The Overton Park Shell
The Levitt Shell at Overton Park is returning to its historic name and rechristening itself as The Overton Park Shell, part of a move to become a fully self-sustaining entity.
The formal announcement of the change came Thursday morning at an event at the Shell.
The Shell, which was first established in 1936, was revived under the auspices of the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation in 2008, and has continued to be partly funded by the organization.
The decision to rebrand and become self-sustaining was made by the Shell’s board of directors “after months of discussion and discernment."
According to a statement announcing the changes, Shell officials confirmed the venue would “continue its mission of free, performing arts concerts for Memphis and the surrounding communities every year, but will rely specifically on local, Memphis investment from local families, foundations, corporations/businesses and concert-goers with other revenue streams, like more ticketed concerts.”
