memphis Recording Service 4-CD-set 'Las Vegas Summer Festival 1972' made up for that.
Elvis Presley did score his 7th British Phonographic Award for 2023 with a Gold Single Award for 'Hound Dog', so our man still sells in England.
In the United States the 'ELV1S 30 #1 Hits' compilation dropped off the main Billboard 200 Album chart and various other charts. The 'Burning Love' LP made up for that loss a little.

It appears that Elvis' former lead guitarist is (almost) back after a period of serious health problems! The Londen Palladium announced the one night only event 'James Burton and Friends' on June 4, 2023.
Description: “Play it James”. Legendary rock and roll guitaristJames Burton, who will be instantly recognisable to Elvis Presley fans around the world, is to make a rare return to London for a special one-night-only concert event.
One of the most recognised musicians to emerge during North America’s burgeoning rock and roll, rockabilly and country music eras, Burton’s name has since been attached to such legendary artists as George Harrison, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, The Everly Brothers, John Denver, Emmylou Harris, and Merle Haggard, and on 1000s of recordings. His innovative use of banjo strings on his guitar in the 1950s to bend and stretch notes, coupled with his unique ‘chicken pickin’ playing style revolutionised rock, country and pop guitar and continues to inspire and influence artists across all generations to this day.
He holds a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted by long time fan and friend Keith Richards in 2001, and has also been recognised by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
It should come as little surprise then that Burton’s London appearance on 4 June has drawn the participation of many of his fellow musician and artist admirers from around the world. Joining Burton in this special one-off event are Sir Brian May,Van Morrison, Albert Lee, and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, with more surprise guests to be announced. Musical Director Leo Green, along with the Leo Green Orchestra – a fantastic ensemble of topflight musicians and singers, form the supporting cast for this unique event.

From Memphis To Nashville
The STAR record label also released the Deluxe Digipack 'From Memphis To Nashville - Essential Fifties Splices Volume Two'. Publicity stated: The series next volume of the fifties, this time songs from 1953 - 1958. It starts off with some Sun recordings and most sound very different than released before.
The 'Acetate Medley' has been compiled from the first 4 tracks Elvis recorded for private use, "Just listen to his voice ladies and gentlemen". 'Blue Moon of Kentucky' starts off with the slow version and then gets really going once the Master kicks in. 'You're A Hearbreaker' has been edited the intro is different and it really sounds as if we have an Alternate Take.
Just for fun, 'Trying To Get To You' has been sped up and sounds like an attempt Elvis could have done. 'Tomorrow Night' starts of with the original recording and the later 1965 overdubb blends in very nicely, at this moment we leave Memphis and arrive in Nashville. 'I Was the One' has been spliced with all available takes and you can hear Elvis trying out different approaches to the lyrics.
'Ain't That Loving You Baby' was first released in 1985 but here we have the remastered version not released officially yet. Fans of this series know what to expect and will be happy with the new release.

Elvis Country On Stage The Meant to be Played import record label released the CD 'Elvis Country On Stage'.
Publicity stated: It's been a long time since their last release, but it was worth the wait! The series delivers discs not for collecting, but (meant to be) playing. Although most die hard fans will have most (all) of the tracks included, it is a very good collection of Country songs done live and one you will be playing more than once.
As a bonus, you get some stage rehearsals from 1973 as well as the last country song Elvis ever performed; 'I Really Don't Want To Know', taken from his last concert. 'Blue Moon of Kentucky' was the first country song Elvis performed live. The artwork has a nice touch resembling a cool mixture from 'Elvis Country' and 'On Stage' resulting in 'Elvis Country On Stage'. The Tennessee Legislature recognized Jerry Schilling last week in an official resolution praising his accomplishments.
Memphis native, Jerry Schilling, was honored for his many contributions to Tennessee's arts and cultural history and his talents in American music and film history, particularly his time with Elvis Presley as a member of his entourage.
Schilling has served in various positions throughout the arts and entertainment world as a talent manager, author, producer, executive producer and technical advisor on many film and television projects. One of Jerry's most recent film projects was HBO's 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
His invaluable work and devoted contributions to arts and culture in Tennessee and collective knowledge of the King of Rock 'n' Roll will always hold a significant place in music history and in the city of Memphis.
SENATE RESOLUTION 15 By Lamar SR0015 001557 - 1 -
A RESOLUTION to recognize Memphis native Jerry Schilling for his many contributions to the arts and cultural history.
WHEREAS, it is the privilege of the members of this legislative body to honor those enterprising individuals who have long been devoted stewards of arts and culture in Tennessee and beyond; and
WHEREAS, one such individual is Memphis native Jerry Schilling, a noted talent manager, producer, and author who has contributed greatly to American music and film and our collective knowledge of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Schilling was born in the Bluff City on February 6, 1942; his early years were fraught with tribulations, including his mother's passing, several bouts of illness, and economic hardship; and
WHEREAS, his fate began to take a turn in 1954 when, at the age of twelve, he joined a touch football game with some local kids, among them nineteen-year-old Elvis, who cut his first record that same year and who, just two years later, would reach the height of stardom; and
WHEREAS, the two forged a friendship that would last twenty-three years, until the King's untimely passing in 1977; Jerry Schilling has been cited as "one of the few guys who would tell Elvis the truth," and in turn, Elvis grew to respect his opinion as a trusted friend, confidante, and business partner; and
and WHEREAS, though he had set out to become a history teacher, that plan was fortuitously thwarted when he was invited by Elvis himself to join his team in the mid-1960s; Mr. Schilling thus became one of a handful of people working for Elvis at the time, filling in in whatever capacity as the need arose, whether it be as a security guard or simply a companion;
WHEREAS, over the years, he took on more important roles, at one point serving as creative affairs director of Elvis Presley Enterprises, and became one of the members of the "Memphis Mafia," a tight-knit group of Elvis's most loyal and trusted friends who were always in tow, even living at Graceland; and
WHEREAS, in 1974, he left Elvis to manage the Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Billy Joel. He later went on to manage Elvis's daughter, Lisa Marie Presley; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Schilling honed his editing chops working behind the scenes on such projects as the acclaimed 1972 documentary Elvis On Tour and lent his expertise to such television projects as biographies on Brian Wilson and Sun Records chief Sam Phillips; his best known projects include Elvis & Nixon (2016), for which he was an executive producer; Heartbreak Hotel (1988), for which he was an executive advisor; and Great Balls of Fire! (1989), for which he was a technical advisor; and
and WHEREAS, Jerry Schilling is also an author; the last holdout of Memphis Mafia to pen a book about his friend, he wrote Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong Friendship with Elvis Presley (2006) in collaboration with writer Chuck Crisafulli; the book is a frank, warm, and candid memoir of his life with Elvis and did a great deal to elucidate the humanity of the beloved icon;
WHEREAS, Mr. Schilling continued to give back to his hometown when he was tapped to serve as CEO of the Memphis Music Commission, a position he held for over three years; and
WHEREAS, most recently, Jerry Schilling saw himself portrayed on the silver screen by Luke Bracey in Baz Luhrmann's 2022 film Elvis, which further memorialized Mr. Schilling's significant role in music history; and
WHEREAS, although he currently resides in California, Mr. Schilling will forever be a son of Tennessee, and it is most fitting that we honor his invaluable work over the years; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that we honor and commend Jerry Schilling for his many contributions to the arts and cultural history as a talent manager, producer, and author, extending our best wishes for much continued success and happiness.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy.
The Reel Trax import record label released the double CD-set ‘Come What May - The Lost 1966 Album’. A LP edition is due later this year.
Publicity stated: Many people, in concerns of music, sports, politics and many more genres just love to ask: What If…..? Elvis fans do that as well! So let´s get to the point: What If RCA had released an LP album like our brand new Reel Trax release in November of 1966?
We don't know for sure of course, but we assume that the view on Elvis' career in the sixties would probably be significantly different. But since this obviously did not happen the way we wish it had, Elvis is mainly being remembered in this decade as a celluloid artist. His last studio album that had nothing to do with “typical” movie songs had been 'Pot Luck' and it had been released way back in 1962. In the meantime the majority of Elvis' album releases had clearly been dominated by his movie soundtracks (which showed in releases on singles and EPs as well – plus we all know that there could have been that so-called “lost album” in 1963, which never materialized).
It seemed to be a perfect formula to maximize financial success by releasing movie soundtrack after movie soundtrack. Even considering taking the risk to lose the credibility of the performer, who once was known a “rebel”, a man who changed just about everything in contemporary pop music business, just ten years earlier.
Lost Album, Missed opportunity?
Tracks 1 to 12 are taken from the forthcoming Reel Trax vinyl release 'Come What May' (LSP 3718), which deals with a so-called “Lost Album” theory for November 1966. All other songs used for this CD release are mainly based on international 45 RPM single releases of 1966. While some of the titles are well known single release from RCA (like 'Tell Me Why' and 'Blue River'), the 'Girl Happy' songs 'Do Not Disturb' and 'Spring Fever' were single releases in India. The 'Paradise Hawaiian Style' LP tracks 'Drums Of The Islands', 'This Is My Heaven', 'House Of Sand' and the movie title track were only released on single releases in the Philippines (on the RCA record label).
By the mid-1960's it was time to reflect on Elvis' musical career, to think about changes, to have respect for new influences in terms of songs and sounds. History learns us that this never happened. And still, there were opportunities to bring back some of that old magic from a couple of years earlier. One of those "chances" was in May 1966 when Elvis returned to Studio B in Nashville for a recording session with enough material for two albums! One of them would become the Grammy-Award winning gospel album'How Great Thou Art' The other one could have been similar to the one you hold in your hands. Elvis was highly motivated to do the sessions and he did a mighty good job on the material, which consisted of gospel songs and well chosen covers ranging from Folk to Rhythm and Blues titles.
The 'How Great Thou Art' LP became a Gold Album and Elvis was very proud of it. But what about the remaining songs from the May 1966 sessions? What happened to the possible second album? Well, there was no second album! The songs, which could have been used for another pretty solid and more artistic album, were scattered over various singles and used as bonus songs on various soundtrack albums. Again we would like to ask the question "what if ...?"
To give these recordings a new fresh ambience, the best, and most interesting Alternate Takes for the songs have been chosen for this release. The second disc comprises more complete and partly Spliced Outtakes of the titles from the fisrt disc. Discover a stand-out and never before released version of 'God's Gonna Cut 'Em Down' (also known as 'Run On') which features a splice of Takes 1 and 6. Also included are the original demos of four songs sung by Bobby "Red" West, two of them were even written by him!

The Follow That Dream collectors label released the April 2023 releases: the 3-CD set 'Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden' and the book / CD / vinyl set 'The Making Of Blue Hawaii' by David English and Pal Granlund. The first copies were shipped last weekend and arrived at the first dealers.
Description 'Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden': After Elvis completed a hugely successful and sold-out tour filmed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for the 1972 documentary 'Elvis On Tour' in April, confidence was high in the Elvis camp with all four shows at New York's Madison Square Garden sold out, as did the rest of the June tour.
Any reservations Elvis might have had about performing in the Big Apple were quickly dispelled as the noise from the MSG crowd was deafening. The New York Times 'Arts and Leisure' headline summing up the triumph read 'Like a Prince From Another Planet'.
Elvis As Recorded at Madison Square Garden with the evening show of June 10 was a rush release later in the month and sold a million copies in the US in just a few weeks. Total US sales to date exceed 3 million, achieving triple platinum status. The afternoon show was eventually released by RCA as An Afternoon In The Garden in 1997, 20 years after Elvis' death.
This belated FTD 50th Anniversary Edition celebrates these legendary shows with remixed versions of both shows by Memphis recording engineer Matt-Ross Spang. Disc 3 contains the original press conference, recorded at the New York Hilton on June 9th.
Packaged in our 8-inch 'Sessions' slipcase, this deluxe 3-CD includes a 20-page color booklet, great photos, memorabilia, press conference transcript and reminiscences of the late Phil Gelormine.

Gordon Lightfoot died
The Canadian singer-songwriter died. He was 84.
Lightfoot’s deceptively simple songs fused folk with pop and country rock. Elvis Presley recorded his compositions 'For Lovin' Me' and 'Early Morning Rain'. The latter song became John Wilkinson's signature song during the introductions of the band when Elvis was on tour.
From Paul Simpson's spotlight on 'Early Morning Train' on the Elvis Information Network: Elvis Presley’s cover of 'Early Morning Rain' has exerted an enduring appeal, with composer Gordon Lightfoot going as far as to call it his favourite cover of one of his songs.
The 1971 album 'Elvis Now' is still treasured by one Elvis fan. Gordon Lightfoot admitted that, in the 1970s, he hadn’t paid much attention to the King’s cover of his classic song Early Morning Rain. “It didn’t really register until after he was gone, but I loved the job he did on it. I have it right here on my desk. I keep it here. It’s 'Elvis Now'.”
Lightfoot's great regret is that he never met Elvis. He went to one concert hoping to meet up, “There were 18,000 people at the show but by the time I got back there to meet him, a voice said: ‘Elvis has left the building'. I had an appointment! But there were too many people around.”

R.I.P. Gordon, and thank you for the music!

Published by Future Publishing is the 132-magazine 'The Story of Elvis'.
Publicity stated: Forty-five years after the premature death of Elvis Presley, still the biggest-selling musical artist in history according to several metrics, millions of us are still fascinated by him. Why is this?
Well, consider this. Elvis was born in an environment of extreme poverty that would seem completely alien to most of us in 2022. With zero privilege and only his natural talent to sustain him, he rose to the status of global superstar by his mid-twenties, when the world lay at his feet.
What could possibly go wrong? Only everything, it turned out. Dogged by a laughably bad film career, emasculated by national service in the US Army and unlucky in love, Elvis found himself on a destructive path that ultimately led to his self-destruction at the age of only 42. Along the way, he morphed from the ultimate rockabilly bad boy into a harmless family favorite, and finally into a doomed shadow of his glorious former self.
This is why we love reading about Elvis, as you’re about to do in this new and essential analysis of his life. How and why did he throw it all away? The lessons here are that talent and charisma will take you a long way, but too much money and existential futility will take you all the way back again… all the way to the end of Lonely Street, in fact.
Enjoy the Story of Elvis. There will never be another musician like him. Celebrate his life with us.
Emiel Maier posted the May 2023 Video Elvis News Report.
